I was at that Show, as a young, eager RAF Apprentice, and the Tyne Lincoln was the star. As an advert for emerging turboprop engines, the Tyne in this case, the flypast spoke for itself! It was a lousy day weatherwise...but youthful exuberance kept us alert!...and the plethora of British aircraft had to be seen to be believed; a great time to be in the RAF.

When Britain led the world in aviation,- and airshow commentary too!

Brilliant! Always been interested in proto. engines flying in other airframes. 😊 UK.

Fascinating piece of experimental test-bed footage, thanks. Showing off the latest engine at an airshow, hey, why not? And, of course, the Tyne-powered Vanguard went on to see several decades of reliable service. A fondly-remembered short-to-medium-hauler.

Got to see the one they have at Brooklands start up many years ago, what a sexy engine it is!

@@PeterStaniforth Confession. I'm old enough to have travelled in Vanguards, and it's lovely wee sister, the Viscount. Remember them fondly.

Including the 'Guardsvan'. I remember seeing the Vanguards being crew tested at Hurn and a particular 'screenshot' in my memory of one on finals into Renfrew seen from the top deck of a Glasgow tram Sept 1962. I remember the Napier de-icing Lincoln when one could just wander into and around the hangars at Luton. It had a Lancaster nose fitted and looked rather nice that way.

@@unclenogbad1509 Used to watch the last BMA flight from Heathrow into LBA from my attic window during the early 1980s as a teenager. At 20:37 every evening during the summer I would see a tiny Vickers Viscount way out over the countryside silhouetted against a beautiful sunset. Every now and then they would vector them over Sheffield and I'd get to hear those gorgeous Darts. happy, happy memories.

@@PeterStaniforth Nice memories. We didn't live that close to Heathrow, but under the flight path, so every kid at my primary school could identify every type of plane going over.

I live within sight (and sound) of Hucknall airfield, sadly now a housing estate. I often stare whist fully at all that remains of the runway and think of the history that it witnessed. I am slightly less nostalgic about the outdoor testing of the Trent engine.

Amazing they never fitted a 5 th Merlin in the Lancaster during WW2 though it would have required more fuel I suppose?

Annoyingly the email address I put in gets automatically removed... If you go into the main channel details, select "more" on the description then you should see an email address, or a button to view it.

It's just a test bed for the engine. Back in the day with no computers or simulators easiest way to test them was to fit an extra engine on an existing aircraft.
      This has happened for years.
I believe the B52 had one engine(pair) replaced by the new Rolls Royce replacement engine nacelle for testing purposes.

There were some Boeing B-17 fifth engine testbeds in this period, too.
