My mother-in-law, living in Amritsar at the time was 11 at the time, once told me she remembered being able to see the fire and smoke from across the border. So sad to see people coming over with very little, but cherished possessions. My own mother told me the other day that her father had a couple of motorbikes just incase they had to flee overnight and to get the children to safety. I can't even imagine what that fear would be like living a safe life in the UK.😔
The book is worth reading. It's a pearl.
