Tokyo mirage session has an excellent battle system. I loved the mechanic where the characters not in your main party would jump in with the assist attacks. its one of the few times where it actually felt like the whole party was involved instead of just the 3-4 members that make up your core.

One of my favorite turn-based RPGs for Nintendo Switch is Bravely Default 2; I don't normally pull all-nighters playing games these days but that one warranted it and is one of my favorite games of all time. I don't know if it's considered underrated or whatever but if you haven't played it and you get a chance to, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts in the next video if applicable.
Thanks to this video, I now have some additional titles to look into playing as time permits. Cheers!

That's on my backlog too! I need to figure out the jobs system though

    • @UnionSinger2005
      @UnionSinger2005 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@gab_v250 The job system is pretty straightforward. Each character can equip two jobs: Main and Sub. The main job accumulates JP (job points) used to level up rank and learn new abilities while the sub job does not but can use sub abilities learned thus far. Each character can equip five skills at a time by mixing and matching from job classes for optimum results.
A good strategy is to send boat to explore when console is in rest mode and more often than not, some of the recovered treasure/items will have JP orbs which you can use to feed job classes and quickly raise their rank.
In total, there's 24 job classes and is the best turn-based RPG by SquareEnix I've ever played. Check out some of the review videos and build guides here on YT as well as the discussionss on GameFAQs; you can find some excellent resources to further assist in making an informed decision.

      @TheMaddenGuy1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@UnionSinger2005 I will break it down for you.
Bravely Default 2 literally made the game a grind fest, imagine all that grinding and boredom levelling up in part 2, but at a much more tolerable and efficient timing period. Better jobs as well. Bravely Default felt like a chore and was extremely tedious, Brave 1 is just superior as it takes out all the nuances the second brought and literally plays faster paced and just a better overall experience from story all the way down to walking animations.

For Atelier, I would've put either the Arland games (Rorona, Totori, Meruru, Lulua), Dusk trilogy (Ayesha, Escha & Logy, Shallie) or the mysterious games (Sophie, Sophie 2, Firis, Lydie & Suelle). Reason why is that these others are completely overlooked when compared to Ryza. Ryza is big enough to get her own anime adaptation, which outside of Escha & Logy, no other game has one.
Though i will say it's a shame that there is no physical English copy of the Arland trilogy on switch since Koei Tecmo says the games are not popular yet they keep re-releasing them on newer platforms. Crazy too because they remade Rorona a few years after it came out and even did a demake of it for the 3DS. And Arland was the first sub series in Atelier to get a fourth game.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions has the unfortunate fate where the game itself is decent, but it got A TON of negative controversy in both the original Wii U release and even again on the Switch release. Factor in that Switch got SMT V and the Persona games later that are more widely positively received and it’s not hard to see why TMS just fell out of the wayside.

Also the music was fanatical.
As for TMS, I always tell people just play devil survivor if you want SMT X Fire Emblem and only play it is they are looking for Persona X Fire Emblem. I actually just recently finished Nocturne and played Tokyo Mirage Sessions vanilla on Wii U. I'm still holding out for SMT IV, IVA, and V to be ported to Steam at some point. Now that Etrrian Odyssey is out and (hopefully) financially successful, I hope they'll port (and maybe dub) Persona Q and Q2 as well. I'm patient as I have a huge backlog to clear anyway.
I totally understand that the mobile aspect of the Switch is it's main draw and if you' have an always on the go lifestyle, it's great for that. However, that's just not me. If I'm playing RPG's I want them on my big screen TV, at the highest resolution and frame rate. Excessive loading times just irk me the wrong way. I've always wanted to play Tokyo Mirage but just can't find the time. I don't know if the gameplay is any good but I like the aesthetic and feel of the setting of the game.
Okay, nevermind, the game has excessive pointless censorship. Regardless of how much I actually care about the specifics of the censorship, I can't support all this pointless censorship that the creators are forced to do, it's getting out of hand.

No one talks about TMS because Nintendo did a good job driving away those who would, TWICE.
With the second one basing itself entirely on the censored overseas version, even in Japan.
Really, had they NOT do that, maybe people would've been more willing to give this game a chance.

    Not hating, just a feedback.
I didn't like this video, not because of the choices, but because you barely explain how the games are played and what make them great. It's like you are talking about games that people "don't know about", but you expect your viewers to already know and be familiar with these games. At least for 2 of these, you didn't even bother to show the battle gameplay.
I watch videos like this to discover some games that I missed, or games that I forgot about, but this video doesn't convince me to try any of these games at all, because it feels more like "trust me brother, this is good game, because I like it" and not because you gave me a good reason to get interested in these games.

I've heard about Caligula Effect and, maybe, will give it a chance. TMS has a good battle system but, honestly, the story was extremely meh. For a supposed SMT x FE crossover, it disappointed (not to mention the Switch version is based on the censored version). Atelier Ryza and Triangle Strategy are on my backlog, and I forgot about Monark. As for Etrian... Honestly I kinda lost interest on dungeon crawlers, especially first-person ones after Strange Journey. Hence why I wasn't bothered by BotW and SMTV focusing more on the overworld exploration instead of dungeon crawling.
But these are good recommendations. I'd say the Switch is THE platform for JRPGs at the moment. It only missed Kingdom Hearts because S-E is extremely stupid and lazy.

That's not true. Tokyo Mirage Sessions had controversy back when it released on the Wii U because of it's censorship. When they ported it to the Switch it retained all of the censorship from the Wii U across all versions.

@@slashinghades7347 the switch port is censored in all version
Wii U is uncensored on JPN version ,
Censored gaming made a video about this titled " After Switch Controversy, TMS Is No. 1 Wii U Game On Amazon Japan "
the WII U JPN version outsold the Switch port when news of it being the only uncensored version out, modded WII U's are also able to use a english patch to play the uncensored version ( i am unsure on the text language of the JPN version if it has english or needs a patch )

Tokyo Mirage isn't that amazing imo, especially when you've already played Persona 5. Got half way through it and dropped it recently for a gifted Atelier Ryza part one :). Problem with Ryza is that game is hard to get (physical ofc) and prices are going up quickly. Luckily with that mentioned gift I got my collection complete, even though 2nd one has french backcover (but it was like 30$ so Im more than fine with that). Feels a lot like Blue Reflection but I enjoy it's leisurely pace and characters.

Hi David, first time watching one of your videos. This is my honest, constructive feedback. Please don't take it bad: 1) your camera lacks quality. The first minutes it felt as if I was watching a video from 10 years ago. 2) It would be great of you added time-stamps for each game. 3) The title of your video feels like click-bait because some of the games you mention ARE BEING TALKED ABOUT by many others, namely Triangle Strategy and the Atelier Ryza game. Looking forward to future videos. Greetings.

TMS fail because of censorship from what i know, even the remaster using western version which making this game far from being revived in japan (this game have huge ads), same with ryza fate and their koei tecmo new games, they're slowly dying from what i aware. most online service this company can hold is only 1 year (mobile case) because korea, cn outsource to jp/kr, tw is monopolize anime style games especially online service (not showed in western but in asia many people not really like jp anime games anymore). tokyo xanadu, not many people talk about this in the west but in jp this game does not count as fail, falcom games also rarely talked about but it's not hard either to find fans of their work (i talk about kiseki series).

Lost Sphear first and foremost. It hurts so much to see such a good game get slept on when worse games by far like Octopath Traveler get the recognition. Anyone who tells you it's not a good game hasn't played more than an hour or two. Every person I've encountered said they tried it for a little bit and stopped long before they even got into what the game is about. Or people will claim it's too cliched which I find fine as it all took me right back to what it felt like to play games like Final Fantasy VI and Breath of Fire again for the first time. This was the right kind of cliched.
I Am Setsuna. More of the same...or rather less as this was made before Lost Sphear. Think of it like a Suikoden I and II situation. I am Setsuna is like Suikoden I and is a good start with how everything works. Lost Sphear is like Suikoden II where they take what was good about the previous game then expand upon and streamlines everything.
    Shining Resonance Refrain.
Seven Pirates H. It's better than it has any right to be. Booby training bullshit aside, it's a fun little game that's surprisingly good for what it is. A palate cleanser as it were to play between games with much larger stories like Trails games. It's a Play Asia exclusive though.
World of Final Fantasy Maxima. Do people even remember this? I do, it was good.
Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth collection. This can go right along with the vibe of Tokyo Mirage Sessions.
Fairy Tail. Not bad for a game based on an anime. Could use a larger budget next time though. There was quite a bit left out even for an abridged story and few locales and dungeons.
Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force.
    Dragon Star Varnir.
    God Wars The Complete Legend.
    Langrisser 1 and 2.
