- We set out for a nature retreat, opting for a visit to Cape Point, located within the Cape of Good Hope section of the Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town. Expecting a serene weekday getaway, we were astounded by the bustling crowd of tourists revelling in the natural splendour. Undeterred, we embarked on a leisurely drive, meandering down every winding road, discovering hidden gems amidst the landscape. Along the way, we encountered some of the wildlife, both big and small, and most notably two eland, the world's largest antelope. Ascending to the historic lighthouse atop the point via The Flying Dutchman Funicular, we were greeted by a breathtaking panoramic view, offering insight into the allure that draws countless visitors to this remarkable place. Hi you two! Oh, my beloved country! So astoundingly beautiful, even right to the point where it ends in the ocean. Blue sea and blue skies (most of the time), stunning rock formations, hills and cliffs, animals and birds galore! Beautiful veld flowers, and those trees at Buffelsfontein! Thank you for making this trip so informative and educational you two. You could not have done better, but I know you are going to, you do it every time! Enjoy your time at home. Hi guys Stunning flora and fauna Da Gama was there 1490 mind blowing spotting Elland first for me .loved the light house and the little cottages the gift shop was very expensive I remember that there was a tee shirt with all the different flags of SA. Amazingly a ex french foreign legion guy walked past my house we had a great chat about the cape and the t-shirt he was wearing 👍 the funicular railway was amazing. The beauty of SA never fails to to uplift me thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

Wonderful scenery there at Cape Point! When we went last year we only made it to Cape of Good Hope before the mist became so thick that we couldn't see anything! Hopefully, we can take that funicular next time (a new word to me, despite having a PhD in linguistics)!

Leuk om veel meer te zien van dit natuurgebied dan de vuurtoren, want inderdaad tijdens mijn bustoer was het up & down again en naar de volgende bezienswaardigheid. Als altijd nu ook weer jullie ‘geoefende oog’ qua het spotten van allerlei dieren. Wonderlijk dat ook hier de struisvogels leven en bokkies en (piep) kleine schildpadden. Ik zag daar alleen de baboons met hun kids. Goed dat bij het standbeeld van dat dier nadrukkelijk beschreven staat dat voedsel geven gelijk staat aan hun zekere dood. Verder een prachtige vegetatie en fraaie vergezichten. Als je dan toch schipbreuk leidt (of beter gezegd: lijdt) dan is het in ieder geval op een van de mooiste plekken ter wereld 😊⛵️, hopelijk valt het dezer dagen in Strand mee met de geur in de lucht … in Nederland is het nu groot nieuwe dat Kaapstad vergaat van een geur dankzij een Braziliaans schip in de haven met levende dieren aan boord … die dus helaas waarschijnlijk niet zo lief behandeld worden 😢
With the establishment of the refreshment station at de Caap de Goede Hoop by The IOC there was no cement available for building purposes. The Dutch built lime kilns to burn mussels to form a binding material to be used as cement. The lime kiln was built above ground level, with lime stones which did not crack when it becomes very hot. In the oven you would find a fine grid iron and on it they placed layers of mussel shells and wood.
The heat of the fire turned the shells into a fine ash, which then fell through the grid iron. The ash was then mixed with water and placed in a evaporating enclosure to enable it to turn into a type of lime. It was used as a binding material in place of cement. The Castle in Cape Town and many farm houses in the Sandveld on the West Coast was built with it. Salt was added to the lime and was widely used to white wash the outsides of buildings.

I wanted to ask you about the issue of load shedding. I have a friend who lives in Johannesburg and he often talks about how difficult it is for him because of load shedding. But I have noticed when you were in Cape Town too, there were many things that seemed to run normally with electricity. Like the malls, aquariums... they all need lots of power. So I just wondered how this works. 🤔
Loadshedding has sadly become a part of our daily routine over the last few years, so most large businesses and organisations have been forced to put measures in place to continue their operations during periods of loadshedding. From large generators to solar panels to inverter systems, they all keep the lights on during the dark times. 🤷🏻♂️💡 For individuals to put measures in place at home to keep functionality and productivity up during these times, is a very costly exercise, which adds to the pain and frustration of the entire situation. 💰
@DustBugsTravel Thank you for your reply! Now I understand the situation better. It truly sounds frustrating and costly for individuals, at least it's good that businesses adapted to continue operating in challenging times too. It's a beautiful country with all the unique nature and animals, and it's a shame people have to deal with this problem.

Congratulations on reaching 26K subscribers, this episode was really great...the water looks incredible, the food and beverage prices are crazy...Cape Point is definitely worth a visit though...someone swam across False Bay ...I recall that the "flying dutchman" is often out of service ...it climbs and descents fairly fast...I am glad to see all the tourists though they're driving our prices up.
