Well, but you just don't need tapping epileptic guitars or emo/post-hardcore vibe to be "mathy". They remind me of japanese math bands that have unorthodox ways of being "mathy", but in a refreshing way.
Andre Amabile To me, the term mathy implies odd meters, and this song is just 3 all the way through (to be fair, played out as 6 and 9 at times). But it's all still basically common time. That's all I was saying.
I honestly think math rock is much less about time-signatures and more about the sound/structure/complexity, even if thats within a pretty linear time sig. Complex rythm's founded math rock, it was an easy and distinct way to define and separate it from other shit and thus fuel/progress the genre but it gone done to death and time-signature heavy 'virtuosity' dominated over considered/original songwriting. Nowadays - especially with the almost-full-circle drift back to more math-pop jazzier twinklier softer stuff from whence it was derived (in a 90's midwest-emo sort of respect) - you find a whole heap of great stuff, quite aptly defined as math rock, which mostly just weaves around 3/4 and 4/4. Of course its all very subjective and open to different viewpoints and all that egalitarian-jazz (band name alert!), thats my take on what seems to be happening anyway.
It's not my intention to pull attention away from this great Axes performance, but search youtube for this vid: tricot『爆裂パニエさん』MV . Tricot is a brilliant mostly female Japanese alt rock / math rock band.
That clean tone breakdown/buildup is fucking PERFECT
Having known and been in a band with Stace I can tell you she is awesome.

They're really not that "mathy". But they have the mathrock sound, which is nice :)

yeah not that many women in mathrock, but if you'd like to listen to a mathrock band with female lead vocals, check out Signals from the UK!
