Sometimes a coffee goes a long way, especially here in Italy. Don't feel obliged in any way though, best of all would be to come to Tuscany and have one here with me!

Raff, here is some advice on that kitchen room, though it's probably a bit late at this point. The two main culprits for persistent staining/efflorescence in old buildingsare long standing water/damp intrusion and buildup of sooty material from fires. Fireplaces are particularly bad for this. In both cases the culprit is salts forming and being drawn out of the building material. Further damp draws out even more salts.
In your kitchen you'll have had both water intrusion and obvious soot from it being a smoke house.
In my experience, and according to studies, one of the best remediations for this type of problem is lime plaster with hemp. It's quite good at dealing with salt issues and prevents further extrusions and efflorescence. In addition, hemp plaster provides some insulation value. I've had very good results from laying on a good inch or two of hemp plaster (it's fairly lightweight, and has a consistency of tuna mayonnaise), then finishing it with lime finish plaster. This obviously also provides much better breathability than you'll get from using gypsum or cement based materials.
The Make.Do.Grow channel has done a fair bit of hemp plastering.
Hope that helps.
Camper Vibe are also using lime based plaster for these reasons.
That's about the first useful comment I've seen.
Soot is really dreadful. I fear it’s always going to come through unless your advice is taken. .
Birds get dependent on food sources so when you’re not there, that’s going to be a problem for the birds. And yes, even where there is food supplies around in nature. They become used to finding it
All this time I thought he was using a lime based product. 😮😅
you need to wet the wall beforehand that's why it falling off.
Italy, old house repair and beautiful weather! Love watching your channel.
I wondered where this went. And here it is. I saw the first few videos years ago. Not sure how I got them as I wasn't interested in moving south back then. Maybe it was while I was apparently dying of Covid. I think it crossed my mind a week or two ago, and now I've been served it. Which is a bit creepy, but useful. I can now have a butchers at what he's been up to. I see he's bought my scaffolding. Everyone who has a house should have scaffolding. Especially that aluminium stuff. There's nothing like knowing that you can reach anywhere on or in your house to fix something. Luxury.
And I've done a ton of rendering since the last time I saw this channel. Something very Zen about a good rendering session. Though, if you do too much you eventually lose the use of your rendering arm for a few days, especially if you're going for a smooth surface that won't drop off - multiple layers and lots of stages. There's nothing like arriving back at your house after a trip to pick up some milk and being stunned by your spectacular handiwork :-)
Shoulda coulda mentioned this earlier, like when you started the process of restoration .MOISTURE METER .In my plaster house as been a trusty friend.
I’ve had trouble with staining before where chimney was , and the only thing I could do to correct it was to put plasterboard on. So I took the opportunity to put insulation in between the wall and the plasterboard.
I wish you would put out a 9 or 10 hour loop of the magnificent rain storms you get. The sound of the rain off the tiles is quite soothing.
I use a video of a rain storm on a tin roof to go to sleep. I have used it every night for 5 years and it has over 9 million views.
Your patience and perseverance is amazing. In that heat as well. Keep going
Well done, your patience to keep on with this project, along with the travelling, is admirable. The cheese stall at the market is the one we use for stocking up with Parmesan , for us and the family, for the year.
That birdfeederis so cool. I want one.❤
We have that bird feeder. It might take a couple of weeks for the birds to come😊
As always you forgot tò wet the Wall before start tò apply the plaster, that's why plaster fall down. 😊
I was thinking the same. Too much water makes the soot seepage worse, though. Is a fine line...
@6:40 Summer, here in Ireland.
The most abused Golf ever 🤣
Or utilized HA! VW needs to gift him a car after all of this. Great advertisement. Kitchen man cant wait to see it. Sink by window! Best to you
Can't wait to see the results!
Interesting bit about the bird feeder, but sounds like it's pretty pricey. I'll stick to my "old-fashioned ones" and just watch the birds! Your kitchen will be so cool when you're done! Thanks for the video--a nice surprise for a Friday morning!
Raff. Kitchen is coming together🎉
Lovely cheeses, I’m glad you can fit in some breaks
That bird feeder is great, but at £180 i will stick to my usual 😂
Love your wee house it’s going to look fab, & you’re creating family memories for a lifetime, good on you. 😊
Good morning from Virginia 🇺🇸. It is the Labor Day holiday weekend here.
@@carolwoodward6141 is it Hard Labor or Soft Labor ? Breaking rocks or sewing mailbags 😁
Good day from Fargo, ND USA! Excellent work as usual.
I received one of the feeders at Christmas, and we love it. We also got the hummingbird attachment.
How rewarding to see your roof and guttering withstanding the torrential rain. Well done you. Your car is like your good self, comes through adversity regardless. Great video.
I am surprised you do not seem to pre spray the wall before plastering. A damp wall improves adhesion and using a PVA glue watered down also improves adhesions.
Your house is looking great. The view is so beautiful in any weather. You need someone on the ground to fill the bucket
Good morning in Florida been hard raining here.
I am in New York and my son bought that bird feeder for me for Christmas last year! This kitchen is going to be beautiful!
Hey Raff, if you use a spray bottle and dampen the area you're plastering, and let it soak in, it might help with adhesion?
It depends on the material used. Some plasters need very high suction to form a bond, so water can be counterproductive. This is the case with hardwall browning coat. Others need low suction, so water, or even PVA or some other barrier, is needed. Lime needs a thorough wetting down a good hour before plastering.
@@ptolemyauletesxii8642 sounds like you know a lot more about it than me, which is why I said " might " help. I was assuming the old mortar was lime which is why I thought it might help. I do tend to use a PVA " lost coat " for pretty much everything I do, but I'm only a DIYer, not a professional. I defer to your superior wisdom sir 👍
@@ianbaxter362 It's almost certainly lime mortar, although it's equally certain that someone will have 'repaired' some of it at some point with cement based mortar. Raff has also sealed the stone with an acrylic based sealer, in an attempt to block the staining from the sooty salts, which will diminish the breathability of the lime mortar, but will also decrease the suction.
@@ianbaxter362 I work as a plasterer in the UK. I'm not overly familiar with materials and common building practices in Italy but I do know that they use things like Malta Antica, a lime mortar, fairly commonly, at least in older buildings. In the UK 99% of builders have no idea how to deal with older properties and just throw Portland cement and gypsum plaster over everything.
wow that wall is looking soooo good. gonna be so pretty soon!
i wish your videos would be at least 40 min. long. I find listening to you interesting and relaxing. Also the products you advertise are interesting and I like finding out about what they do.
Yum yum the grill looks good. Great bird feeder. I am going to look into it. And the kitchen! Cant wait to see it thru completion. Xo
Good afternoon, i like the. Birdfy. Your plastering is really good..
👍👏🌟🍀💐
Good morning from Texas, USA.
Hello Texas. I was born in Comanche.
Looking good . Love your videos.
❤
Those camera bird feeders are so fun and your has the perfect view, anytime you will be able to catch a glimpse of your beautiful view in Italy!
Very cool bird feeder! The old w/c wall looks very nice with some herbs growing. The kitchen looks overwhelming to me; I'm glad you are so highly motivated to complete this strenuous work in very hot conditions. The deli looked fantastic.🍺
That bird feeder is amazing, love the idea of the camera identifying the species.
I want one 😂
Thank you for sharing and loving the Birdfy bird feeder. Your house looks amazing! Enjoy the feeder and the joy of birdwatching😊🐦
Looking excellent
Excellent, practice makes perfect 🎉🎉🎉
Nice touch the bird feeder👍🤗
Keep up the good work but don't forget to have some fun 🤗👍
Love Sue❤❤❤🇬🇧❤❤❤
Im exhausted just watching you
Have you considered getting help to finish sooner?
Are you considering repointing some of the stone work? It is quite lovely
Can you publish the bird camera manufacturer or if in Canada we could watch our birds?
I love that bird feeder - what a brilliant idea! Great work you're doing on your lovely Italian home - such a hardworking man you are. I need to have a little kip now, after watching all your fabulous efforts! 😴😴
Those walls look like they should be repointed first and then plaster. Is that lyme plaster? Not cement that wont let stones breath. Also wetting surface first helps plaster stick
Cool, Birdfy in Tuscany! I love mine, and it was fun to see it on your very enjoyable vlog. If the birdseed shells/husks become a problem, try shelled sunflower seeds. They're more expensive but not so messy under the feeder, and the songbirds love them. It's not the easiest feeder to clean, but if you can put it under some sort of overhang (or rig some sort of shelter), the rain won't make the seed so soggy. The identification feature is getting better but has been known to identify wives as flamingoes😝
Love your birdfeeder. Great progress
I've noticed you do a lot yourself what planning permissions have you sort as I want to do the roof myself also but geometras are saying no must be done by professional?
Wicked storm loved this video
Is someone paying you to promote their “art work?” 😂😂😂
His wife is quite the artist.
@@sadjaxx Quite.
Looking great!

Great job.
Well done

Scaffolding is awesome!
Think you may need to move bird feeder solar panel from under perch Ralf 😂😂, birds being birds. You definitely are a glutton for Plaster punishment Ralf 😁, have a great weekend with family Ralf 👌🏻
You're the big teddy bear of home renovation. That poor VW always getting soaked. 😟
