Been looking for a video like this after getting back into Pokémon comp after nearly a decade away from it. Really appreciative of how you made the information easily digestible and even showcased the process as well as listing what to prioritize so people like me won't get overwhelmed when doing it later. No words can capture the amount of thanks others must have to finally have a guide like this
Your last two videos have been GREAT. This is one of, if not THE, fundamental skill of becoming a good vgc player. Keep up the great work, your a real asset to the community and I hope as VGC grows your channel grows along with it
Jesus Christ this this is what was needed!! Videos on this don’t exist!! This part 2 this is GOLD. I’ve continued to learn so much all while taking out guess work.
Back in the day I built a Goodra with "odd" EV spread to attack/resist certain things and some people laughed because it wasn't the 252/4 and almost convinced me to change it but when I used the calculator, it was just weaker than the way I did :p
Thanks for watching, all! What did you think of our template for creating an optimal EV spread? Did you like our examples? Let us know in the comments!
I know you’ve done these types of videos before because it’s what pulled me into your channel and don’t stop doing them. They’re always helpful and I know it has really helped improve my team building and play. These videos are always good for either new or experienced vgc players!
The 252/252/4 spread remains popular even in competitive play. Wolfe Glick has repeatedly mentioned this in his tournament analysis videos. He favors bulky Pokémon, even among offensive threats, enabling them to withstand hits they would typically not survive. To craft counter-meta teams, he might allocate just a single point or a few points into speed for Blood Moon Ursaluna, allowing it to outpace and counteract another meta threat.
Exactly what we said. He identified a speed tier that he wanted, put points into that, and after that, dump the rest into damage and whatever is left into your bulk.
Ngl, im genuinely glad this video popped up in my feed, I was building a team with arch/dnite yesterday and apparently my brain went stupid mode cuz i was thinking i needed 112 on both to out speed after tail wind and hit 214 but that would be 224 lol so tyvm for making this :D
Hey man, I have always wondered how people decide how much EVs go into what stat (i’m not a competitive player, i just like to shiny hunt LOL). And this is making me want to get into competitive aspect of the game! Thanks man
Step #1 i my favorite "pick a speed tier". And im like HARD TRICK ROOM! 🤣 Not having to invest EVs in speed is fine by me😉 Great vid boss you even mentioned the hp end in 9 for maximum life orb efficiency 🤙
It's the opposite of grassy terrain/leftovers! You want to undercut the hp value by 1 to make it round down. So instead of 176, 192, 208, 224, etc, you want 175, 191, 207, 223! When you divide them by 16 (sand chip is 1/16th your hp), you'll end with a decimal like 10.9375 which rounds down to 10. Hope this helps!
Absolutely amazing walkthrough! However. How would you go about it if you have no idea what is a thread and what to outspeed? I would not have thought of dragapult as a speed tier to outspeed for archakudon but just seemed it impossible from the start. Also had no idea primarina runs haze and then use the support move as base for speed tier, as well as damage calc for knock off ttar. I often find myself stating that when my mons get ohkoed then they just won’t do into the opposite mons. So how would you approach this as a new player who still doesn’t know what all the 1000+ mons can do or is used for?
Study the tournament results. Go on the limitless website and always stay up to date and see what is being played. You can also look at usage data from pikalytics website. But always study the tournament results or simply play in them!
In pokemon, knowledge is power. Most people waste EVs in speed and sometimes even their attacking stats. Then again, if you don't know the meta, maximum EVs could be a great starting point to see what threats to Calc for.
Yup! You can start 252 252 4 if you really don't know and adjust as you play more but with a little research from tours from the resources I show in every video you can save time and do some quick EVs as an easy starting point with this template
Not to be "that guy" but, I've found a lot of success with 252/252 4 builds both on ladder and vs friends/other streamers. I always go 252 speed in a given speed tier to account for if my opponent is ALSO running tailwind with their Dragapult, for example...mine will outspeed it and get the KO if they don't tera. Not only that, but I imagine points in defense are wasted if my opponents team is mostly special attackers, and I could put the rest of those points into Attack so that whatever move I'm going for will be felt, and then there's the chance my opponent gets a game-winning critical hit, again making defense investment obsolete, or I end up paralyzed/slept by amoonguss for three turns in a row. This is just what I've observed from the L's I've taken recently.
A very informative video. I do struggle sometimes. What are your thoughts on dragon cheer Scopelens archetype? Do you think it's gimmicky or is it somewhat consistent?
If only Pokémon added in a slider system for ev spreads instead of items or farming wild Pokémon and change the way you reset evs if you want to respec. It’s just such a crap system.
Am I wasting my time making all my EV/IV spreads on battle stadium with level 100 EV's?! I've always done that. 😅 I just re adjusted some mons have HP divisible by 16 like u taught me (for leftover and terrain) but I made them with level 100 stats.
Usually it's the common meta threats - particularly something you're weak to. For primarina I chose to calc against rillaboom because it's weak against grass and it's a common meta threat. For Archaludon I did the same thing against blood moon. Dragonite I did dragapult because it's the fastest dragon that's meta relevant
You can still optimize your bulk and damaging stat, just not for speed! Like Ursaluna you can optimize the HP for burn chip from flame orb and survive rillaboom attacks with intimidate support from Incineroar
I'm a big fan of 212/0/12/44/164/76 Archaludon. Outspeeds max speed Ursaluna, still gets that little extra stat bump in special attack while also getting that even number to maximize on electro shot boosts. 192 HP for grassy terrain recovery. Spdef gives it favorable roles on stuff like Ursaluna earth power.

There is always some merit in 252 252 spreads but remember in a tournament setting, it's a different ball game. Information is key!

a common popular threat in the meta that it is weak to
those rare cases where 252 is acceptable......like 252 atk on iron hands for example
lol not sure who is approving of this comment it was supposed to be a little bait for clover

Usually it's the common meta threats - particularly something you're weak to. For primarina I chose to calc against rillaboom because it's weak against grass and it's a common meta threat.
