Just past weekend I seen Caitlin up here in Farmington New Mexico at the Four Corners 4×4 rock crawl. Did not recognize her till I saw her pink Converse shoes. She got 2nd place and I saw one of the best recovery she did. Coming face down she almost flipped over but saved it and I caught it on my phone
3:54 - I am always amazed at sand and kinetic physics: where most 4x4 vehicles can’t even move themselves, and MORR rigs can traverse themselves AND pull something 3-times their weight. Never ceases to amaze. 😮
With the Nissan's, usually that "nautical eye hook" is typically in the trunk with the jack. But from the factory I've also seen them come off the truck and they're in the glovebox, or even under the front seats, instead of where it's supposed to be in the trunk. It'll just be laying there. For any Nissan owners who may need this hook some day or anyone who's car has a spot for the hook, find it. Know where it is. If its missing, buy one from the dealership or order the proper one for your vehicle. You never know when you'll need it

Ed: The one that's got the most fuel! LOL. Exactly! That truck would be in the 9k-10k range, so a pretty good pull in soft sand. 10k truck on 235 rubber in soft sand, now there's a great idea. The ol Morrvair did great though! Thanks for the video.
I wonder if somewhere out there is a kit with the "nautical eye of towing" for the different models of cars that have them. Would be a good kit to have in each of the recovery vehicles.
@@elkippy ACTSHUALLY it makes sense to make a different one for each car: cost (small hooks for small cars, big hooks for big cars), bumper shape and depth (length of hook), country of origin vs imperial, different use cases (towing light car on flat vs heavy in offroad). Tell me more how you would make it one tow hook that would fit all of these use cases and still be cost optimized so that light city cars don't end up with overpriced for them pickup sized tow hooks?
@@darekmistrz4364the idea isn't to have one standard sized hook, it's to have a standard thread. Even if there were 2 sizes. Small and big. That'd do. You could make a universal hook kit then with some threaded rod and some nesting pipes You know M8 and M12 or something like that. Then you only have 2 product lines not 47 and Aktually that would save you a pile of money over the savings in steel between a perfect sized unit.

I assisted a tow truck a couple weekends ago pick up a beamer. The driver grabbed a whole handful of nautical eyes out of his truck. He had 5 or 6, and one of them fit. Having a universal would be awesome, but there's not that many different ones, and they would all fit in a small tote or roll up tool carrier. Maybe Matt's worried about legal aspects by carrying/using his own?
No…… they actually work surprisingly well in snow, until it gets so deep your dragging frame because they cut through the snow to find better traction underneath. But sand with no bottom awful.
I'm hoping I can put 1 on my bike. Had to remove the old 1 when I put a larger fuel tank on. Wearing a 'camel pack' filled with ice, and a bit of water is cooling on hot days though.Can't wear 1 in a car though ;)
Ya we got a 23 non duelly and it was above 100, Denali hd tho..... Tried pulling our 35 ft trailer and trans broke. It's sitting in the shop now. We are around number 3000 on the replacement list. GM can't give us a time frame on when our 100 000 dollar truck will be useable again. My family has been gm supporters my entire almost 40 year life. Needless to say we are unhappy with gm

Sometimes I really wonder what those people are thinking, driving that kind of cars through the sand like that. Having all-wheel-drive is one thing but you still need the power.

I have to tell you you have helped me and my bus driver drive the special meet the bus because I heard you say passenger side driver side to help return because she can’t see me to park that bus. It works amazingly well cause I’m in the back she’s in the front so she can’t see me point thank you so much for that information. It was a lifesaver, and we do the special needs. Love those kids.
Hey - Im an aussie and very amused about the people you have to rescue?? In Aus I guess we try to help out our fellow 4Wd'rs and if its a simple snatch or maybe a straight forward winch we just do it ? Some of the people you help look like newbys ?? have they even dropped their tyre pressures or thought to check they are actually in 4WD ?? The crazy advanced rescues with the wrecker are off the scale - just brilliant !!
The banana is a great and capable vehicle, but I like when you use the Morrvair. It is also capable, but additionally is one of the coolest, most awesome offroad vehicles ever made. BTW, we had a Corvair as a family car when i was young. It was replaced by a 1965 Rambler 990 wagon when my little sister was born in '69. That Rambler would also make a cool offroad vehicle IMHO.
So, Y'all are in Hurricane Utah and we're here in Hurricane Francine, South Louisiana. Jim Cantori is in town, so you just know we're fixing to have a bad day! Looks like she'll be coming in around Cote Blanche (White Cliffs) Bay, so we're on the "good side" of the storm. What that means is, because hurricanes usually rotate counter clockwise, the area to the left of the "eye" has less tidal surge because the winds are coming out of the East and then the North as the eye passes us by. We'll probably only see 50-70 mph winds, but the rains could be pretty bad. BTW, if you should wake up some morning and Jim Cantori is setting up a camera in your front yard, just go ahead and load the wife and kids up in the Ole Morrvair and head outta town as fast as you can! Oh, and head over to the Maverick Station and buy all the bread and water they have for some reason. Jim Cantori just has that effect on people!
We had a winter storm come through a few years ago and we assumed it would be the usual dusting of snow and 💩ton of ice. Then we heard Jim Cantori was coming. To quote Jimmy Buffett, "You don't have to worry until Jim Contori shows up"
Hey Matt - why not fab a few eyelets/bolts in common size threads and keep in the recovery rigs? Then you can pop one in for those vehicles with recovery points but lost eyelets. May be inexpensive solution to a problem you encounter often.
Hi all, love peanut getting up to look at the Harley going past at 5.25 in.. Memories or its past perhaps. I retired 21 years ago to great coastal beaches, but we are not allowed to drive or ride on them In my LANDROVER. LOL (Its a British thing)
You've never talked about money. I'd be interested to hear some ballpark numbers how much you bill for your services and how it is affected by the location of the customer and other variables like hardness of the job and equpment (mainly vehicles) used.
Lol "The reason they're missing" is because the Dealers steal them. They hold them hostage and make you pay for them even though they come WITH the vehicle. IDK how many times I've been with people when they go to buy a new car, where the dealer had removed the Tow Eye thing from the car, and then when asked about it, tried to sell it back to the person... If ya run into this with a dealer, make sure you call your BMV/DMV, its actually illegal as it is a part of the vehicle's recovery package that is mandated by law to be included with every car... Once enough reports are made, the State can go to the dealer and force them to mail every person that had purchased a vehicle there their Tow Eye thing free of charge to the individual, and also fine the dealership a hefty amount for breaking the law. Dealerships have to follow a semi-strict set of laws and regulations, but they can only be held accountable to them by the BMV/DMV in your city once a certain amount of reports are filed. (this is to stop people from just making up claims cause they had a bad experience or something).
On boat recoveries, take your cue from Paul and only rescue boats that have been on dry land long enough for the quagga to die off. That way you don't have to worry about water. If you know what you're getting into, you can take the ride you need but pics can be deceiving so you sometimes have to make what ya took work.
Two things: I really appreciate that Matt does not have some obnoxious light bar. Some you tubers have enough warning/flashing lights to kill an epileptic, and they are in the middle of nowhere, where "no one else was able to get to" so there is absolutely no one else around. Also, Matt should get some tow eyes and put them in the truck. I can't imagine there are more than 1/2 dozen or so. Awesome as always.

The Morrvair to the rescue and we were pretty sure it gets used more than the Banana and we were right. I don't know if its the weight difference or what but the Morrvair is more capable in these recovery's. Good video and nice to see Ed and Rhett!
You should make a selection of big eye bolts to have with you for those vehicles that have the provision. I'd imagine there are only a few different thread sizes.
I suspect the issue with the Nissan was not so much lack of power but the CVTs they like to use. Nissan’s CVT just are not great for off-road and struggle to put down the power.
I think it’s hilarious that u have to go out of your way to explain to some why u do certain things 😂 Just be happy that someone on TH-cam has some pleasant videos to watch

I haven't been in a sandy area in decades. I completely forgot what I hated the most about sand when Ed said "we won't get sand blasted".

That 3500 made it farther than I ever would have guessed. I've buried one of those things on a dry lawn before.
