slayer gameplay (2-handed sword): valheim ashlands

  • along with dual axes, this is the "all gas, no brakes" weapon in ashlands. it is identical to the krom sword from mistlands in its moveset and overall use.
basically, you have 2 options with this weapon: parry, or secondary opener. if you can parry-stagger it, or if you can dry-stagger it with a secondary opener, it is pleasant to use. if you cant, then it is very unpleasant. so, like dual axes, this is a front runner that dunks on trash mobs but cant turn the tide against stars and chaotic mixed groups.
given how many sword options there are in the ashlands, this weapon feels pretty pointless, as it did in mistlands. a nighogg and shield, or mistwalker and shield, is much more versatile and competent against tougher enemies. this is basically an "im bored" weapon to try something else and challenge yourself. it doesnt solve any problems that cant be solved with other weapons, and it cannot solve for situations where a shield is required for heavy parrying.
the model of the sword is also obnoxiously wide and glowing, which literally interferes with your vision sometimes, due to how it is carried across your shoulder when idle. i feel like whoever does the combat and whoever does the modeling/graphics need to talk. cant be the same person. the visual effects of the weapons in this game are all overdone and distracting.
something that occurred to me in reviewing some of these weapon-specific gameplays is that you can probably get off a big jumping secondary against a parry-staggered valkyrie if you have feather cape to extend your jump a bit. that would definitely improve the kill speed of basically all weapons that have a big secondary attack against valkyrie. but valkyries cant be starred and arent particularly dangerous. in fact, they are good at dealing friendly fire to other mobs and should be your last target on a mixed battlefield.

The way I played with this weapon increased my survivability more than any other weapon in ashlands. Opening with power attacks at high swords level basically always staggered. 2 star warriors would never dream of hitting me with the distance creation. Stamina management was a breeze making movement and dodging effectively unlimited. The root enchantment made groups easy to divide and conquer. The downside is that basically every attack is secondary. The primary attacks only use is quick cleanup on a failed secondary attack kill. This leads to a "slow but sure" playstyle that feels fun but may not be everyone's cup of tea. You have to really embrace the immersion of being a slow lumbering viking with a big stupid sword to realize its full potential.

Did you find the root proced enough to be useful. I know its the underdog, but Im REALLY thinking of going the blood enchantment; mostly for what you just said, the extra bit of damage for the stagger.

They really need these kinds of weapon options in the early game. You shouldn't need to hit the mistlands before being able to forge a two handed sword.

im thinking about a "blood" build with 3 health foods using the big secondary on this weapon, but otherwise, i am not sure it that it really does any jobs well.
i do like when the ash cape converts into an "ash apron," though.

I havent played the testbranch but whats the new lingering health potion? Is it more like the lingering stamina but with health? In that case could it be a thing in a blood build, to run around with low to half health and slowly regen health with lingering health potion? Cuz I think I find it hard to fully optimize the new blood mechanic. I mean you do more damage when low but you dont want to fill your health too much with a normal health pot so instead you have the lingering health slowly refill your bar? Om just theorycrafting here 😅

@@percollen46 i think lingering health is like stamina, +25% for 5 minutes.
i have heard people say the best way to use blood is to chip your health and then use magic bubble to ride around with low health. but then your total health is lower because you are eating eitr food.

Greatswords are my favorite weapon in the game. That being said my play style is quite different from yours. I use mage armor, feather cape, 2 eitr foods and a stamina food. With level 79 swords, I use it as a delete button. Marksman, twitchers and seekers get insta killed by the poke, while warriors and asks are brought within an inch of their life and stagger. All that being said though, the new gem system really does not work well for them at all really. Blood is alright but there’s no way in hell I’m running a blood set when my max hp is 116. Even with 3 health foods though, it’s still too inconsistent for me to call it good, since it’s hard to reliably get your health low and it’s hard to reliably keep it low since your health passively regenerates. The problem with nature and storm gems for the great sword though, is that since it has a slow attack speed, it can’t get procs as consistently as faster weapons can. I feel like a change to how gems affect the great sword like say, switching the proc chance out for more elemental damage or a higher proc chance, would make it feel good to use. Because as it stands right now, there’s almost no reason to use anything but the storm enchantment for that ever so slight increase in damage, as other weapons do the procs far better. If you want more dps and the proc over high burst damage, than a nidhogg is the way to go.

I personally think you underrate the 2handed swords a little. As you say, they struggle when fighting starred enemies, and I've found them not to be very effective when fighting morgans, atleast when comapared to other weapons, but I find their ability to quickly deal with weaker enemies, and especially unstarred asks to be impressive. Theyre a useful option to weeding out weaker enemies so you can take on the stronger starred enemies with another weapon. Also I found you could reliably kill valkyries with the secondary attack without needing to have the feather cape equipped, just by jumping and immediately performing the secondary attack. They're also quite good at fighting bosses, as bosses tend to have long windups between their attacks, so you can get a full chain in and deal pretty hefty damage.
