  • This video shows the McCormick Deering International Harvester (IH) ground-powered grain binder in action. We are running the grain binder (sometimes called a reaper, or binder-reaper) through our field of barley. The grain binder was manufactured in the 1920s and was originally pulled by a team of three or four horses. In this video we are pulling the binder with a 1943 John Deere A. The grain binder is powered by a large wheel that is in contact with the ground--as the binder is pulled by the tractor the mechanisms of the binder are moved through gears, chains and levers.

I'm no expert but that barley looks like it could wait a week or two yet, pretty green. What's the rush?

Good question...the green you see are weeds (some sort of grass) that have grown up along with the barley. The barley was ready to be cut, but the weeds were still growing strong. Once cut we let the bundles dry for a week so that the green weeds have a chance to dry. Then we throw the bundles onto the wagon without fear of the weeds rotting. Thanks for watching!
