Fly Fishing Small Streams for Wild Brown Trout - River Lowman, Devon

  • I love fly fishing the small urban River Lowman. It is just a few minutes walk from my house, running into the centre of Tiverton. It is an urban river that backs on to an industrial estate and very few anglers fish it.
There was too much water and colour to enjoy fishing the River Exe after a spell of rain so I took to the small River Lowman to get my fly fishing fix for the wild brown trout.

The river I fished over 60 years ago - just a short walk from home. We called it the Hams. Saw my first mink in Paradise woods back in the early sixties making short work of an eel.

Very good again , it show you don't have to spend loads of money on tackle to get the same results. Keep them coming mate .

Thanks ascot 104. I’ve got a couple of videos I’m editing but I went to Dartmoor yesterday and I’m keen to get that uploaded ASAP

Delightful. Yes, please make more clips. That's a lovely little stream, and I like your style of fly fishing-not overloaded with insane amounts of gear, quiet and working the water carefully. Best wishes. :-)

Thanks for watching and for the sub 👍. I love fishing with minimal gear, it’s the same style I use with all my fishing. Makes it cheaper too 😀

@@WestCountryAngler Yes indeed. I love simplicity. I'm stunned at some of the gear carried in massive vests by some anglers I see olin You Tube. Fortunately te few Ilve met in my adventures have been more modest. :-) I don't even have waders.

I have thought of wet wading but I’m too soft with the temperatures of my rivers!

I only do minima; wading-just snorts and boots, and only ever to my shins. The streams here are mostly stone bottoms with muddy pools at times. I never go into quiet pools-that's mayhem. :-)

I’m new to fly fishing so this video was refreshing as you didn’t have loads of kit that some other videos lead you to believe you need.
I have a question though, how deep would you say the water was that you were fishing? Also, do you think trout can be found in most small steams around the UK?

Hi Mike. Thanks for watching. You really don’t need loads of kit, the minimum would be rod, line, flys and a net. I’m a great believer in carrying as little as possible so I can fish without feeling I’m carry a dead weight.
That stream varied in depths, most is just a foot deep but then there are pools that can be 3-5 feet. I can only speak about south west rivers but there are trout in most spate or rain fed rivers that have a decent pace for high oxygen levels. If you find a similar stream then the best way is to watch early evening and see if you spot any rising fish. Good luck 👍

I have an Agility Rise 7'6" 4 weight for using on the overgrown upper Wye, it's a sheer pleasure to fish with.

Hi. Thanks for that. I was tempted as I do like my agility II 10”. I’ll definitely look at that rod 👍

The controlling association or fishing club will let you know if a river that you want to fish is open

Have you found out about the ticket for the river or is it free? It looks a lovely little river and I only live down the road. I got the same rod as well, really nice rod. Keep the videos coming 👍🏼🎣
