I am reading Thinking in Bets by Annie Duke and she talks about how in poker and in life, there is skill and there is luck. Skill is what you have influence over and luck is what you don't have influence over. She points out that most people will credit their skill for good things that happen to them and blame luck for bad things that happen. It is important to be more objective than that and understand that we can control some things, but luck plays a big role.
