That plaintive "Mommy" always gets me no matter how many times I've seen this.

I was in my forties when I lost my mom and I still got fixated on the idea that no one would be able to take care of me anymore. It's just something about losing a caretaker parent--there's a terrible helplessness on top of the normal grief.
Also, Angel showing up and Buffy reaching back for his hand, instinctively knowing he's already reaching for her, is the most poignant moment of comfort in this episode for me. Beyond the whole Bangel feels, and as much as Dawn and Buffy collapsing together is affecting, it's Angel coming out of nowhere that shocked me with its compassion in a way I didn't see coming.

Decades later and that line, "Who's going to take care of us?" always brings tears to my eyes. Sarah sells it so hard and Michelle brings it home with Dawn realizing Buffy is there for her and together, the rest of that scene breaks me. Doesn't matter how many times I've seen it, I can't help but cry.

Buffy saying, "Mommy," at the end of this episode gets me more than her saying it at the end of _I Was Made to Love You_ and the beginning of _The Body._

This is such a great follow up to the Body. The acting is just off the charts.

Only after this episode I realized how good it is that we have Dawn in this season. Imagine Buffy losing her mom and ending up all alone in this world... Yes, Dawn is not her real sister, but she's her family and she feels like family. It's important to have someone you can share your pain with after a terrible event like this.

I remember the hairs sticking up on the back of my neck when Joyce’s silhouette passed the window accompanied by a sense of dread. It would have been too much for them to show us zombie Joyce, but they really pushed it to the last second!
The final scene is so well acted, so devastating yet cathartic at the same time to see the sisters share their grief and seek solace in each other.
Sometimes it’s good to pause to reflect that we started with praying mantis teachers, a principal getting eaten by students and a ventriloquist dummy, in order to truly appreciate the progression of this show and its characters.

Music-wise I'm now wonderinh why, Doc, when searching for the right book, hums the theme from Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf".

This is a super nearly perfect follow up to The Body. It is agreed that The Body is exceptional and one of the best episodes of all television. To have almost no drop off with this story shows what a remarkable show BTVS is consistently.
Your reaction was spot on and how you and most people feel. Joyce needed to stay dead, Dawn needed to see and understand Buffy’s grief, and life needs to move forward.
Because of the great ending and sad start( everyone melts when Angel arrives) we often overlook Willow. Tara ha a lifetime of experience and knows the power of witches. This is a reckless side of Willows character that defies Tara and wants to raise Joyce. It appears that Willow is not wanted to resurrect Joyce for love or concern but rather to see if she can and does she have the power to go against natural order.

To echo a comment above, it's a solid ep. The Body was always going to be tough to follow, and I think this did well. That 'Mommy' from Buffy is gutting.

I liked it. ´Solid´ is a good way to describe it. I rated it higher just for the creepiness/horror factor. It was a pretty good episode even without that, IMO. Glad you're enjoying the reactions, plenty more to come! 🙂

@@loftus4453 Haha, I might get to it eventually. I'm focussing on finishing Buffy first and then I'll see where I'm at and if I can commit to a brand new show. If I eventually decide not to continue with the channel, I've actually filmed reactions to the first 4 episodes, so I might put those up if nothing else. I really enjoyed those 4 episodes, and In a perfect world, one where I have the time, I'd 100% do it. We'll see.

THAT demon is played by Joel Grey. If you’ve watched Cabaret, he plays the equally creepy (but actually ‘good’ and worldly) Kit Kat Club MC. If you haven’t watched Cabaret… tsk

I've never seen it. He's a pretty good character in this; he's appeared in two more episodes since this one. The last time I saw him may have been it, though. 😲

Grey won a Tony for Cabaret; that they got a performer of his caliber for Buffy amazes me a bit. And I think you can tell; his acting feels more natural to me than that of most guests (and one or two of the regulars).

After the fallout from Joyce's death you can feel the pain of Dawn in Forever where she just can't accept her mother's death, and would do anything to being her back. This of course is a very basic human emotion experienced by many. You can see how Tara is annoyed with Willow for lending some assistance. Tara become very wary of Willow's increasing power, a perception here of the Willow/Tara power shift, and the tensions increasing with them. Another good point raised is the anxiety and pressure of having to deal with arranging funeral, wake, catering, etc even the admin involved after death in having to contact banks, pension companies, solicitors, etc etc etc it is really draining. Some terrific scenes with Dawn and Buffy at the end you can almost feel the anguish for the two of them. Brilliantly acted, again how this show did not receive awards is crazy, it should definitely be retrospectively recognised and awarded at the Emmys in the future for its contribution to TV drama. We know this show can be very light hearted with great comedy moments, but when it hits hard it really hits. This is what makes the Buffyverse shows so brilliant they cover every type of human emotion so well. On reflection I think you will watch all the episodes again and will appreciate them even more.

Willow looked super sketchy here, and she has messed with dangerous magic herself, but I’m sure she didn’t mean Dawn to try anything so dangerous with zero experience at all. I’m not sure whether the writers wanted us to think in that direction or not. IMO it was not a useful red herring.

The Angel episode? Yes, I think so. It didn't matter so much since the next Angel episode wasn't one I was due to film a reaction to. During that Angel reaction outro, I'd also kinda guessed that he hadn't lost his soul. Nothing really spoiled, thankfully.
