I think nobody expected this, there has been so much talk about some other Behringer synthies, but this one seemed to be underrated. Starsky Carr correcting this :-)
Another great video. I enjoy watching all your videos. This has made me buy a Cat. I had a Kitten about 20 years ago bit this is a million times better
Your vids on the CAT have really been helpful. Out of the box I couldn’t get it to work for about ten minutes! 😂 It’s a bit mind boggling, and I’m surprised how meaty and dirty it can sound, sometimes it’s almost granually. Anyways, have a beer on me, and thanks.
In the 70s, ARP Instruments tried taking Octave Electronics to court for (supposedly) plagiarizing the Odyssey design to build the Cat. Could you do a comparison video between the Behringer versions of the two models?
I had thought about this, but it pretty much falls apart as soon as you look at the VCOs! There are some similarities - you have a choice of S&H inputs, loopable ADSR, and FM. But the CAT can’t loop The AR envelope, can simultaneously play each waveform, has subs, can modulate VCO1 with VCO2 AND VCO2 with VCO1 - so some similarities but .... maybe I’ll do a short one showing how they’re different!!
Arp Odyssey have a more complex modulations. But fewer option on vco mixing. Arps have extensive s+h module. More complex hardsync vco option. I dont really see the option what type of VCO hardsync with what? Mode A, Mode B? Usually Cat have steeper 24db Lowpass filter, Arps usually 12db or\and 24db + highass filter. Cat is like a bit cutted down Arp and Pro One together. Good all rounder. Arps have more possibilities, it have more palette, more robust workhorse, but with harder user interface.
Auto repeat of the envelope is such a useful feature that not enough synths have. I used it a lot on my Clef B30 Microsynth from really slow ostinato up to almost audio frequency.
I wish the sliders were longer or they used dial knobs instead. Especially around the zero position the sliders react extremely sensitive. It's extremely hard to find the sweet spot you're looking for. So much happens around the zero position of the attack for example. At least, the sliders should work non linear to compensate for the short travel. Then again, I got the thing for 200€ new. It's hard to argue against that. Still, I would have paid more to get encoders that allow more precise control over the parameters.
This ir the WASP... but that's probably because I have originals of the others! But I do like the Odyssey with full keys as well... in fact I'd go for the Odyssey... how fickle am I changing my mind mid sentence?? :)
How would you discibe this one? What is the most different about this one compared to other similar monosynths? I dig it's design but not sure if it is for me
I got this synth when it dropped a few weeks ago. Very wide range of sounds that it can do and it’s very good at loud aggressive sounds. The tuning on my vco 1 knob is a little glitchy but nothing that’s made me wanna send the synth back. I’m happy with my purchase.
@@StarskyCarr check the start of your video all the way up until 4min mark, there is this noise, i think its from the USB or something? I checked another guys sound demo "dymtn" on youtube, he had the exact same sound in his video as well. its like a 10khz ring or some sht.
i went for the CAT personally.. with the ability to mix waveforms it is so much more versatile and modern sounding, also great for creating weird sound effects. at the end of the day if you are after that fat retro tone it is there for you as well
Peter, It depends how hooked on the Moog sound you are. I'm not a fan so I'd personally get the Cat (if I wasn't holding out for the 2600). However, Lisa Bella Donna makes the Moog sound amazing.
I love using VCO1 as a basic sequencer, and can sit for hours (and I did!). I'm not so keen on the S&H as it's a bit rough, but watch out for my upcoming comparison with an original!
@@StarskyCarr yes man!!!! Very happy some lovely person gave you an original to pin it against. Unless you went and bought one ;). Very excited. Your comparisons are always of the Charts.
Jim Heywood from Sonic State has one. So we’ve made one by sending clips back and forth a U.K./US collab 😀his is a different revision, but still a fun review to do.
I never noticed as recorded at low level... but I'd use the low output into a guitar pedal and turned the VCA down to reduce the possibility of distortion. It sounds like USB noise, which can sometime creep in on any USB connected synth.
@@StarskyCarr a Motu Microlite 5in/5out is a good way to avoid those USB ground loop woes. They have more midi channels than most people’ll ever realistically need (5x16, so 80 channels of send and 80 receive).
What do you mean? are they literally dust collector or do you mean that as an expression meaning they just don't have much use? Would like to know. planning on buying it :)
@@thestatpow5 My experience with faders is, that they start to crackle faster then rotators, because the dust comes in those faders. All my life I had lot's of synths and because of this, I have decided to no longer buy synths with faders. It happened to my Juno, Korg Delta, Roland JP 8000 and a few others.
@@brianlespoir6287 Sliders are more prone to those issues in general, but not always - Akai volume pots as an example are literal dust magnets, so.. Agree up to a point. But.. One thing with all these new Behringer retro items is that they are incredibly easy to take apart and clean. I've had a quick look inside my one and everything is easily accessible. Also, sliders are just how the Cat purrs, so changing that would make it a different animal. Just picturing the outrage if they did a CS80 or ARP2600 with rotaries instead of sliders.. 👀
@@Gainn I get ya point, but I don't like opening my synths. I already have a lot of synths, so I can be pretty picky about it. I only have the Monopoly on my list as next synth. This one sounds the most versatile of all the clones :) It really has a character
Just added one to my Behringer synth collection 😎 Sweetwater had it @ $199 U.S dollars. Insane for this beautiful synth
I did the same there was an incredible deal I couldn't resist!
A friend of mine had the original back in the late 70s it was really nice! From what I’ve heard of this clone it really nails it!
Also very nice demo!
Thanks. What a great synth! Just arrived today after listening to this the day before...

I picked one up recently, definitely recommend it.
A very nice demo - so simple and lovely. Thx also for the description of what you´ve made. I`ll try it out, once I get a cat.
Great demo. This is truly a Wild Cat that sounds great! I want one!
Beautiful sounding synth and love the directions you take it in. Awesome.
