It looks like the wood was Cherry burl. I made a pen from this wood a couple of years ago and had the same problem with a viod. I filled it with epoxy like you show, but I did not have dyes at that time. What I used was brass shavings that I got from my local hardware store's key making machine. The end result was fantastic and I was able to sell the pen for more than I would have gotten if the blank did not have the void. Since then I have made more of this type of pen using Cherry burl that I am sure has voids. The customers love them.
