Jon himself said it perfectly when asked if he was nervous about the fight considering the move up to the new weight division, he responded something along the lines of: "Of course there was nerves. A lion and a cow during a fight both have the same adrenaline, nerves, and rush going through them. The only difference between them is that the lion wants to be there." This wasn't a lion vs lion fight to begin with. If you add it all up Ciryl mentally was the cow. He truly did not want to be there. But after Francis left he knew he had no choice but to step in. And Jon knew that from the beginning.

I admire your conviction, but Jon was nowhere near the worst version of himself we've ever seen.
While taking no damage in the fight whatsoever he slipped a punch from a dangerous puncher, attacked the legs and hips (fight IQ and timing on point) and took Gane to ground. In less than a minute, he's nearly snapped the guys neck and made him quit. It was a masterful performance.

This reminds me a bit of when Henry fought Mighty Mouse the first time. I believe that ended within 2 or 3 minutes as well. Ciryl respected Jon’s abilities so much that it took him out of his game & also make poor decisions like not fighting the hands when in a choke. Ciryl seems like a humble classy guy. I don't think he was scared but he panicked. He probably did not expect John to take him down that early into the fight. There was a moment when both John and Ciryl were facing each other on the ground and John was leveling up to squeeze Ciryl's neck but Ciryl panicked and didn't realise he could have also had John in a guillotine. Granted it probably wouldn't have led to a submission but it could've avoided his own early submission. So yes, ultimately it comes down to a lack of wrestling skills or IQ but Ciryl wasn't scared, he panicked and didn't know what to do in that moment.

One thing that Ciryl kept saying all week that stuck with me whenever he got asked whether all of this got under his skin was his response saying that nothing really gets to him because he got into the sport late. I took it to mean that the magnitude of what was at stake and Jon's accolades didn't mean much to him beacuse he wasn't doing MMA during that time. I wonder if he inadvertently ended up making a safety net for himself the more he repeated it, where instead of blissful "ignorance" it grew into doubt (or at least let a little of it seep in) and the moment got the better of him.

Massively dissappointed in Cyril. Felt like he thinks his striking alone will get him to a championship, and thats far from the truth. He's argubaly the best striker in the division, and everyone knew Jon was going to take him down. Why on earth he hasnt worked on his TDD, since Ngannou is beyond me. He looked like a fish out of water, as soon as Jon got a hold of him. If he still decides to not work on his TDD after that loss to Jones, he'll go from being a contender to being top 10 at best, as all his opponents will just take him down. As far as Jones goes, its still hard to tell how good he is, because that Gane fight showed us nothing. I think he'll beat Stipe as Stipe is in his 40's now, theres no up and coming young heavyweights who are well rounded enough to give Jones a challenge apart from maybe Aspinall after he comes back from his injury. The division is a little stale at the moment.

I don't think Ciryl was scared but he panicked. Hopefully he'll go work on his wrestling. I don't think Ciryl was scared, I think he was just surprised by the strength. Jon listed off his lift numbers the other day and they're pretty impressive. His brothers are both really strong as well so he's probably got it in the genetics.
Ciryl needs to get himself to a place that has real wrestling and I don't think he'll find that kind of training in France. Ciryl is young as far as heavyweights go so he could easily come back from this with a year or two of training with heavyweight wrestlers elsewhere.

Then Jon got his hands on him and put him in a couple spots he's never been in, and just steam rolled him. He was overwhelmed the moment he couldn't just overpower Jon.
Otherwise, I think he was going to be content sitting on the outside, trying to slide in & out popping Jones, who I'm sure he assumed was going to be slower than him(since Jon has never had a reputation for quick hands or anything). By all means Gustaffson and Reyes are all better boxers than Jon Jones. Jon won with leg kicks and takedown threat. Jon is a worse wrestler than Daniel Cormier. However, he has better understanding in BJJ and uses his leverage well. Jon Jones is the jack of all traits, but the master of none. He does everything better than the average normal fighter but he isn't the best at anything in particular. He is able to use all of his skills to be a threat to any fighter.

I'm so glad someone has actually picked up on this... Ciryl lost that fight before he even walked into the octagon. There wasn't anything special about what Jon did to win that fight. Cirly literally bent over and patiently waited for Jon to come and choke him out. I've never seen anything like it. He was paralyzed with fear.
As Chael correctly stated; why would he allow himself to be cornered towards the fence and throw an impromptu, uncalculated, reactive, ill-timed, "spinning" kick all whilst going backwards against a seasoned grappler. Doesn't make any sense...

That fight almost felt surreal for Ciryl

I said same. Cyril was Scared or the fight was ARRANGED

I disagree with Chael. Cyril got beat fair and square but he didn’t turn around and run from the stand up. It’s exactly the opposite. He overcommitted on a back hand jab and Jon went under and around it, grabbed his waist from the back. End of the fight. Cyril never had the grappling skills to get up after Jon dropped his weight on his hips. But he didn’t run.

Since when was a body slam disqualification in college wrestling. Its admittedly more than 20 years ago but I don't remember that

I thought he was scared to, but then I really thought about it, and Alot of fighters that fight somewhat similar to Ciryl Gane stand up use the first round to try & feel things out (similar to Anderson silva & even Jones at times) & maybe he was really cautious, & was expecting a 5 rd Jon Jones & expected a Reyes, Santos Jones but bigger, as someone who fought Silva & had a similar experience with Jones yourself Chael, it's just something to think about, he likely wasn't scared but he was way to cautious, & should of expected a monster & been ready from the break, I think Ciryl was more dangerous than Stipe & potentially even Francis but it went this way, Jones is just a hard bargain and motivated heavyweight Jones might just be the worst case scenario, but we'll see, respect as always im sure it's hard seeing Jones slowly creeping up on your goat status Chael, he'll never make it tho unless he fights 6x a year till 2045

@@kev30631 but Chael is discussing even before the wrestling started tho, to my point he may of even been feeling out thinking Jones might go wrestle heavy Rd one & just lost position badly, he isn't a great wrestler,it's true

I wanna see Jamahal Hill can Jones at 205. Jamahal would be a bit weak on the wrestling but he got that dawg in him.

I'll give Chael credit in his superhuman ability at lacking self-awareness, forgetting that he was beaten to bloody pulp on the ground with a knee to the solar plexus to finish him off in a fetal position by Jon Jones. Despite Chael having an assist and help from Jon Jones' dislocated big toe, it didn't matter. Not exactly like Chael traded strikes in the pocket with Jon to say another guy looked scared trading strikes when Chael's bout with Jones left him covering up his head on the ground in a fetal position to avoid taking hits more punishment before a TKO stoppage.

Ciryl ran to get separation to set up a strike, Izzy does it all the time. But Jon's game plan was to stay stuck Ciryl and get his hands on him if he could. And only Jones would find quality in the take down he secured, and only he could accomplish it. If he can take Olympic wrestlers down, he can convert a sloppy take down on a striker. If you notice, his finish was almost identical to the choke he put on Machida, only Machida got up sooner.
