- The story behind Led Zeppelin's FIRST TWO shows at the L.A Forum on June 21st and 22nd, 1977. From the making of the famous bootleg Listen to This Eddie to the wardrobe stats for these concerts, it's a journey back to the galaxy of Los Angeles just weeks after the release of Star Wars. Touring both Presence and The Song Remains The Same, the band delivered a wall of sound attack with countless highlights that shocked California like a musical earthquake. Revisit John Bonham's frenetic Stainless Steel kit drumming, John Paul Jones metallic orchestration, Jimmy Page's doubleneck magician and Robert Plant's badgeholding authority. standing ovation for the realization of this chapter for you 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
stories say the tape recorder millard had under his wheelchair was stereo and had two good quality mics.he was seated on the 10th row in the middle which explains the fantastic sound.bonham "stole" the show on this one.as a drummer, you have a mountain of fantastic licks to learn and play from this show¡¡while watching i was thinking why people say the rolling stones are the greatest rock n roll band ever.to this day i don't understand that.thanks again for this👏👏👏👏👏
The Stones are the "Greatest "Rock and Roll" Band"....as Zep...is, in my estimation...more "ROCK," and not so much "roll"...Zep is a genre unto themselves...Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis were the real original "rock and roll" artists...and the Stones are much more aligned with "that" and american old-school blues and R&B, than the "progressive excesses" of Zeppelin....I mean..."Brown Sugar" is "Rock and Roll"..."Kashmir?...not so much. Great. Yes. But not in any sense of the term "rock-n-roll."
Thanks you Carlos! Stay tuned for Episode 2 coming up soon. As for the Stones, as a "musical movement" or "cultural influence" there 1963-1981 period is brilliant, because Jagger became a socialite (this backed up by Keith's bio), the band managed to develop close ties with music journalists and the "right" people in the media. Led Zeppelin was a different beast, it's hard to believe but they were underdogs throughout their career despite selling millions. Look at every tour until 1977, always the Stones stealing their thunder in the "big shot" magazines. Where i don't think The Stones deserve such a high pedestal is the fact they've carried on with many lineups and their post 1989 career is a parody of themselves. Musically i don't think they too as many risks and their live shows are NOT as diverse as Led Zeppelin. John Bonham defintiely made the band who they were....his death is more than tragic, it stopped the rock and roll world from keeping it's integrity i think. Best rock bands in my book: The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, no revolving door personnel and their influence....tremendous.
I think 10 rows may have been too close
I have recorded a few bands threw the years
Sometimes further away is better
Zeppelin transcends rock and roll, and the Rolling Stones.
I've never heard of 20 million people trying to get rolling stone tickets.
I was there for the 2nd night and the 6th night. Followed their limo back to their plane at LAX. Actually watched the plane takeoff.
That's sick Mark! Did they leave L.A on the 27th then? Monday night? Great stuff indeed.
I was also there on the 2nd night, what a great show!
That's really cool how old were you
Tell me everything I was only 10 in 77.
My brother saw them in Cincinnati in 77. Mom wouldn't let me go.
47 years ago, today, I witnessed the concert of my life! Thanks memories JCM😎
YOU WITNESSED ROCK HISTORY wow!!!!! Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 of the series, coming up real soon!

I’m not a Star Wars fan or anything but dammit that’s the best thumbnail yet - and the standard has been high.
I am not a Star Wars fan either but i just think it fits the times, imagine Zeppelin in Space!! Thanks for watching Matt! Episode 2 is out now, Epiosde 3 premieres July 13th!
The Silver Rarities Master Series was my first ever Zep boot. What a show. I knew every song from the studio albums, but this was the real deal. I owned every Forum show on bootleg.
A great set to own, these shows are historic and have to be in every Zeppelin fan's collection indeed. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 coming up soon.
Robert's in between song dialog is wonderfully hilarious and over-the-top!
They are the stuff of legends, he eases out the tension of the average rockstar, not full of himself like Don Henley or Roger Waters, but tongue-in-cheek spontaneity.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Oh, I 1000% agree. Both of them are tools. I love how Waters felt he had to re-record DSOTM....🤣
Hahahah yeah...i mean it's his band but re-recording a masterpiece is like, are you that bored with your money and freedom? I respect Waters the artist, Gilmour not so much but everytime i see a Robert Plant interview i think to myself...this guy keeps it real.
RIP.. Mike Millard

I was 13 when they played the Fab Forum, so yeah I missed this tour (made up for it seeing Van Halen at a high school rt b4 they signed). One of my sisters went, maketing/airplay build up was overwhelmingly HUGE ! She still gushes over that show, one for the ages... can't wait for this!
Who gives a fuck about You seeing Van Halen?
I was at that show. I mailed in tickets and got that night.
Kieth Moon was on stage.
30 years later I found out my barber & I sat a few feet apart
That year we went to the black crows & jimmy page at the Greek
You were at the Third night when Keith Moon showed up on stage, that's INCREDIBLE. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 coming up soon.
@@BOOMER-DAD liar
OMG, the opening is great! .. just started watching, had to pause to say that.
The 19977 Tour, with TSRTS opening was out of this world!!!
Thanks for watching Dave! Glad you dug Caesar's Chariot in space hehe. Stay tuned for Episode 2 coming up soon.
Although I’ve been to the Forum many times. It was the site of my first rock concert in 83. Saw Tom Petty and Bob Dylan perform together around 87, I believe. Never saw Zeppelin, too young 😢
Hey man Petty and Dylan is a very good deal at the Forum. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 of the series, coming up real soon!
I was 8 years old in 1975 and of course, 9 years old in 1976, but if I had a time machine- just listening to all of the bands that you listed- man. What a time! like I said, I was alive but I wasn't going to experience any of this. I suppose listening to Mike's bootlegs would be the closest thing to a time machine.!
Bootlegs are time travelling machines indeed! Thanks for watching, stay tuned for Episode 3 of the series!
Good stuff man. These forum shows are legendary.
Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 of the series, coming up real soon!
Great job. Really enjoyed it.
I loved Roberts delivery in 1977 . He was much stronger than 1975 and was in command of LZ a bit more.
These shows really demonstrate just how good John Bonham was.
When Keith Moon introduces him in a following LA show he stated the man with Buddy Rich arms. He wasn't far off.
Yes, Robert was a better singer than 1975. Overall and also, much more grounded. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 of the series, coming up real soon! June 23rd and 25th.
Thanks Jose! Very good, sir. Yea, man, I actually checked out this show or the show on Jene 22nd, 1977, from Listen to this Eddie. I listened to the concert a couple of weeks ago. Unbelievable. Thank you for telling us about the guy who recorded the show!
You got it! June is always L.A celebration month i guess hehe. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 coming up soon.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories 🙂👍. You're welcome! I'm looking forward to it!
There's one word I wish you had used while "Nobody's Fault But Mine" played, when Bonham and Jones came in and that was power! The power those two displayed that night on so much of the show was just astonishing, taking nothing away from Page's guitar work or Robert's vocals either! It astounded me, in listening to the bootleg for the first time, how three people (again not discounting Robert, just setting the vocals aside for a moment) could generate such a wall of sound! I took my headphones off three hours after the concert started and I could kind of imagine how it must have felt to actually have been there and had the beat pulsing through your head and your chest!
Power indeed, you gotta love the 1977 onstage sound. Jones' Alembic bass and Bonham's stainless steel kit made everything sound great. Like you i wonder what being there was like, the wall of sound effect. Superb! Thank you for watching, stay tuned for Episode 2 coming up soon!
Yet another masterclass of Led Zeppelin storytelling. Incredibly well researched and a meticulous attention to detail of probably the most infamous bootleg recording of all time. Bonham absolutely on fire. Maybe the quality of the marching powder in LA had something to do with the power of the performance, who knows. Mike Millard, Rest In Peace and thank you. JCM delivers once more.
Thank you very muchf Rob! Researching this part of the story was quite entertaining, like you i share a fascination for 1977. I believe touring in July was a mistake, June should have been the finale...a grand finale. Marching powders hahaha...well you mean Heineken's fabrication process of course, Bonzo's favorite beer in L.A.
in this case, the powder didn't had anything to do.as crazy bonham could be,he always prided himself in being spot on for the shows.they say he was upset and angry about that night in san diego, which didn't had anything to do with drinks or drugs but to a very upset stomach.no one knew how he got through the whole show in that condition.for the next show (the forum),he was determined to blow up the stage that night.he made some comment to page about it. he wanted payback, and he did got it¡¡
Can’t EFFIN Wait !

Great work my friend, Bonham in 1977 was a beast.
He was insanely good, how can people dare to call them "dinosaurs" or "burnout" by then hahah. 99% of rock bands wish they had BONHAM to say the least. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 of the series, coming up real soon!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-StoriesThanks for the great reviews. On par with the cat doing the Jimi Hendrix day to day docu-series. Keep up the great work. My uncle had tickets for the Chicago Stadium shows in '80 that were to never be. You should do a review of the Richfield Coliseum show from April. I think that is top three from the tour, next to Seattle Coliseum, and one of the Forum Shows. Definitely Hot Shit, except I think they were hotter in '73 and '75. I think they were just tighter, and it was probably due to all the distractions that manifested during this '77 US Tour. I mean you get rid of Cincy, Tampa, and Oakland and it's a great tour. Anyway JMHO. Cheers!!!!
This will be awesome. JCM is always quality. 🤙
Yep 👍
That was So Awesome Jose. I wish I could've been there

13 years old June 1977. Was under assumption the last 6 months I along with my friends would be attending. When the time to get tickets came, my mom said I was too young to go to concerts and wait til next year. Missed Pink Floyd and the balloon pig at the Coliseum too...

This was great, almost like the 'Eddie of the JCM docs-it had it all. SW credits, and references with the whole band in character and Jimmy's SW sound on the 22nd. The requisite dig at The Eagles, a few Page 404 errors and a few cheeky jabs at Ginger Baker-I heartily approve of those!
Love that you dedicated a decent amount of credit to Mike the Mic without whom we wouldn't be here watching this. His great achievements even with the (not inconsiderable) shadow of PG looming, actually made me sad to think how much more LZ stuff we could have had he not been so overly zealous in censoring fan recordings, especially during shows he had no intention of having professionally done. Plant got some great vocals out (and some hilarious Plantations), Jimmy and JPJ were creative and focused And my Bonzo😍...what can I say about his performance, seriously what was he ON on the 21st and where can I get some? 🤭
I think Peter Grant just adds to the love for these bootlegs. Sometimes hardships is what makes a historic document extra special. Look nowadays, everyone can record a show, HD, multiangles, etc, yet no one revisits them anymore. John Bonham's touring doctor was definitely a hero on the 21st. I'm sure he gave him a good shot of B12 Vitamin, that stuff will make strong in seconds. No kidding, i had to have that once as i had a nasty flu and a 3 hour show ahead. Thanks for watching Elle! Stay tuned for Episode 2 coming up soon.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Storiesa steady diet of banana 🍌 daiquiris.
It's amazing. Amidst a tour rife with subpar playing, they managed to pull one of the best Zep performances EVER
Its incredible indeed. Whoever dares to say the 1977 Tour sucks...needs to check on Bonham. The stuff he played here is brilliant to say the least. I suspect people go after Jimmy's sticky fingers but overrule the GROUP sound and that is a mistake hehe. Thanks for watching, stay tuned for Episode 2.
And Jimmy mostly conquered his sticky fingers this night. @@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
Jimmy's sticky fingers are better than many still hehe
I've often noticed that Roberts register seemed to stretch back to his old voice when they did acoustic numbers or simply when the music is quieter. It seems like whenever he puts more force behind it to make it louder is when his voice breaks.
Great observation. Yes, the acoustic stuff showcased his sense of melody and capacity. Whenever people accuse him of being "done" by 1977, it's so far from the truth. Now, thinking of the WALL of sound he had behind, i'm sure forcing his vocals was inevitable. Would any of us "take it easy" with John Bonham's drums chasing every word we sing? hehe. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 coming up soon.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories You make a very good point. I think it's conclusive then, it was more about Robert's volume than his range. I used to think Robert lost his voice from belting high notes. Turns out it was more the belting than the high notes themselves. Trying to be heard above the noise. I blame the crappy PA's he often had to use. Also... you know... Cocaine, cigarettes and not sleeping.
Bonham bass roll+snare during TSRTS is off the charts on 6/21. Plants best show from 77, sang his arse off on sick again, the acoustic section, Kashmir! All great. Page is at least awake for 77 but still not hitting the solos. Wish we had a healthier plant in 75 like 77 it would have been devastating
It was an incendiary spectacle Derek, indeed. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 of the series, coming up real soon!

Thanks for watching Michael! Stay tuned for Episode 2 of the series, coming up real soon! We're going to the third and fourth night.
Great video and documentary.
Now I know what I missed out on by not being able to go to the show because my mom said I was too young (one month away from turning 12 years old).
Life works in mysterious ways.
The audio from the first night was really amazing. I've seen and heard at least 40 concerts at The Forum and it was never known for having good acoustics. For Mike the Mic to sneak in the Nakamichi AC/DC recorder in a wheelchair and get that quality sound is amazing. I'm not a proponent of bootleggers making recordings for profit, and he was taking a huge risk knowing what can happen to people caught recording without authorization. Usually it ends with no recording device, no tapes and a hospital visit.
Looking forward to more of this series.
Mike Millard is a hero right? Oh man, bummer you couldn't go.I mean yeah this show really killed it and i think June 22nd is better in SOME parts. Thanks for watching Kenneth! Stay tuned for Episode 2 of the series, coming up real soon!
Fantastic work. My LZ fan career began when n about 78 I think. I missed the kingdoms show, as I was probably 12 and hadn’t quite arrived. In the next year or so, I discovered it, via LZ 4, in probably the 8th grade. Quickly followed by HOTH, III, PG, II, I, Presence. In that order.
Sometime probably during my infatuation with HOTH I made a new friend. Jeff, he played guitar, no, he channeled guitar, by way of Jimmy Page! Jeff would plug in his Carvin Les Paul copy, through a Morley Wawa, MXR dist+, and MXR phase and show me how Dazed and Confused was played while the turntable was spinning TSRTS!
He played every single song, the studio albums, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 2112, etc
In 9th grade he was in a band that played bars, only 2 of the other members was still underage, Mitch (drummer) and Ritchie (my young childhood friends older brother who was in high school) on bass. The last two read charts, and were first string in their school band. Jeff, I can’t remember if he read, he was just the teenage legend who everyone knew was Pages unknown clone.
I followed Jeff till his death in 2004. Never attained his deserved recognition outside those early years.
My zeppelin bootleg collection includes some of the LA 77 shows I think. I stopped collecting years ago, but still have around 100 vinyl’s, 200 misc single disc and 2,3 and 4 CDr ones, and maybe 100 still non digital cassettes.
I’ve heard perhaps half of them.
Every once in an awhile I dig out a CD that was burned onto my computer, swap it onto my phone and go for a drive. I have a kickass JL Audio system in my car, with a high quality Pioneer HU, so driving to a board sourced bootleg is great. Some audience sourced shows are good as well. Most sound bad, so those shows are often hard to enjoy, unless they are somehow standouts.
My favorites are any Seattle shows, I think I gave all of them, Gonzaga University is great only because of its existence. Sound is shit.
Hoping this video is as great as it is so far, I’m only 5 min into it. ❤
Great memories you shared, really made my day! Honored that you tune in to this series. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 of the series, coming up real soon!

I thought everything was out in the open about the incident and with the main protagonists now passed away, what kind of distance are you wary of - The Ghosts Of Grant, Bonham & Bindon?

Safe distance i mean some of the other things, after the incident. There is some speculation as to how were things handled. I have my personal opinion on the brawl itself so it's just finding middle ground.

One thing I know for sure, the acoustics were not great. I saw the Stones with Van Halen opening there in either 77 or 78, and you couldn’t really discern what was being played, especially when it got really loud with VH. Definitely couldn’t appreciate Eddie’s solos…
The tickets sold out instantly, the only reason I was able to get one is because my dad knew someone in the governor’s office.

The title of this boot SHOULD HAVE been “Listen To This Ginger…and Buddy!” San Diego 6-19 is a difficult and disturbing show to sit through. My mate and I listened to some of it the other night - because we HAD to (upon my insistence.) There are a few bursts of usual brilliance (surprisingly) but largely this is a tough one to sit through and knowing Bonzo had three hours to go is just…rough. Whatever demons were chewing away at the departed drum giant is anyone’s guess - and frankly none of anybody’s business but his own and his family’s. FF two nights and to their favorite venue: after two years/three months of absence there was much to prove this night and Bonzo more than made it up to himself and his band mates. Well he’s just kicking the living sht out of anyone/anything that dares come too close to the drum rostrum. Imagine a first hand account from Hinton? Good lord. Waiting for this episode for me personally was like waiting for King Kong in 1976 (also a John Barry Prendergast soundtrack score) to come to my local movie theater, and me at 9 years old. I lost sleep in anticipation and that’s no lie. Night two (the only night for Jim in full Dragon suit) is a very killer show too, riding on the great vibes from the previous night. The third night…feelings of sluggishness were beginning to creep in a little bit (and that dreaded Kashmir mishap) but Bonzo was certain to show everyone on hand who the better drummer was that night… Moonie had no chance 🤪. The final night on the 27th in my opinion sounds about as good as this opener! Thank you Jose for this great episode and of course, Mike the Mic. We’re forever indebted to you for capturing the impossible!
Thank you for this mighty comment, loved it! San Diego, man...what a tough show to go through like you said, i still can't sit down through it without having too many thoughts on my mind. Man, can't wait for you to watch Episode 2....coming up real soon!
Thanks Jose! Looking forward to ANY and ALL of your content.
Thank you thank you thank you for this review of the most badass live recording I've ever heard...picked it up from Ear Xtacy in Louisville in 1982 and never looked back. Did miss just a bit the coverage of the "Mo-mo-mo-mo-monkey on my ba-ba-ba-bad back..." Robert indeed was "starting to cook..."
I really do wish they'd tackled In My Time of Dying on this night with this energy, though
Yes, opening night was ideal for In My Time of Dying but on the other hand, they were playing so fast (in a good way) that this song requires a mid tempo cool. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 coming up soon.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories so, In My Time of Dying is one of the few Led Zeppelin songs that they never really did a better job of live vs the studio version. When Bonzo takes over and plays LEAD DRUMS in the studio - and Jimmy let's him - man! that song can take me places! So in your opinion and extensive experience with live Zeppelin tracks, what is the best version of that song, live?
I saw my 1st concert at THE FORUM in 1980 FOGHAT / BLACKFOOT. Was planning on seeing ZEP on the next U.S. tour until Bonham passed away. I recorded a ROD STEWART show in Long Beach 1982 that Mike THE MIC also taped!!! THANX for sharing!!!

Cosmic Vagabond! Hey how are you! Glad you've enjoyed this one. Episode 2 is out now and Episode 3 series finale premieres this coming Saturday July 13th!
That guitar line cutout at the outset of Sick Again.... I love Led Zeppelin. Even when they experience a technical glitch, they come back in like a 700hp muscle car whose carburetor's stuck secondaries finally kick in. It's glorious
That's a great way to put it, this band is always a treat to study, their on stage power. They say The Stones and Floyd, no way, Bonham alone is a highlight after highlight. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 coming up soon.
I was there on night 3 06-23-77. I was 15 and I was in heaven! Best show ever ❤

Omg, I LOVE that thumbnail. Anyway, the LA shows were the best shows of Zeppelin's career imo. Say what you will about Page and the band in '77 but they were fantastic at these shows. And the setlist is phenomenal.
They were fantastic like you say, Jimmy Solo, ChewBonham, Rob Skywalker and Jonesy Wan Kenobi! Thanks for watching, Episode 2 is out now. Stay tuned for Episode 3 of the series!

At age 10 I had the chance to see Zeppelin at the LA Forum in 77 but my Mom for whatever reason said no. I never really forgave her. She died 4 days ago which is by far the lowest point of my life and I now forgive her. RIP Mom.
RIP to your mom.
My deceased mother broke the news to me about Bonzo's death.
My dad said the only way I could go was if he came with me as a chaperone. He got us tickets for the Superdome show, which of course never happened.
I am so sorry for your loss Robert. May music be your light in these troubled times. My best wishes and energy going your way.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories -Thank you. It's a really difficult time right now. Everyone at some point deals with family loss but losing a Mother to illness is almost overwhelming. We had a good familial relationship and her loss is devastating and hasn't fully sunk-in. I remember her saying "don't worry there'll be other concerts to see when you're older." So it was an age thing. I remember replying "This is Zeppelin the biggest band in the world and there won't be another chance to see a band like this again. Even at 10 I knew the opportunity. I might play some LZ to ease mind somewhat during this difficult period. Good channel and thanks again.

In 50 years of listening on tape or live, I have never heard Bonham play that fast and extended, surreal sounding.
Right? Bonzo really went after the Championship glory here. I did a special remix of the audio to further enhance the stereo!
A small correction: During the 1977 tour, Jimmy was doing the backing vocals for Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp, not Bonham. Thank you for this documentary, been waiting a long time for this. Awesome!
This is strange you know? I've seen this observation several times. Are you basing this on the Seattle video where Jimmy sings? I just don't hear this voice at the Forum you know? It sounds like a beefier vocal part. Thanks for Watching!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
Not just the Seattle video. All the 8mm videos and photos show Jimmy singing. Listen to the '77 soundboards, it's clearly Jimmy's voice.
I need to double-check. Great thing about this community is that you guys KNOW this stuff so i always make lots of coffee when making these hehe

Thanks for watching Matt! Episode 2 is out now, Epiosde 3 premieres July 13th!
Hi, Jose!
I too have an endless fascination for that year of 1977.
Regarding your statement: ‘Yeah his body took a toll with the 1977 diet he chose...it’s crazy.’
Coincidently, and perhaps serendipitously - with me having taking charge of my life the previous year in 1976 - by 1977, I was already getting very much interested in health, fitness & nutrition. So, when I read that 1977 interview with Jimmy Page, entitled: ‘Ask the Answer Man,’ by Angie Errigo, involving ‘light rum, food protein, bananas & a blender’ (the Pagey Banana Daiquiri recipe) and originally printed in *New Musical Express* and then reprinted in *CREEM* magazine in the U.S., I was sold (and vindicated) so to speak.
And I have been drinking vegan protein shakes every morning for breakfast since 1977 - plus, I take vitamins, minerals & micro-mineral supplements, drink only artesian spring water, add a water alkalizing additive to my beverages, supplying me with even more trace micro-minerals - and I still have the same exact waist size as when I was a teenager and in my 20s. 🍹
His liquid diet is one thing, problem is what he mixed that with, you know, the personal lifestyle choices which i am sure you don't follow thus your health has been in a great place since 1977. I think breakfast and lunches are overrated to an extent and the amount of food we need is certainly pushed by business narratives more than nutrition. I need to try out this you mention, eating less stuff is better but i can tell you after working a script i NEED glucose.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Try using raw organic cane sugar mixed with a little bit of organic stevia sweetener; you will then have the best of both worlds - some sugar - but not too much. And one more thing, if you take a multivitamin supplement, make sure it contains a good amount of the essential trace mineral chromium, which is needed for the pancreas to function properly - to produce insulin. Plus, as an added benefit, the stevia extract also supports the pancreas.
Nice.
Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 coming up soon.
I love these videos, I particularly love the mirrored effect you use during the concert playback. Very cool.
Hi Jose ! First of all, I usually say that if it was recorded by Mike Millard then it's good, very good stuff! This man was awesome, the wheelchair trick was genius. I imagine Grant meeting Millard up there and shouting “you rascal, you fooled me all the time!” 😂 As for this episode, it makes me think that these people lived through an incredible time, so many fantastic bands, great songs, cool movies, it seems like the world was a better place than it is today. I really like Zeppelin's shows in 1977, I know not everything was perfect but you know, love can be blind and deaf too... that reference to Jimmy's black suit, there's a video with Plant having fun saying “Mr. Page’s pants are falling down!“ They don't show anything but I would have liked to have seen Jimmy half naked 😂 thanks for this great episode Jose Sensei, excellent research, editing and presentation as always. See you 👋
Sensei Marcia! Hey , i cracked up laughing when you said you'd like to see Page half exposed hahahah, your father would be angry at that comment. You are right these people lived an incredible time, from many angles it seems like centuries ago. There WAS a world of opportunity and excitement i guess. I hope you enjoy Episode 2, working on it right now and i'm making lots of coffee of course. Enjoy your week!

hahaha well, I’m not a teen who needs to be protected anymore so I have the freedom to make some jokes with my dad in that sense. When I said that I would have liked to see Jimmy half-naked he replied mockingly: “You would be disappointed, back then he was thin as a bamboo”. According my dad, no one saw anything, Mr. Page pants didn’t fall down but it was pretty close, he just forgot to put the belt…😆 waiting for the next episode, take care, don’t overdo it with coffee (coffee and pizza, I suppose) ☕️🍕 a great week to you too 😊

Also when Pink Floyd played Kemper Arena Roger Waters was not lip syncing either (he would start lip syncing on the third performance of The Wall in Los Angeles after throwing his voice out the first night leaving David Gilmour to sing the last verse of Hey You on February 8 and parts of The Trial).
So Roger sang to tape in 1980?
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Roger most certainly did start lip syncing The Trial as of the third Wall concert in Los Angeles (The Pros and Cons Tour he was lip syncing more and the lip syncing snowballed in 2006 as he threw his voice out despite the fact that he quit smoking in 1975 but screaming and pushing the voice the way he did recording Animals, The Wall, The Final Cut and Pros and Cons took a toll).
David Gilmour on the other hand has always sung live and won’t use tapes nor click tracks. In fact he sang almost all of Dogs on the Animals Tour except the last verse and if the song was too high he would change the delivery but keep in the same key structure.
Fascinating stuff . Question i saw his most recent tour (Waters) very close to the stage as i was given tickets as a gift. He sounded like an old man singing...was this tape?
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-StoriesYes it was tape. David Gilmour sings live and I saw Pink Floyd on the final tour in 1994, skipped my Senior Prom to do so and was blown away. David Gilmour sang great despite the fact that he flubbed one lyric on Keep Talking and forgot one line on High Hopes as it was overcast and rainy and was nervous about the rain pouring on his lap steel which he played the ending solo after tossing the towel off the stool he sat on to play. His solos were spot on and his Fender Stratocaster guitar solos especially on Comfortably Numb were awesome. David’s last tour he sang live and sounded great and does a series of shows. I stopped seeing Roger after The Wall because of the lip syncing and saw him five times between 1999 and 2012. He didn’t mime on his 1999/2000 shows except on Every Strangers Eyes but the rest was all live warts and all.
Only member of Zeppelin I saw was Robert Plant in 2002 when he opened up for The Who and the Dreamland album was just released and was blown away that I bought the CD a few days later. Plus did three Zeppelin tracks and hit the high G on Babe I’m Gonna Leave You. I kick myself for missing Page/Plant and especially the Clarksdale Tour.
Yes Steve Hillage and Gong! Nice
The prog side of things! Thanks for watching Steve! Stay tuned for Episode 2 of the series, coming up real soon!
I was there for the 3rd night show, I clearly remember Ias 19. we had seats behind the band which I thought were going to be horrible but it was just the oposite. We got to see all kinds of things going on back stage. At one point during one of their sets there was some crazy guy on his hands and knees behind Bonham who kept slapping their gong. Plant finaly notices the guy and pulls him out on stage and says Kieth Moon everybody Kieth Moon! Moon and Bonham end up doing a drum solo with Moon standing in front of the drum set while Bonham stayed seated. It was beyond epic! It wasn't but a few short years later and they were both dead.
Randy this is a great story, so cool you were actually there....WOW. You're gonna love Episode 2 of the series i'm sure, coming up real soon!
Just imagine if the tour had ended with these LA shows. The band goes back to England on a high note. There are not two crummy shows in Seattle and Tempe. There is no ugly assault in Oakland and conflict with Bill Graham. And maybe if Plant is at home Karac lives.
Brad i agree that they should have ended their 1977 Tour here. To at least avoid Bill Graham altogether would have been great. Oakland was much more than a backstage brawl, if you look at the state of play of the business...the answers are in hidden in plain sight. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2!
That's insane how many big named bands played the Forum in a given year back then. Imagine trying to go see them all with todays ripoff ticket prices.
Impossible in this economy haha. Yeah, it's mindblowing. Thanks for watching Steve! stay tuned for Episode 2!
Pink Floyd never played there due to the size of the stage and instead played Anaheim Stadium in 1977, 1988 and The Rose Bowl in 1994. David Gilmour played the Forum in 2016 supporting Rattle That Lock and played a great cross section of Pink Floyd material and solo material.

I might be wrong, but I seem to recall reading something about Jimmy's red guitar at the forum not being #3, and that it's actually an unknown guitar he used once. I might be misremembering though. The 21st is my favorite show of all time, beating March 21, 1975 and anything prior.
This was his #3, it may look different but it was his beloved guitar for Over the Hills, curious how he used it on certain things right? Thanks for watching Gabriel, stay tuned for Episode 2!
Also the ill fated sequel to The Exorcist which was Exorcist II The Heretic (which was a financial success but paled in comparison to the original) was released four days before the L.A. gigs. Also an interesting fact about the MSG shows Linda Blair attended two of the shows at MSG and one of the Pink Floyd MSG shows in July as she took a year off from acting to focus on her equestrian showjumping hobby and was dealing with the lifestyle choices that would get her in trouble with the law at year’s end.
Exorcist II oh yes...with the infamous Pazuzu. I've watched it a couple of times, there's some fascination with this flop. How can you screw things so badly after the 1973 CLASSIC i wonder haha. Linda Blair was at both shows? He definitely partied hard in the late 70s, no blame to her, she was a star, but her career certainly did not pick up...her posing for that magazine didn't help either. Rick James would disagree with me.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories She was at two of the six MSG Zep shows (a reviewer from the New York Times spotted her in the audience at MSG for Zep on two of the six shows) and she was also at one of the four Floyd shows at MSG (she lived in Connecticut at the time). For the record the Rick James tale he made up as he wrote his book while under the influence and dying and Linda got sober in early 1979 and dated Tommy Shaw of Styx and left him in 1982 over his drug and alcohol abuse and infidelities. Rick and Linda were friends but were not as romantic as the press claimed (in fact Linda severed ties with Rick over his drug addiction (her story on the fallout has never changed whereas Rick's did after he went back to using in 1999 after his stroke and the BtM had aired a year before) as she was finishing her four years probation and anti-drug speeches punishment for the 1977 cocaine and 1978 marijuana busts). I watched the Behind the Music which he made in 1997 (aired in 1998) before he relapsed and changed his story about her (she was interviewed as well and her views on what happened have never changed).
Great Doc Jose, I enjoyed as usual 👍💰
Do you hate Meatloaf or just Bat Out of Hell? Lol
Just Bat out of Hell lol. Actually Bat Out of Hell 2 is a solid record.
I was 10 years old in 1977 my brother saw them in Cincinnati that same year. He was also at the who show in Cincinnati where 11 people were trampled to death. I think one person was killed at the Zeppelin show..
Saw them a few days before in San Diego. My only complaint is that it was WAY too loud!! Btw. Does John Bindon and For Badge Holders Only sound familiar? It should if you know the LA 77’ Bootlegs.

My favourite Mike Millard recording is Genesis at the Roxy 1980. It’s unbelievable.
Oh yes, that is a monumental piece of work from one of the band's best tours. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 coming up soon.
Really good doco!! I have a copy of Listen to this Eddie, its really good!!
The Outro of No Quarter is one of the best musical moments in the 1977 tours, but maybe it was Achillies Last Stand, there are some epic examples from '77. I quite like Roberts voice in this era, it became more about the texture, control and flavor, less about the screaming.......Bonham plays like no other rock drummer can, he was so in touch with his playing at this stage and I can't think of another drummer who could even come close to the power of Bonham, but at the same time, he was dynamic and played so intelligently.
JPJ is is the glue, he's mammoth in his contribution to keeping Zeppelin on the tracks.
However, sorry but Page really lost his way, I want to like what hes doing so bad, but the booze and drugs really took their toll, cleverly disguised as food poisoning a few times, there were always glimmers of something that could have been, but overshadowed by out of tune guitars under bends, overbends, overshooting notes and chords, sticky fingers syndrome, missing things, the self indulgent twaddle and that horrific gimmick "solo" he does with the Eventide H949 to awful effect......it pains and almost embarrasses me because hes my favourite guitar player and I feel we all know how much better it could have been..............But then he did some back with a vengeance in the latter days of the Page/Plant tours, his guitar playing through that period makes me proud and he was unstoppable, his shows with the Black Crowes showed how incredible he could be, I'm so happy he made it through those dark times.
Kev i can understand why you feel this way about Page, thing is, i just can't hear it on the recording as in "wow he sucks" you know? As a guitarist and fan, i can say there were some problems but the locking in system with Bonham made them carry on with the show like very few you know? I agree Page and Plant got his guitar mojo back. The show in CHILE 1996 remains one of his BEST.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I speak as a guitarist and a huge fan, but also someone who has been around those destructive substances and the damage they can do....Im in my late 50's living clean and natural for over 30 years now. Jimmy never sucked, but rather struggled and battled those demons, and thats what I hear in his playing, it makes me a little sad.....I know I single him out a lot, Bonham ultimately and tragically paid the price in the end which was devastating in so many ways...But somehow back then JB kept his playing together, maybe not so much on the 1980 tour, but it was never as obvious and it was with Pagey... I love the way you can find the jewels in Pagey's playing, and I enjoy your takes on it too!!
Ive been sober for 8 years so nothing but tremendous respect for you Kev. I agree that substances take the fun out of groups and social circles. Glad we are healthy and still enjoying the music we love!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Thank you, and a special thank you for re-igniting my love for Led Zeppelin's music, I very much appreciate your astounding effort into all of you documentaries!! I was at a record store a few years back and had a friendly debate with the owner on what was the superior 77 bootleg - Destroyer or LTTE. I've always been partial to the concerts at the Forum.
Listen to This Eddie wins, but Destroyer may be more consistent. I need to revisit that one to give you a 100% sure answer. At the moment i put EDDIE up 80%. Stay tuned for Episode 2 Bud!
For a 77 show and the disaster awaiting them a month later in Oakland, these sound solid. As I've said before, in comments, Zeppelin peaked in 1973 and while there were moments of brilliance in '75 and '77, the hype and excesses of the band and crew did them in by '77. Not to mention popular musical tastes were changing. Although for us young, Bay Area kids bands like Zeppelin, Van Halen, Scorpions, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, were supreme. Local radio stations, like KOME and KJJO (KLOS in Los Angeles) had these bands on steady rotation. By the 1980's, we had to endure Hair Metal and New Wave 😐
New Wave was a weird change right? I believe this contributed more to Grunge than Hair Metal....at least they could shred haha. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 coming up soon.
Bonham's true age of rage came around this time. He was known as a guy that could run hot or cold, around this time he was boiling hot all the time. I think much of that had to do with the drugs that were being consumed, Bonham was involved with a lot more than just booze according to Richard Cole at least. Floyd and Zeppelin sure did take a beating by the up & coming punks, but they were kind of right. The excesses were beginning to make the cracks more apparent, in many of the big bands of this time.
Ironically punks were just fashionable....and filled with excess while Floyd and Zeppelin changes modern music forever. Early Punk gets way too much credit and of course the press forgets about proto punk ..communication breakdown :) Syd Barrett was more punk than many. Punk sent a very dangerous message to youth, you could suck at playing and be famous. At least our beloved "dinosaurs" had to be virtuosos and studio craftsmen. No wonder they came to be in 1968-1969.
isnt the one singing on 33:37 Jimmy? sounds like it to me
Although it seems this way, Jimmy's vocals could not reach these sounds nevermind the physical shape he was in back then. Bonham provided much more than epic drumming, thus why i believe it's him instead.
People always say that Page is a sloppy player. When it comes to lead playing, that maybe, but he's top notch when it comes to alternate tunings, various jazz and melodic chords and scales, unusual phrasing and rhythms, guitar orchestration.
Yes William, people are too judgemental but miss the responsability he had at these shows. His rhythm work NEVER suffered. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 2 of the series, coming up real soon!

The Rolling Stones cannot be the greatest band in the world for many reasons, beating both The Beatles and Led Zeppelin is hard. Had the Stones not used so many opening acts for the 70s tours...as songwriters, Keith and Mick are untouchable. Live...not sure.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories have you seen them live I just recently seen them they we're very good and too do this at they're age is not capable for most entertainers mick is probably the best showman in rock history as for Zeppelin they were only around about 12 years but page and bonzo were very self destructive and supposedly there was a curse put on them they did have alot of misfortune that's for sure don't know if pages involvement the occult back fired on him makes you wonder plant and bonzo payed the price
The Stones' longevity is one thing. But modern day Mick Jagger is certainly not Plant's ideal as a career. I think the Stones' 1963 to 1981 output is brilliant. The problem lies on what happened afterwards. Even Keith says it on his book, Jagger morphed into a completely different person. Keeping the same thing going with lineup changes is chasing youth at any cost. What Led Zeppelin did as a four piece is very hard to pull off. Very.....hard. Mick played it safe and wanted to be famous, Robert gave everything he had.

I was surprised that he misquoted audio of Robert's from the June 21st, 1977 and he incorrectly thinks John Bonham is singing the verse vocal lines in Bron-Y-Aur Stomp -- when Jimmy Page sang those vocal lines along with Robert in 1977.
I was only able to listen to other parts of it, while I busy with other things. If those basic unforced errors in there are present - I'm sure there are more.
