One of the most underrated and underappreciated albums ever IMHO - not as varied as the others, but they always claimed their albums were a statement of where they were at the moment. Their pent up energy and frustration over recent multiple life issues comes through in the ferocity of the performance. Musically, this may be Bonzo's best album, Plant's slightly edgy but dreamy vocals are superb, Jimmy's "guitar army" comes to fruition and Jones's new Alembic bass tone is ultra-modern and nasty. As always the production is clean, big and powerful. Working title was Power Source, but they switched when Aubrey Powell stated "when I think of them they seem to have a presence about them," which is also what The Obelisk represents and why it's pictured in simple, everyday situations.

I asked “ Are you Jason’s son?” He said “ Yes” We got pictures with him and I had a laminated “ Backstage pass” that was for a drawing to meet Jason and the band. Jager autographed it for me. I told him his grandfather is a legend. That makes him one of the coolest kids ever! I showed him my Icarus tat. He said he liked my Led Zeppelin shirt. Very polite kid. If you ever play near Boston or in any New England State please let me know as I live in New Hampshire about an hour drive from Boston. I did post a much longer comment a few minutes ago but will say it is nice to meet you Jose & also nice to meet you Dave. I am Eric and I am also a guitar player. I just came across your channel yesterday and watched both part 1 & 2 of this starting last evening & watching part 2 over night as I am a night person and always have been. I love the way you even go over Music Theory & add guitar tabs in at times. I also try to learn what mode they are using if I can. I can figure out Modes if they sort of "hit you in the face" Like I know the lead for No Quarter from TSRTS is in Dorian Mode. Jimmy does use the Blues Scale & The Pentatonic as well at times which is usually much easier to figure out. Since I've Been Loving You is in "C Minor" or "C Aeolian" I believe (off the top of my head) that "Nobody's Fault But Mine" is in E Minor/E Aeolian", " Fool In The Rain" is out of C Major/C Ionian, etc... I LOVE the sound/tone of the solo on "Fool In The Rain" I figured out most of it and can sort of improve the few parts I don't know note for note. I use my trusty old Boss OC-2 Octave Pedal and can come very close to getting the same sound. I never get tired of playing it and it is always fun. Thanks again for your videos & I look forward to watching all the others.

April 19, 1977 I was eight years old and I just got off the school bus to see my uncle coming up the hill towards me at a quick pace. My first thought was, oh crap he knows that I have been playing his Queen album!
As he got closer, he said to me what are you doing tonight?
I thought in my head, I am eight years old, nothing. I thought he was going to see if I wanted to go to Ponderosa, a small steakhouse near where we live, which I was always game for to hop in his car, pop in an eight track, and head into town.
He asked me if I wanted to go to a concert that night, and I said sure, we need to ask my mom.
Mom said sure, but hold his hand, embarrassing, but at least I was able to go.
We parked in Covington Kentucky and walked across the bridge and after 20 minutes or so we entered Riverfront Coliseum stage left second level off the floor.
Lights dimmed and The smell of something I’ve never smelled before was throughout the air and for a brief moment, I thought I was going to get in trouble lol, the curtain drops, and I am the presence of the mighty Led Zeppelin my first concert ever!
I had two thoughts that night: the first being that the little fella on guitar with the jumpsuit was really thin. The second: was when I grow up I want to be the guy playing the drums. I was absolutely fascinated.
After a few hours I remember leaving with my ears, ringing, my uncle, talking to me, but not being able to hear, and I realized at that moment that I was never ever going to forget that night.
I’m sorry for the multiple paragraphs and the typos, Gramatik mistakes, I only had a few minutes and wanted to share.

Again another well researched episode also perfectly edited and put together. You have a ingenious way of making the listener feeling of being there.
I think if Robert and Jimmy would had brought JPJ out with them on the Page/Plant tour and explained the recordings it would had been a tremendous conclusion to the legacy. Missed opportunity if you ask me. I think maybe if they did that every fan would have had the closure that many feel left without.
Tea For One an extension of Since I Been Loving You? I'm not sure but it certainly can not be ignored. Presence is so underrated imo, it was like the rebirth of the heavy and deep part of Led Zeppelin. What could have been!

Presence was my first foray into Zep at the age of 16. My older brother had suddenly left home and this among his small but mighty vinyl collection got deep into my head. I had no idea who it was though until I mentioned this to a friend who said: "Man if you like that the check this out" and proceeded to drop the needle on 'Heartbreaker" (II side B), and I was then a lifelong Zep fan and never the same. To this day I love 'Presence' for what I describe as 'ecstatic and exquisite loneliness', best on headphones at 3 am.

Buddy - these videos will live on forever - nothing will ever come close to what you are doing here with the Led Zeppelin legacy. Unless they get erased in a great reset these videos will never die. If you ever feel under appreciate, please remember that. I was 11 or 12 with I fell passionately in love with 'Zeppelin' around the time this record was released. I never looked at any deeper meanings or understood anything other than I loved the music with a deeper understanding thanks to YOU. Thanks to You we all get to enjoy it all over again as you demystify their amazing history. You will be appreciated forever for this great work. At this point I think you are the formost authority on this band, the greatest band that ever was and ever will be. Also, I listend to your record and I think it's amazing. I need to listen to it some more. Anyone who has not heard JCM's original work, please check it out--- and while I'm at it, I always dreamed of never ending Led Zeppeling corporation that produces a never ending troup of performers to bring a live LZ experience to large crowds and emulated the original time as much as possible - using multiple people for each instrument. I know that is a total fantasy but I think it's possible and if anyone is worthy to being the head of production it woulld be YOU.

Jose. I honestly wonder if those in the LZ camp are paying attention to your documentaries and effort. They should! You are a talent. Let me first commend you on two points: First, including Peter Grant in the credits. He is pretty much the "Fifth Zeppelin" & everyone should know how important he is to the success of the band. Second point(s) the soundtrack that you created for this documentary is perfect and really fits into the vibe and zeitgeist of that particular time of Making of Presence. Also I love how you create visuals for each documentary to fit perfectly with each Album documentary. (not an easy task). I have learned that Plant's broken leg was a real catalyst for bad vibes for this album. He is the lyricist and voice of the band. Also it is such a crime that they could not complete lyrics and release one of the most beautiful pieces of music that i have heard from the band: 10 Ribs & All/Carrot Pod Pod. What is next, Jose? I can't wait. Great job!

Hey man, such an honor to read you and feel the good vibes in your comment. I am recovering sort of speak after maniac editing sessions to finish this series haha. I included Peter Grant yes, he WAS the fifth member and i hate when he is not mentioned in mainstream media or retrospective articles. Thanks on the soundtrack feedback, i struggled to find the right piece and motif for the intro but arrived at this one inspired by Achilles and Tea for One. Actually i wanna go back to writing / recording my music, it's pauseda the moment given the success of this Zeppelin project so i will get back to it at some point! The visuals mean a lot that you like them, i take my time to carefully analyze the album cover and find the color palette that works. Next destination you ask? Well...i'll tell you something, i have the 90s, Graffiti and others on my table, need to make up my mind where to go :) We'll see, hope you have a great day brother!

Another great documentary from JCM! Loved hearing that breakdown of ALS on the '77 tour. It was like that one song was a show within a show. Had Zeppelin just played that one song and gone home, the audience still would've felt they got their money's worth from it.

Outstanding Jose, what a fantastic synopsis. Spot on with so much information.1977 showed Jimmy’s almost obsession in leading the band to the edge of oblivion. Being a physic you’d have thought he would have read the runes. But the train had no brakes. As you pointed out it was as though Bonzo & JPJ’s fed his craving, pushing him to eventual collapse. Also assisted by his own recreational habits. During the Earls Court shows, Jimmy lived on Egg Custard, it was all he would allow to feed himself. He believed at the time, to get the best of himself out through his guitar he needed to be in state of extreme exhaustion. I was lucky enough to witness probably one of his finest performances. But in 77 they all paid a heavy price. Fantastic series JCM, your research is impeccable.
PS 1977 was our Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee, many photographs show Robert celebrating the fact wearing a commemoration jacket, it was very important to him, but does not often get a mention.

Your thoroughness is otherworldly at times because they take me to that time in Led Zeppelin’s musical journey as well as glimpses into the wider world that surrounded them. Good Evening Paula! First off, thank you very much for watching these episodes. I still can't believe this started back in August 2022 and how it's taken a life of its own from there. I am honored by your heartfelt comment that speaks of your integrity as a person and music connoisseur, you can sense this by how someone expresses their thoughts via text. I never take positivity for granted thus i always take my time (as much as i can juggling through a lot hehe) to personally reply these messages. I am a fan but i don't put people on pedestals, but understand my musical heroes as humans, as a context, as society in motion. Albums capture so much more than killer riffs, drums, vocals, you name it. It's reflects the world. Working out these scripts is always hard because i see these as movies, a journey. And as a creator you only get one chance to create a good impression nevermind get the viewer involved with the story. So i take this with utmost care and attention to detail, but HUMAN detail, where the magic lies :) I wish you a great week and stay tuned for more, i'm uploading stuff on a regular basis as long as i don't run out of coffee!

Listening to these again and I remembered my best friend and I in high school were completely obsessed with Zeppelin, and we were 15 when Unledded was announced. We were part of a listserv email list dedicated to the band and we would get setlists and reviews of the gigs by members who had just attended a show. I would stay up half the night and wait for one of those emails. Early on that first tour they were pretty adventurous with tossing stuff in the set. So the first night they did Achilles was like aliens had invaded. At the time it meant they were really serious. We had the tape in about a week and a half. 95 was really unpredictable setlist wise, although the second leg we were there the first time they did Over the Hills and I think I left half my brain at that gig. We had spent the whole ride there telling one of our friends they probably wouldn’t do it

Man you really nailed it this time Jose, what an emotional conclusion. Congratulations again, these two episodes on Presence are absolutely stunning. Your musical analysis of Achilles Last Stand during the 77 US tour was off the scale as you deliver such insightful commentary. If they ever release a ‘77 tour video I hope they include a “with JCM commentary” option on the menu. My future listening to ‘77 bootlegs will be revitalised with the fresh perspective and light you have brought to this whole era. I bet your incredibly imaginative “what if” took some hours of very deep thinking; the detail was breathtaking even throwing in the minutiae of “Tea For One” with Jones on keyboards. Anyone like us who enjoy such a deep love and bonding with “Presence” get THAT significance. For me though I’ll stick with a world where they did create Presence but now further enhanced by your skilful narrative. As for those who just don’t get Presence then I shall leave them to it and will always continue to enjoy those precious moments of like mindedness that happen when one badge holder meets another. Thank you so much.

Paul, a friend of mine years ago had called me up and said “ I’ve got a Led Zeppelin live bootleg album you’ve gotta hear! He came over and we put it on the turntable. The cover of the album had Jimmy page on it looking up with a guitar against his chest and clouds around his waist like he was going straight up through the clouds. One song I’ll never forget was called “ Stairway to Gillian” Robert plant says something to the crowd if I remember correctly “ Now is the time of night when all the stuff you’ve drank, all the stuff you smoked, and all the stuff you’ve taken comes together in your minds…” Jimmy started playing the into to “ Stairway to heaven” as Robert was talking. Robert starts singing the theme to Gillian’s island as Jimmy plays “ Stairway to heaven.” The song lyrics go perfect with the music. I was completely blown away! They finish the song and Robert laughs. The audience being British politely clap as the British audiences do. Look it up on TH-cam. There’s several different videos of different groups doing the song but none are Led Zeppelin. The one I’ve seen that I like the most is a guy in clown suit and makeup. I don’t remember his name but it’s creepy and kind of cool at the same time.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Thank you for giving us all an environment in which we can share this stuff. The “What Ifs” could actually be a very fascinating direction. I guess you need to determine if it’s feasible to expand them to full length (20 mins or more) “WhatIfumentaries” or whether you include a “WhatIf” as standard at the end of all future docs in the same way as you did in Presence. Your “What If” was fascinating on two levels; 1) imagining a quite feasible alternative path by removing one event and 2) as someone who has always been obsessed by time travel movies where events might be deliberately or accidentally changed I found that your section here evoked the same spooky atmosphere as events changing in fictional films. Regarding my initial comment about feasibility for presentations of a worthwhile length I suppose a “WhatIfumentary” whose premise was a change to a single factual event like Zep made Presence could return to the point in time where they don’t make it and you keep showing more alternative outcomes leading from that one (non) event. The possibilities are endless! Terry Reid takes up Jimmys offer to be lead vocalist (no Bonzo for starters), they decide that going acoustic for 60% of Zep III is crazy (album delayed while they write and record more electric stuff), The Rover and Houses Of The Holy are included on HOTH which 2 years later weakens the options for padding out PG so they release it without either Kashmir or In My Time Of Dying however the dropped song becomes the song they build the 7th album around ….. as I say, endless possibilities but even more work involved than I’m your real docs I would have thought!

I found your site earlier yesterday & watched both parts of this. I immediately subscribed & have to thank you for an excellent job. I am a guitar player as well with Led Zeppelin & Rush being the first two bands that shaped my style along with Jimi Hendrix & Jeff Beck before the era of Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Steve Morse, etc... I really enjoyed how you mentioned music theory even showing tabs at times while going ever each song. I remember buying my first acoustic as a broke 17 year old (which was an Ovation copy called an "Applause", I have since bought "real" Ovations as well) this before the internet & remember learning DADGAD tuning along with open G, etc.. just so I could play Led Zeppelin acoustic songs such as Black Mountain Side, Kashmir (DADGAD) then open tuning songs(G) such as "That's The Way", "In My Time Of Dying", etc... I remember when guitar tab magazines first came out in the mid to late 1980s qand still have several boxes of them in my collection. I even taught myself the acoustic version of "No Quarter" from the Page/Plant 1995 Unledded release which is in DADGAD and sounds amazing on a 12 string. I even saw that tour in Boston and was blown away because I did see Jimmy Page on "Outrider" tour in 1988 I was too young to see Zeppelin when they were a band. I did see Rush 16 times on 14 different tours though and was always blown away. I also have seen Plant/Krauss 2008 tour and have seen Plant solo with Strange Sensation around 2010. I am "that guy" who usually wins any trivia contest about Led Zeppelin & Rush & still learned a few new things in your videos. I also have a massive collection of Live unreleased recordings better known as "bootlegs" with many being Soundboards. I loved how you sprinkled in the names of several of the Zeppelin bootlegs such as "Listen To This Eddie" "Badge Holders", etc... I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart for your videos and I am looking forward to watching all the other videos you have posted. It is nice to meet you, I am Eric & live in Concord, New Hampshire which is an hour north of Boston.

Eric, so nice to read you! First off, you saw Rush 16 times, that is a BADGE of Honor, WOW. I bet every single time was a ritual, a pilgrimage. Thank you for sharing your memories on the early days of guitars and learning songs, i relate 100%, the mystique of these times never fades. I've played those Ovation guitars, they have a very distinct sound, for me though, i first heard them through Al Di Meola's late 80s, early 90s period. Montreux 1986 and 1993. I am thrilled to know a TRUE FAN like yourself stumbled upon this channel. It has been a project that took a life of its own. I started this with the Making of In Through the Out Door, out of my love for the album, currently owning 43 copies. But form there, i finally found a community of people like me as you said, the ones that know the trivia and LIVE the music. Thank you very much for watching and we'll keep in touch! What is your favorite live period for Led Zeppelin? Curious to know!

      @cygnals524 ปีที่แล้ว

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Hi Jose, Thanks for the pleasant response. It is tough for me to say which live period is my favorite by Led Zeppelin. I honestly love all their tours and have a massive bootleg (ROIO) collection. 1973 & 1975 are amazing, I LOVE the extended 20 - 30 minute versions of "No Quarter" during the 1973 & 1975 Tours. 1977 and the shows they did in 1979/1980 are excellent as well with a few shows with rough spots on the 1977 tour. The early tours were amazing as well. Opening with "We're Gonna Groove" at one point & the epic jams around the songs "Dazed & Confused" along with "White Summer/Black Mountainside"
Yes, every single Rush show was a pilgrimage of sorts. I first saw them in 1982 on the "Signals" tour when I was 16. I have seen them twice on the "Counterparts" Tour & The "Snakes & Arrows" Tour. I have watched them from the early 1980s through to their retirement. I had bought tickets for the "Clockwork Angels" Tour as it was opening night in Manchester, NH about 20 miles from where I live. My seats were about 12 rows back. The day of the show I won FRONT row seats through the local radio station so my Son & I were front row right in front of Alex & by front row I mean nobody was in front of us & it was awesome!! My wife first saw Rush with me in 1986 & has seen them at least 6 times. Both my children saw Rush as their very first concert (November 2002 in Manchester, NH) & each has seen them 6 times as well & Both my kids LOVE Rush!!!! I remember on "Test For Echo" Tour when they dropped having an opening/warm up act and started playing 3 and 1/2 hour shows. I have also read all of Neil's books and own them as part of my personal library. Neil loved my home state of NH and talked about buying property here in the White Mountain area. Before the opening night show I saw front row, Neil Peart & his friend rode their motorcycles down from Canada (like he usually does) and they stopped in the White Mountain area & drove the motorcycles to the top of Mt Washington on the Mt Washington Auto Road. Most of us have driven that at some point including me, but I have also hiked Mt Washington 4 times in the winter month of January!!!!
I am glad to hear "In Through The Outdoor" is one of your favorite LPs by Led Zeppelin. It is one of my favorites as well. If I have to pick a favorite I would probably pick "Houses Of The Holy" with "In Through The Outdoor" tied with it. When I bought my first acoustic I immediately learned 2 songs by Rush first "Making Memories" & "Lessons" & then I learned "Over The Hills & Far Away" , "Tangerine", "Gallow's Pole" & "That's The Way"(Open G Tuning) by Led Zeppelin. I also LOVE the song & solo for "Fool In The Rain" from "In Through The Outdoor" I use an old Boss OC-2 Octave pedal & basically come very close to getting the same sound Page did. I have read Page used an MXR Blue Box pedal to get that sound which is just an Octave pedal & Fuzz pedal combined. I use an Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Fuzz pedal along with my Boss pedal so it sounds very similar. MXR just started making the Blue Box pedals again so at some point I am sure I will get one to add to my always growing OCD collection of foot/effect pedals.
Thanks so much for you videos & the time you put into your channel. I just saw your new video & look forward to you doing your channel full time. I would love to join your Patreon Channel but my finances are horrible at this time. If they start changing for the better I will definitely join & support your work. I haven’t had a chance to understand your background regarding your musical history but I have concluded that you should be a professor of music theory, music history, and music appreciation.
You have a perspective from a point of view that is multidimensional. You explain music the way only few people truly understand. The breaking down of the musical parts, the theory of why, and the meaning behind the song itself.
I have been blessed to also see music in color. Seeing color is another consciousness that only those who truly, truly love the music and appreciate its genius will ever understand.
I absolutely love everything that you have produced, and have labored over and have shared with us, perfect strangers. Thank you again, and God bless..

I hadn't had the time to properly read comments until now and i am honored by your words. I had the fortune of growing up with great music teachers, not many, but quite unique characters, tough and weird as they were, but passionate and committed to arts. My parents are also very thoughtful with their words and perspectives so i would say i am a direct result of it. Now i am always thankful, never take it for granted and TH-cam has allowed me to put my OCD thinking to these projects. Music for me is a manifestation of the surroundings and psychology of its creators, thus is really one of the highest forms of communication and expression. Really, i can't thank you enough for your comment, God Bless you. At this point in my life i am starting to find these musical avenues taking shape towards actually making a living from it after SO many years of putting my heart out there for free. I don't regret it, it taught me and confirm, i am still alive and the inner child still enjoys the PLAY side of things. Welcome to the channel :)

Hi Jose! one more amazing class about my beloved Zeppelin. So many interesting details, and your reviews are always honest. I remember when I was a kid, I asked my dad about the “strange object” on the cover of Presence and he said that nobody really knew. “It must be Jimmy's mystical mind,” people would say. After watching this episode, I listened to the album and felt new emotions. Achilles Last Stand has always been my favorite and I love hearing Nobody's Fault But Mine live because of the “Oh Jimmy” that Plant always delivers on this song…but there's a lot behind great songs. I learned a lot from my uncle who was a sound engineer about the hard work that goes into recording, he met the band at the Tokyo Budokan gigs and wasn't surprised when he heard about Jimmy's increasing involvement with drugs. The pressure is very exhausting and not everyone can handle it, he said. Fortunately Jimmy has exorcised his inner demons. Thanks for this amazing episode my dear Sensei. Looking forward to the next chapter (no pressure…) 😉❤️

Hi, Marcia! I always suspected the 'Oh, Jimmy' is a cue to Page from Plant: 'the harmonica part's over now, it's time for your guitar solo, snowbird.' The cue's still there in 1980.

Jimmy did go through a lot, the level of pressure, i don't think any of us can really understand that in full. No matter our success in life, being the face of a musical generation and the economic expectations to repeat killer albums, it's just too much. We are lucky to have all their discography available for us to listen right? Thank you so much for Watching Marcia! Stay tuned for more!

Stupefying rendition to an album I tend to forget. Now, first thing I did was listen to the whole album (which I olny have as vinyl) very carefully, paying much more attention to drums and bass work. My Zep Spotify playlist had only one Presence song, Tea For One, and now it's got five. It's way more fine work than I've realized before. And thanks to the minute granted to 10 Ribs & All / Carrot Pod Pod, agreeing with my vision that it would become a classic, an anthem from the late Zep carrer.

I don’t understand it. Charlie Jones and Michael Lee had the chops. It didn’t really make a difference live, but tapes made it undeniable. I think they were trying to keep everything balanced with all the dozens of other musicians.

These videos are incredible to say the least. I hope Jimmy at least acknowledges it at some point, maybe even an interview. Jimmy Page does acknowledge Presence.
When the Presence vinyl album package released on 180gm vinyl a few years back there was a 40 minute You Tube video.
      Unfortunately it's been removed.
Jimmy Page constantly refers to Presence as the 'Munich album.' Page discusses the trials and tribulations of making Presence.
Yes . . .he played until his fingers either seized up, OR blew, from massively long guitar sessions
E g. Walk into the studio at 7 pm and play until 7 am the next day.
Page talks about the individual songs and how the topics were quite serious. He does highlight For Your Life and its lyrics.
Like the Rolling Stones, Pagey mentioned the fact that Presence had to be recorded, produced and mixed in three different countries to avoid paying huge taxes. Jimmy infers about the situation in h8s home country of the UK where they could only spend a small ludicrous period of time OR lose a whopping 90 per cent on taxes. He talked about the mansion he & Robert rented that was almost washed away.
      Fender Stratocaster
Jimmy confirmed that he used the Stratocaster on Presence.
Again, Pagey confirmed that the Stratocaster he played at Knebworth was given to him by Joe Walsh from The Eagles.
      Virtuoso Guitarist
I couldn't believe it. Whilst he didn't call him by name, he mentioned the Stratocaster player at that time who had left Purple to create another band that surprised him and returned to a much 'harder guitar sound" obviously meaning Ritchie Blackmore!
Still on the virtuoso theme, Page said that Presence was 'heavy guitar orientated meaning' there was lots of guitar as opposed to 'hard rock.'
