  • Finally a V2 of the long awaited Driver Unity Remake!

    Even it is still buggy in many ways i decided to now upload a second Prototype.
    There is indeed much more planned but not sure what will come in the next build.
    This version has a Controls.txt so you know the basic controls.
    Also there is an About.txt that contains the following:
    New Stuff:
    -An option to disable the "flash/blink" in the main menu because it can be a little annoying if you navigate the menus in the dark
    -An option to set a max count for traffic spawned cars (max 200 what will lag if if increased to even just 50-100)
    -SFX and Music test volume option in main menu/pause menu
    -Improvements to the main menu selection movement
    -Traffic lights (prototype)
    -Exiting and entering cars
    -Car select (some cars and selection images are still missing)
    -Multiplayer and traffic spawn for second player (Beta)
    -Weather select (Rain, Thunder and Snow)
    -Trees for a few more maps (mainly Miami, Desert and some in San Francisco)
    -Different Vehicle light function (still weird rendered but better as it was before)
    -Few fixes, improvements to the paths in Miami
    -Helicopters (not working in multiplayer for Player 2)
    -San Francisco Trams
    -Vehicle Shadow (weird rendered sometimes)
    -UI scaling fixed (UI will now work even with 4K resolution)
    -And more
    Known bugs:
    -Enabling certain cheats will break car exit (will be looked into in later versions)
    -Helicopters do not have input functions for the second player so they may only be used by player 1 in multiplayer
    -Some Miami paths are not yet connected in some areas
    -Selecting vehicles that do not exist will instead select the Miami Cop as a placeholder (what prevents the game from breaking)
    -Menu selection may not show up sometimes in some menus (move back to first selection to make it appear again)
    -San Francisco Trees have the wrong tree shadow (trees are simply just a test in this version)
    -If Thunder is selected, it will take some time for lighting to match the actual brightness (since it is a test prototype function)
    -Only one Audio listener can hear sound by default in Unity (so only one vehicle will be heard if played Multiplayer)
    -Night rain sky texture has a darker texture and other sky textures are not yet implemented
    -I allowed most of the vehicles to be spawned as traffic (this also includes untextured vehicles)
    -Most of the DRIVER 2 maps are simply not finished or have missing map regions (will be fixed someday)
    -Night versions of DRIVER 2's maps are not yet added
    -Multiplayer will break if Player 2 exists and enters any car since this is not fully implemented yet (driving around will work)
    -Traffic chasing AI is now a little dumber because of the changed vehicle Prefabs (This will indeed be fixed someday)
    -There is this bug if you exit/enter many cars that the exit camera get's stuck (if this won't go away, a game restart is needed)
    -Lens flares for cars are a little too big yet and may not render as they should (because it is a test)
    -Camera positions for many vehicles are also misplaced in this version
    -Maps may still be a little too big especially for DRIVER 2 maps
    -Vehicles often loose their path (mainly bigger vehicles)
    -Possibly a lot more
    Copyright and other stuff:
    This Remake uses a "simplified version" of Saarg's "Arcade Car Physics" (free version).
    I do not own any of the models and textures used in this Remake.
    If interested some may mess with the scripts inside this build but please do not use any of the scripts or parts of it for your own projects even if i make this Project for free (especially if you try to make paid games).
    Who knows if i ever make another Project or game using the same scripts as i used here.
    This project will always be a free side project and i do not want any money for anything i make for it. (what would be not legal also)
    This also means, any updates made can take a long time since i do not work always on the Project.
    This project is mainly also used so i learn to understand how to do stuff in Unity.
    No idea if the Project itself will ever be released (At the time this build was uploaded) since it takes a long time adding and fixing all the stuff.
    More stuff is indeed planned but it is unknown what the next version will contain.
    Lets see when V3 will come since i recently mostly worked on V2 and it is a lot of work.
    It sure will take some time, but I'm sure i will add even more.
    Well, if you compare V1 with V2, there is a lot more added and more to do.
    So that means V3 will have a lot more for sure.

    For Chicago, Havana, Vegas and Rio city select you can use the replay mission menu's portraits.

      I might use them.
      More interesting is on how to get the Sky textures for the first Driver and the sounds from Driver 2.
      I tried it with the Open Driver Tools but i found no way to get the sky textures.
      I might get the sky textures with umod but then, the palettes may not be 100% correct from what i know.

      No idea if and what links are blocked by TH-cam's comment detection and i don't really have discord anymore (having too many accounts is a bit annoying with all that phone activation stuff) and i don't use any other sites really.
      One possible way would be over Steam.
      It's easy to find me there if one's looking at the Steam Workshop for the game Viscera Cleanup Detail.
      I have sent stuff to others using Steam and there were no problems so far.

    I remember the engine (sound) goes higher in rpm in the PS1 original.

    Just realized if you pause the game, the pause menu does not render. Simply just press up once and enter to see the second menu.
    Edit: Just patched the not rendering Paused menu (UI height for paused text was simply to small)

      Sfx is a huge mess. You can hear the ringing of broken glass and helicopters sounds like the car

      @@Takeitlightly6Maybe because it is only a Prototype and, therefore, still a Work in Progress? Have you seen a prototype as perfect as a final released game? He's the only one working on it and imo it's better than having a dead game that no one care about

    You should try to add improvements that the original didn’t have, like mesh deformation, other PS1 games like Felony 11-79, which had full model deformation way before GTA IV did it. Options like that should be optional too so you still have the option to play the game faithfully to what it was

    hi, this conversion is very well done. can you add an option to display rpm and speed (mph/kmh) in the hud like in other projects? using internal view and driving in the night, the "white texture" in front of the car car which simulates lights car it's really very annoying. thank you

      Not sure of an android port also because of how multiplayer works.
      I wish i would know how to add some sort of local multiplayer that is played with multiple systems but i need to understand how that all works.

      ​@@4KANTI wonder what the feasibility of porting to the PS3? As I understand it there was some homebrew made for PS3 in Unity. I think this would be amazing to see ported to PS3/4/5 eventually. I mean it deserves to be on those systems too considering how widespread and easy to run homebrew is at least on PS3 everybody has possibility to run HEN at least, so with 80 million systems produced it would easily be accessible to a huge number of people.
      I am hopeful we at least get Driver 2 ported to Sega Dreamcast eventually, since we never got GTA 3 there this game would be amazing on it especially with mods. Not talking this Unity remake, but the actual ReDriver2.

      Uhm.. there should be a .txt file named "Controls" or something next to the game's .exe that tells you how to look up or down.
      Vehicle entering triggers are often placed a little lower, that's why entering without looking down doesn't work.
      I saw your video and thought you might have forgotten to see for the controls file i added.
      Maybe i need to add mouse look back as an optional control function so people have it easier to navigate around.
      I liked mouse look more before (i used an extremly basic player controller) but than changed the players movement to more like the one original Driver 2 has.
      So that might be one thing i need to add to the options menu.
      Look movement might be a little buggy sometimes also.
      Taken from Controls.txt
      ON FOOT:
      WASD = WALK / ROTATE
      Q = LOOK UP
      E = LOOK DOWN
      F = ENTER / EXIT CAR
      LEFTSHIFT = RUN
      So just look a little down to the door's trigger and you should be able to enter most cars.
      (Few pickup trucks may have their door triggers misplaced to the back/center of the vehicle i remember)

    After trying the demo, the bones are there. But the car physics don't feel right. Cars seem to not be as bouncy as they were in the original. Also that tail happy feeling is not there. The cars do not want to seem to want to swing out in hard corners. However the whole project is very well put together and it feels very close to the original. Keep up the good work.

      Well, not actually 100% since Unity has a complete different physics system alone and what i use as base scripts for the vehicles is also really simple and basic so i can understand everything much easier.
      There is still a lot to be improved but it is indeed much better as it was in V.

      This was planned before i even added the second player fully.
      Turns out there must be a lot stuff changed to make this work actually.
      If i ever make more players, i first have to fully make the second player work + i have to add some sort of keybind system in the options menu so people can bind keys to different controllers.
      Technically even more players would be possible but doing that is a real challenge.
      (It would be interesting if 8 people play on a large 8K screen or multiple screens)

      The maps can be exported with Open Driver Tools what can be found here:
      github.com/OpenDriver2/OpenDriver2Tools
      There is a link to appveyor but those builds disappear after months so the latest build may be only found somewhere else (like the Driver Madness discord)

      @@4KANT I manage to load the models of the Desert, but the C# Scripts are not working, i'm stuck on how to make the models organize and make the map.

      I just exported the map as a model and didn't use the scripts since they did not work for me also.
      It looks like the scripts may be used with an older version with Unity but i did not test that by myself + you may get a dozen single gameobjects what may cause lag but not sure about that.

      Vehicles are exited (if standing) and entered using the "F" key. Also there is a Controls.txt file next to the Game's exe that tells all the inputs.@@zerotwo5430

      All vehicles have the same speed and handling because it would take a lot more time tweaking it for every single vehicle.
      Of course it is possible but if i add new vehicles again it may cause problems later so all vehicles are for now kept with the same speed.
      Editing all vehicles properties sure takes time because of how many there are and i had to waste a lot of hours because every time i add something new to one vehicle, i have to do the same for all the other ones too + having to check later that everything works for every single vehicle takes a little extra time.
      The handling may not be really good too, not only the speed (well i at least managed to make the vehicles actually controllable without flipping them on each turn what also makes cars hard to flip over entirely).
      So this needs a lot more work done than just speed adjustments.
