Russia have tried Sweden's defenses several times.
Just last week, a SU-24 flew 5km in over Gotland but was chased away by two JAS39.
The U137 sub incident on the 27th of October 1981 (lasted until November 5th 1981) was a so called "faulty navigation" however, that is easily contradicted since they managed to evade several obstacles without any problems (navigating that far into the Swedish archipelago isn't easy and demand skill, the only "faulty navigation here was the last 10-20 meters before they beached). The reason they even tried was to pickup a Spetznaz group that had been spying in a new anti-submarine weapon (Torped 42) exercises that was took place outside to the Swedish Naval base in Karlskrona. I was down there myself, doing SIGINT so we got aware that if Swedish Special Forces tried to take the sub by force, the crew were ordered to blow it up. We another friend of mine from the Swedish Military Research institute, was that they had four nuclear torpedoes with a yield comparable to 3 Nagasaki nukes. According to the political officer onboard (he wrote a book about the incident), the nuke's were armed and would have detonated if Sweden tried to take the sub. I have attached a link to the incident description from the Swedish Navel defense forces. It is in Swedish but should be easy enough to translate:
    Thanks for your good work

Sweden and Finland joined NATO because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, not the other way around.

    • @AltCutTV
      @AltCutTV หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Need to check with article 42.2 of the EU. Talk and preparation preceded the invasion, not actually joining anything. If that was the case Russia sure is taking its sweet time getting back into Finland.
Semi-attached to that, Finland have also been in NATO Light (PFP) since early nineties. Right about when USSR caved. Which was probably sensible, since there is usually no more uncertain time than the power vacuum of a former one party system.
Another thing not mentioned in the video is that Finland too had pretty much the same former neutrality and mainly defensive build-up as Sweden. The only difference is more cooperation with NATO in general, and US in particular. They are not exactly buying the very planes that would have been perfectly suited to Finnish infrastructure almost as well as the Swedish after all. ;)
Makes one wonder for how long Sweden will be able to maintain the SAAB planes as part of it all though..

The JAS Gripen is considered a 4th generation fighter jet, but it can perform all military aviation duties depending on loadout. The acronym "JAS" stands for "Jakt", "Attack" and "Spaning" in Swedish, which translated to English would be roughly "Fighter/Interceptor", "Striker/Bomber" and "Reconnaissence".

    • @TemalCageman
      @TemalCageman หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Gripen C, E are both regarded more advanced than 4:th generation though... but not full 5:th generation. Many experts call it a 4.5 Gen, especially the E/F variant since it is a completely new fighterjet compared to previous variants. Looks the same but is bigger, new engine, two more hardpoints and probably has the most advanced EW suite in the world.

There is no NATO membership payment.
The membership doesnt cost anything in that regard.
What there is is an obligation to invest in your own military forces and your civilian and military infrastructure.
As a member you agree to spend at least 2% of your GDP on your military forces and to make sure that your infrastructure is up to date and integrated with the rest of the alliance to be able to facillitate the logistics needed in the case of a war.
    No more, no less
As for NATOs expansion eastward, NATO was pretty passive. What happened was that when the wall came down a lot of former USSR members and satelite states came banging at the door in fear of what Russia might do in the future. They had had russian tanks in the streets in the past and didnt want to have them back in the future.
And Russia eventually proved them right. First in Georgia in 2008 and then in Ukraine in 2014

The Russians are listening closely. But they wouldn't start invading Portugal or Luxembourg, they'd start at their own borders, but every country bordering Russia is spending way more than 2% already. And yes, we came banging at the door because we KNEW that the shit happening now in Ukraine would also happen to us if we didn't.

Realistically speaking, we don't need it nor want it back. Getting Karelia back is not even on our radar, because whatever prosperity the region once had under Finnish rule, the Soviets and Russians have managed to squander it all. Have you seen what Viipuri looks like? The place looks like it's stuck in time, buildings are dilapidated and run down, streets full of potholes and all the infrastructure is crumbling. The whole region would need billions of € poured into it to restore it to the level of the rest of the country. We simply can't afford that.
And then remains the question of what to do with all the hundreds of thousands of ethnic Russians in the area since there are hardly any Karelians or Ingrians left that could be easily integrated into our society. Getting Karelia back is an unwanted burden.

Sweden hasn't declared or been declared war in 200years, but Sweden has taken part in most major conflicts like Congo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, Libya, Mali, Persia, amongst others in the 20'th century. Saying they haven't fought in 200y is very wrong... the last war upon the nation was against Norway in 1814 though.
And that we 'should prepare for war' is exaggerated, would be more correct to say 'the public should be prepared _for the eventuallity_ of war", something that makes perfect sense with the world as it is these days. They're not saying we should buy guns or join the army, just to be prepared at home with food, water, supplies in case it does happen... and yes - it's totally because of Putin after they announced on russian state tv how they would conquer Gotland from Sweden - I think it was on the same eve as they invaded Ukraine.

  • @magnus_lundgren
    @magnus_lundgren หลายเดือนก่อน +32

No, the 2% is not a membership fee to NATO. It is how much each member is recommended to invest in their own military.
"NATO expansion" is the excuse, not the reason of Russia's invasion. Counties applies to become members, if they want, and all of the current members have to accept the application. Having a current land dispute, as Ukraine had since 2014 made them not able to become members even if they and all the current member wanted it. So the "expansion" was already a non-issue. That talk about NATO expansionism is on flat-earther level.
As mentioned in a former post, the 1981 incident was not just a sub in Swedish water, but one that ran aground deep inside. The Soviet Union sent a "rescue fleet" and it was minutes from it leading to a shootout between the Soviet Union and Sweden. When they noticed Sweden wouldn't just fold, they didn't cross the sea border and diplomacy resumed, leading to Sweden releasing the sub back to the Soviets.
The Baltic states were a weak point of NATO before Finland and Sweden joined. If Russia would take Gotland, they would be able to control the Baltic and the rest of NATO would have had a hard time helping the Baltic states.
Putin have more than once expressed a want to regain what once was part of the Russian empire, and besides Ukraine and the Baltic states, also included Finland.
Any land winnings made by Russia in a peace settlement will be a signal they can expand. So any compromise, unless wanting further wars with Russia or other similar countries makes unfortunately to only possible compromise if Russia should have to pay any reparations or not after they are kicked out of Ukraine.

The JAS fighter jet is developed to be an exelent engine to combat Russian aircrafts, anti air defenses and so on. It has even von against US aircrafts in RedFlag military exercise. One time the JAS won with a 10-0 score. Ones one single JAS "took down" 5 us aircrafts. And then we got the Swedish submarine that "sank" US biggest aircraft carrier over and over again. Thus, Ukraine had already been its own independent country for 3 years when the agreement was written. Otherwise, I agree with you on everything :)

Russia is practically blocked from the Baltic sea. Their only two ports are St Petersburg, at the far end of the Gulf of Finland, and Kaliningrad both surrounded by NATO countries. There is also a choke point between Denmark and Sweden to get out to the Atlantic.
The reason Russia may go for Sweden first is the island of Gotland which is smack in the middle of the Baltic sea and can control any naval activity coming in our out of the Baltic.
    Since Russia has practically

Well, in theory, if they wanted to invade us, they either have to go through Finland (and that never ends well), or close the Suwalki gap really fast in order to attack from Kaliningrad. Of course the propagandists in their state tv talks more or less every day about nuking Berlin, Warsaw, London, Stockholm and that national park in the US. But the likelyhood of a conflict, as of now, is pretty low. But it´s also important to remember that our friends in the Baltics are right, if we fail to stand up for Ukraine and for democracy, they will go further in order to restore that old Russian empire.

All you need to know about J39's is that in NATO's military simulations over Alaska a couple of years ago, a single J39 with Meteor missiles kept taking out 5 American F16's with latest upgrades in simulated realistic scenarios in both beyond visual range fighting and in dogfighting. Over and over again, it wasn't taken out once despite being in a 1 vs 5. Now the F16 isn't the best plane out there, but it's still proof of how good the J39 is to be able to dominate in a 1 vs 5 scenario, as that's what it would have to do against much more numerous fighter jets from Russia.

The reason Russia would invade Sweden is that our location and ownership of the majority of the Baltic Sea means that we have one of the best positions for invading Europe. If Russia invaded Sweden, it would have direct access by water to Denmark, Norway, Finland, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany etc. The Swedish military has been talking about this for years (if you want to find a more direct source for it). An estimation from a couple of years ago estimated that Russia would be able to overtake Sweden in 14 hours, since we have one of the smallest populations in Europe (10.5 million people so the equivalent of the population of Moscow) but we're the fifth largest country in Europe by landmass. It's also been made increasingly clear that other countries (especially the US) wouldn't help with boots on the ground, which would be needed if they invaded, so when they invaded Ukraine we decided to give up our neutrality to protect ourselves and everyone else.
I mean don't get it twisted, we would've whooped them for as long as possible, but technically speaking they have enough people (and are a communist country that can call in their people to battle whether the people want it or not), that with patience (and their tendency to be willing to sacrifice their population like sheep for slaughter) they could've just erased our population from the face of the planet. Sounds a bit dramatic, but you know what I mean.

And the thing you mentioned about the wing tips, thats where they put modular EW pods. And the gripens EW(electronic warfare) suite is among the best in the world.
Also, the reason contries are scared of russia attacking IS just because of the reason they have nukes, since they can just scare people around with the nuke card and then start attacking while holding that over the country all the time.

12:40 pretty much nothing is corect at this point. The expansion of the airfocrce and nuclear weapons program happened at the same time.
The swedish program went a head at pretty good speed since we at that time had spies in usa. Uk and ussr nuclear weapons program. So we could pretty much just build one... well when the plutonium was ready. That took a few years.
Sweden also made a variable yeald bomb prior to usa. If the bomb was ever assebled or not is debated. But we know it was made. There is some speculatlation that it was even tested as a low yeald device in a cave.
That speculation was consideted impossible untill many years later when test from other countries show that devices with a so low yeald was actually possible.
13:45 that is also not really true. The D model lack a few system, for example the auto cannon.
Sweden have no gripen F, only brasil have gripen F. Swedish airforce thought it was not needed since they alreddy jad a bunch of gripen D.

As for now, all NATO country has told Ukraine "Do not use our weapon in Russia!" Except for two countries! Sweden has approved "if you need to strike in Russia for victory, you may do it with our weapons". Do not remember exacly with other country that gave them approve for it, but i think UK

The main reason Sweden and Finland joined NATO is because their defence was based on that attacking them was not worth the cost, but that was also true for Ukraine. That is why the invasion changed everything.

The reason Sweden didn't get involved in ww2 was because we gave all our gun to Finland in their civil war to support them, and when ww2 really started we didn't have any guns to defend them self, there for we didn't fight. So Sweden started to use diplomatics to save peoples lives instead of guns :)

As a Swedish Military Guy, I can tell u. So in 2023 They annopunced that we are close to war and that we shouldn´t worry so much because its very slim that we get in war. Our jets are very good on Air To Air due to oyr Famous "DOrito" Jets 🤣 and because ofour highly trained Soldiers due to the Military Army being very tiny. They higherd the income for payment so that more people would join the Army, Im aiming to become a soldier yes because i think its very fun and i grew up with Military stuff. Well we also ahve very good boats, Jets, Tanks Especially due to Finland and Denmark and Norway. We joined nato due to the war that might arrive. I hope i explained good for yall. Ill respond if you guys ahve questions. (No im not a soldier)

Important: "what are the changes of a war breaking out?" at 15:14 in. Here is the answer: very, very low IF you are clearly stronger than the agressor. If you are weak, the chances are very, very high. The price of freedom is more than just vigilance alone.

What Russia primarily wants in Sweden is maritime dominance over the Baltic Sea and Sweden's islands. Russia has a very large military presence in Kallinigrad, it is mainly from here that they threaten Sweden.
When it comes to the Swedish defense, our equipment is much better than the Russians', but Putin has more of everything.
When it comes to Estonia, the USA would start a nuclear war over Estonia, no, hardly, both Estonia and Russia know this.
One reason Swedes are so for Ukraine is because we know that if Russia succeeds in Ukraine, he will start to look to other countries, Russia has already started to question the maritime borders in the Baltic Sea and wanted to expand its territory.
Even before NATO, Sweden and Finland had military cooperation. A little simplified, you can say that Sweden would put more focus on aviation and naval defense, while Finland would put more focus on infantry.
When it comes to Ukraine, you have a bit of a fault or a very Putin way of looking at why they were attacked. There had been many more attacks before on many countries if they had not been part of NATO, if they were not, like Belarus, i.e. a vassal state of Russia. None of the countries in Eastern Europe would probably have been able to become Western countries if they had not joined NATO.

Here’s why eastern Europe is preparing to face Russia:
Nuclear deterrence only works if you assume it doesn’t work at all.
It’s a pretty inflexable last resort policy, and should only be used when a country is completely unwilling to budge, while not caring about the consequences.
Basically, if you’re not preparing to win an actual conventional war, the opposing side might decide you’re simply posturing with your nukes, and decide to Blitzkreig you into submission before you actually use those nukes, or something along those lines.
Basically, eastern Europe is doubting the effectiveness of the deterrence for keeping it safe, as Putin might decide that the west is too disunified for NATO to actually stand a chance of actually defending the Baltics in the long term.
It doesn’t actually matter whether or not such a hypothetical Putin is correct, as he only needs to think that he’s right to launch us into a world war.
I honestly don’t think either side is willing to start off using its nukes either, as that is a major escelation of hostilities. However, such a conflict might inevitably end up escelating into a nuclear exchange unless someone is willing to budge.
Eastern Europe is currently very unwilling to budge, as it would mean other countries to walk all over the west in the future, thinking us (the collective west) weaklings unwilling to protect our own freedom.

I worked for an electrical company in Sweden for a couple of years and when Russia invaded Ukraine we were all on high alert. Atleast the security department and so on, between all the companies. Everything got more secretive because if Russia finds out where our electricity is supplied from they can attempt to destroy the locations and ruin a lot in the whole country. Also all electrical companies in Sweden had (probably still has) many attempts of cyber attacks from Russia.

Swedens fighter pilots were also training more extremely during the cold war than any other countries, the death rate of fighter pilots was high as hell during training missions. This was because they were flying very close to the sea surface and the treelines to be able to avoid enemy raydars and do surprice strikes, now I think it´s a bit more humane but many women lost their husbands in regular exercises, sad but true. Sweden accepted a few percent losses of planes and pilots to get the worlds absolute top airforce (the real Top Gun :).

I skimmed through the comments, so I might have missed one already explained this.
    time for a history lesson.
current Finland was once a part of Sweden. which is why some parts of Finland mainly speak Swedish. a bit like Canada with the French and English.
but the during the war in the early 1800s, they invaded it (and even parts of Sweden).
after WW1 Finland was created as a new country.
during WW2 there were Swedish airmen flying aircraft squadrons trying to fight off the Russians to help them.
after WW2 the Scandinavian countries have tried to help each other. Sweden even had one of the most numeral air force in the world not counting the big ones (US, UK, France, Russia(
Norway and Denmark joined NATO to get some protection, but Finland and Sweden stayed neutral because of political reasons.
with the current things happening things changed and the majority of both of our countries knew we had to change

JAS 39 Gripen is such a stunning plane, and one working very well! I'm Swedish and live fairly close to the air base where the JAS 39 Gripen pilots are trained, always amazing hearing them fly over at times, or seeing them perform at air shows (I love air shows!)
We have had good relations with NATO for a long time with a lot of joint exercises with NATO, so even before we joined NATO, we were kinda halfway in. As a Swede I felt it was only natural for us to join NATO, especially with all our neighbors being members, and we have a lot we can contribute to NATO just like NATO can and does help us. The Russian invasion of Ukraine just made the step into NATO happen I guess.

17:59 we have a joke in Sweden that goes: “we will be able to defend ourselves if the invading country sends one troop at a time” but I think that even if NATO abandoned us we would still be able to hold our lines for a while but that is MY guess
