Anyone else completely captivated by Lewis and Clark? I seriously have an addiction.
Just saw Wm Clark’s signature at Pompeys Pillar a week ago.
l@gregoryvschmidt that's so cool
Right here!
There's something so noble and heroic about this music.
Easily the best documentary I have ever viewed. And it is unlikely that I will ever come across anything quite as brilliant as this one.
This is great when heading on a road trip.
Some years ago I found this CD in a thrift shop for $1.00 and its given me so much enjoyment ever since. The music is so beautiful.
Ken Burns' musical selections in his films are brilliant.
I hum this melody to my baby daughter at night whenever she cries. It always makes her stop. :-)
They picked the perfect theme music for that Lewis & Clark documentary!
Listening to this just replays my childhood... my dad is a history teacher and this is his favorite documentary. When I'd watch it as a kid I didn't appreciate the beauty of the film. We rewatched it recently and it's honestly one of the nest films I've ever seen
@@justahistorydork2974 somehow I missed seeing this documentary until last summer & I'm a big fan of Ken Burns' documentaries. Highly underrated and a gem of a film. The soundtrack was as much of the experience as the images and narration
love this track, it really transports you back to a different time in our nations history. it also speaks to the adventurer/explorer/traveller in us
This melody, titled “Beech Spring” was later used for a church hymn “Come Ye Sinners. The tune dates back to the mid 18th century. It was published in a shape note hymnal called The Sacred Harp. Here are the lyrics.
Come, ye sinners, poor and needy,
Weak and wounded, sick and sore,
Jesus ready stands to save you,
Full of pity, love and pow’r.
He is able, He is able,
He is willing, doubt no more,
He is able, He is able,
He is willing, doubt no more.
Let not conscience make you linger,
Nor of fitness fondly dream,
All the fitness He requireth
Is to feel your need of Him.
This He gives you, this He gives you,
’Tis the Spirit’s rising beam,
This He gives you, this He gives you,
’Tis the Spirit’s rising beam.
Agonizing in the garden,
Lo! your Master prostrate lies;
On the bloody tree behold Him,
Hear Him cry before He dies;
“It is finished! It is finished”
Sinners will this not suffice?
“It is finished! It is finished”
Sinners will this not suffice?
Lo! th’incarnate God ascended,
Pleads the merit of His blood;
Venture to Him, venture wholly,
Let no other trust intrude.
None but Jesus, none but Jesus,
Can do helpless sinners good,
None but Jesus, none but Jesus,
Can do helpless sinners good.
This article explains its history and posts the lyrics. Quoted below from

The verses of this hymn about repentance were written by English author, hymn writer and Calvinist minister Joseph Hart (1712-1768).
It was first published in his book "Hymns Composed on Various Subjects" (1759), where it was paired with a refrain by an anonymous author, which is believed to come from American oral tradition. (ref) This refrain is given below.
With meter of 87 87, tunes that it has been set to include:
ARISE by Phillip P Bliss (1839 - 1876)
RESTORATION from The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, by William Walker (1835)
BEACH SPRING by (possibly collected by) Benjamin F. White, 1844 (published in Sacred Harp) - with a different refrain, which is attributed to Hart (ref).
My Pastor’s wife used to sing this and if I remember correctly the instruments used were a guitar and penny whistle. Absolutely moving and beautiful! She knocked it out of the ball park!
Ironically, it wasn't published until 1809... after Lewis and Clark. It's somewhat of a major inaccuracy in this movie.
Beautiful song. The lyrics calling sinners to repentance and redemption in the arms of a loving savior go right to the heart and purpose of Christianity.
I also noticed a song called "lord, whose love in humble service"
Also the tune to the hymns "There's a Wideness in God's Mercy". It was the processional hymn for my mother's funeral two days ago.
Whether hiking, kayaking, or just plain walking I hum this to my heart content....makes me work harder as they did on the long journey to the Columbia and back...Thanks for the upload!!
I'm in 9th grade (high school) i watched this in 8th grade (middle school) and somehow I get nostalgia
Such a beautiful tune. Perfect for Lewis and Clark
Thank You for putting this one up on here. Like everyone is saying....it transports you to another life, in another place, and into a different time.
This is definitely on my "songs to reminisce and cry to" playlist
I've waited forever for someone to upload this.
+Duke Skellington Same here! And so I decided to do it myself. Thanks for stopping by :)
You should upload Simple Majesty, also from Ken Burn's Corps of Discovery.
Where did you find it?

Do you know where I can find more music like this?
I would like to thank Mr. Sod this is REAL music.

This piece is so beautiful. It totally changed my life. This Ken Burns documentary came out when i was in 2nd grade. I was so captured by this melody and I was so excited by it. when I think about songs so beautiful that they changed my life, I think about this song. When I was in high school my string orchestra played a version of it. And that got me so excited, I just love this melody so much. I would look at hymnals and I figured out what a hymnal meant, I figured out what 8.7 8.7 meant, I figured out what the capital letters of names like BETHANY and BEACH SPRING meant.
This is the song that got me into singing sacred harp. I had no idea what sacred harp meant. I read the wikipedia article for sacred harp multiple times until I figured out what sacred harp was and then i started doing sacred harp and singing sacred harp. And every time I do it, I lead a song, and i lead beach spring. So yea Beach Spring for life.
I used to look up Beach Spring on youtube and the only results would be "Sping Break Myrtle Beach" or something.
I just think, wow, this is a melody that keeps you wondering. When I was 7 and I first watched the Corps of discovery on PBS, I tried to learn this song and i wished to ask someone what that song was so I could listen to it always.
I couldn't even find this song anywhere. that is why I started doing Sacred Harp.
YESSSS official Thanksgiving music of my family for many years
Thank you so much for uploading this. I've watch the Burns L and C countless time and this music projects such a unique and feeling. Funny how the two main songs in this doc. can have such an impact on a person. Thanks again.
I do not know why but after I listened to this track, I feel peaceful
I watched the documentary for this Lewis and Clark and I love it !! I love the songs
And it remind me of their amazing journey!! Thanks u
I love this!!! Makes me close my eyes and smile!!!
the music score for this was amazing
Got the movie where they came out of the river in Oregon! It was awesome!
it still amazes me that after all they went through, they only lost ONE man, to a burst appendix.
And even if was in the care of the finest doctor of the day, Dr. Benjamin Rush, He still would have parished, for there was nothing that could have been done to save him.
I would have loved to go on the expedition. They had the best time out of almost everyone who went west.
@@DanDDirges just shows how tough and resilient they were and how the kindness of strangers was so important. Plus having Saquagewea and her baby, in the essentially majority of the voyage, was in stating to the Indian Tribes that this was not a war party.
Tears flowed when listening to this music.
Hauntingly beautiful
Thank you for posting this! I love the music from this extraordinary documentary of Lewis and Clark! I'd love to get my own copy! :)
The song isn't just a historical artifact. It also touches the religious movements and revivals of Lewis and Clark's time.
Outstanding choice.
This takes me back to Honors American History in 9th grade in September of 2018
April the 8th, 1804
Honored Parents. I am now on an expidition to the westward, with Capt Lewis and Capt. Clark, who are appointed by the President of the United States, to go on an expidition through the interior parts of North America. We are to ascend the Missouri River with a boat as far as it is navigable and then go by land, to the western ocean if nothing prevents. This place is on the Mississippi River oppisite to the mouth of the Missouri River, this has been our winter quarters. We expect to be gone 18 months or two years. and if we make Great Discoveries as we expect, the United States, has promised to make us Great Rewards. For fear of accidents I wish to inform you that I left 200 Dollars in cash, and if I should not live to return my heirs can get that and all the pay Due me from the U. S. Government. I will write next winter if I have a chance. Yours, John Ordway
Great! I took four summers to trace every foot of the Corps of Discovery. Greatest trip,of my life...
American prose!
Never thought matthew brodrick would be good in a documentary but here we are
And no, expidition is not misspelled. That's how it was spelled in his journal so that's how it's written here.
This makes me want to traverse the uncharted landscape of the vast American west
love it
This is on my mixtape
I just want to give a quick thanks to Mrs. Cooper, who is an amazing Social studies and English teacher.
This song reminds me of her class
Use me as a “this is stuck in my head button”
The tempo is 87 BPM, in case anyone wants to know
"On a warm afternoon in April..."
Hi Mr. Weber
Good luck finding this song anywhere to stream. Beautiful tho not on pandora or prime music
songs from the rest of the series (quote unquote)
It's crazy. The COE stepped off the plane of known civilization. At that time, it was like an astronaut landing on Mars. The kicker, L&E found life, however bizarre, and helped the local living life forms. At Mars, good luck brah.
So was this song only made for the documentary on Lewis and Clark?
I remember hearing this in 8th grade US history in the documentary. Honestly it really sets the scene, and Lewis and Clark are still one of my favorite history topics
It's a 19th century tune.
where did you find this? anymore
Believe it or not, there are 2 more versions of this music in the film. There is Beech Spring (We Proceed On) and Beech Spring (The Beginning of the End), all of which had the same theme but different instruments. They were all available on youtube two years ago, but have since been taken down due to copyright issues. Anyone ever heard it?
I've found this one again, (The Corps of Discovery), and I am yet to discover the other two once more.
Why, after doing some digging through my library I've found them! I just posted them on my channel, check em out when you can.
@@MyWickedSmile how would one go about getting permission to use this video you have posted in a pandemic online worship service for a small (
@@rev.judithmarchhardie8781 Hi Reverend, my understanding is that as long as it is not for commercial purposes you should be able to use the music with by giving credits.
Where did you get the soundtrack
When you and the boys reach the Pacific Ocean.

Yea man i agree
Bro me too
Yeah
Agreeable
Bro i agree too
A Christian hymn played in a mix of Native American and bluegrass style. Contact of cultures. Too bad the white man killed the friendship.
