      Absolutely true... Princess Alice of Battenberg, Phillips Mother was getting more and more profoundly deaf and any "defect" was seen as a blotch on the family... As her Husband Prince Andrew pointed out to her daily.
      I do think Phillips Mother had a Psychotic episode ... Probably brought on by the disdain that Prince Andrew treated her... Flaunting a his mistress's and squandering any money they had and the fact they were homeless...& stateless...& that she was expected to approach HER family for support ... However; the treatment she endured...mostly because her own Mother had her committed, is shocking.

    This of course, is tragic....but I lost my eldest brother when I was six - he was fourteen. The only remark I would agree with the late Philip is that you do, "have to get on with it"....there seems to be some (deliberate) distinction between Royal families & commoners, but fundamentally, it matters not who you are - tragedy may visit anyone, at anytime. Both in Philip's case, & mine own (& millions of others), there was no psychotherapy or support network for the bereaved, & to a certain extent, whilst the loss of any relative is horrendous, I consider in today's climate, there is too much emphasis laid upon such loss - unfortunately, you cannot bring those loved ones back - you can acknowledge their death & (inexorably) move forward; life is for the living after all.
    Stay safe, everyone :)

    • @hotoneinspai
      @hotoneinspai 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The Royal family certainly dont make a distinction between ( as you called it) Commoners and Royalty far from it... If other do...its not the fault of the Royal Family.

    • @andrewtongue7084
      @andrewtongue7084 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is because they can afford to (not) make such - but if you read my comment carefully, P S Newey, I did not state that they were the ones making same - that is your (incorrect) assumption. Monarchies are not self-appointed (unless you wish to invoke the 'Act Of Settlement' - which is how the Windsors acceded to the throne); rather, they arrive at succession by lineage, & that runs into the territory of False Paternity - or philandering with those ex parte to the Royal Family - proper.

    I saw a video last year detailing the relationship of Charlie's older deceased cousin William who was involved with a Jewish divorced woman 8 years older than him in the 70's. Prince William is named after him. Naturally the palace nay nayed the pairing(surprise, surprise right?!). Sadly, William was killed in a plane crash at an air show. There is footage, very chilling! He was an avid pilot. I think he died in the late 70's or early 80's. He was only in his 30's. His ex never married I believe, and still mourns him. There are a couple of documentaries about them on YT.

      @@chooseyourpoison5105 - possibly, but if it was already born, what was the rush? If she was in labor, they would have been in a hurry to get her to a hospital. And it's rare that labor is short. It usually takes hours and hours and in those times, sometimes days

    • @chooseyourpoison5105
      @chooseyourpoison5105 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@benjalucian1515 There are several reasons - the baby may have been in distress, it may have been premature, or the mother may have been bleeding out. Even today if you give birth in the back of an ambulance the paramedics still take you straight to hospital. It is also quite possible that labour was short, as it was her fourth child. Nor does labour necessarily take hours and hours, any midwife can tell you stories of babies born in mere minutes. Even Princess Alexandra's first baby was born after only two pushes and had to be delivered by a lady in waiting into a flannel petticoat.

    It was expected that German aristocrats, the rich and well connected, would be members of the new National Socialist party. Everybody was involved. Hitler was an animated and forceful speaker telling the nation that he had the answers to the county's financial and social problems (stemming from WW1). He and his inner circle made it look like they were improving things and that's why so many followed them. Philip was never involved with the Nazis and personally dispised them.

  • @bobwitkowski6410
    @bobwitkowski6410 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    So Prince Philip was a member of the Hohenzollern Dynasty. Ceseli was the granddaughter of Kaiser Wilhelm 2 of Germany that makes Prince Philip the Grandson of Kaiser Wilhelm 2 who was the Grandson of Queen Victoria.

    • @ihnc1
      @ihnc1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      NO, Prince Philip was a member of the Hesse family, not Hohenzollern. Philip's maternal grandmother and Kaiser Wilhelm II were first cousins. That makes Philip and his sister Cecile first cousins twice removed to the Kaiser.

    • @michaelverbakel7632
      @michaelverbakel7632 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also Princess Cecilie who was killed in the plane crash was the sister of Prince Philip and they were both grandchildren of Princess Victoria of Hesse, the oldest child of Princess Alice of Hesse and by Rhine, who was Queen Victoria's second daughter. Princess Alice also had one son who lived to adulthood Prince Louis of Hesse and by Rhine so Louis and Princess Victoria were brother and sister. Louis's son George happened to be the husband of Princess Cecilie, Prince Philip's sister when they were both killed in the plane crash. So through Princess Cecilie, Prince Philip's sister, their grandmother Princess Victoria of Hesse and her brother Prince Louis they both shared the same grandchildren. Prince Louis himself died one year later after the plane crash. I guess he was heartbroken himself because he lost his wife and son in the crash. I know this comment may be a little complicated but I also love how intertwined these royal relationships can be. So the new King Charles III of England and his son Prince William are direct descendants of Princess Alice, Queen Victoria's second daughter.

    OK well...I know this story as I know the Geddes family well.
    Princes Cecily ( in English) was NOT going to the wedding... Not because Phillip was due to visit... But because...she was too pregnant. Prince Phillip had no role in anything to do with what happened.
    Royal Woman that advanced ( and at that time ) did not go out much in Public...and certainly not to weddings.
    Plus she hated, hated flying... She always thought she would die in a plane accident...Ironic or what!
    The family new her fears... Her husband however... was the kind of man who bullied people into doing things they didn't want to do...He did this with everyone not just his wife... Face your Fears.
    George Donatus was the thrill seeker... Plus their youngest child was not well and this was another reason Cecily didn't want to travel But George explained there were two nannies at home and because the little girl had a fever... Cecily was not be allowed near her anyway...
    So to keep her Husband happy she got on the plane. She agreed to fly to London and attend the evening event... She took with her a very special Tiara...in its lead lined box. The Tiara was the only thing to survive the crash... it didn't burn.
    The newly Married Prince Ludwig and his wife Margaret ... Formally adopted the youngest child of George and Cecily but further tragedy came when around 8 years of age...she too died.
    I think it was meningitis ( not sure) Prince Ludwig and Margaret never had any children of their own .

      You don't know the story well enough, obviously, because Johanna only died in 1939. She never made it to 8 years old. She died less than two years after the plane crash. She wasn't even three years old when she died. Yes, Margaret Geddes and Prince Ludwig/Louis were the ones who adopted her.

Nor did he have to endure constant press harassment. As for emulating Philip, Harry fought in a war same as his grandfather did. In fact, he's done many things Philip never did, such as setting up the Sentebale charity and organising the Invictus Games, and walking to the South Pole. I suggest Philip should have learned from Harry.

    • @auChevalierRed
      @auChevalierRed 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Correct me if I'm wrong but while her husband joined, I don't think Sophie did. Besides, she was only 16 when she got married to him and he had started despising the nazis long before his death, having joined the party early only for he was offered a job in the ministry for airforce reserves and needed to adhere to the party, condition sine qua none for the German aristocracy at the time since Hitler did not trust the aristocracy for they had described him as a dangerous bouffon. Many have done the same without even knowing what the ideology was all about to protect their business and staff. It was a simple case of the party replacing everything including trade-unions, so you had to adhere to it for state jobs. You were not asked to support the ideology, just to pay the adhesion fees. A way of 1) raising funds for the government and 2) to ensure that members would then be tainted for members of the opposition, which would limit the likelihood of them being approached by the resistance.
      The other sister was a different matter all together, as she actively campaigned for the nazi party around the world with her husband. But did she have a choice, I wonder, considering that her husband and all his family had happily joined the nazi party and the Greek royal family was viewed with suspicion by the nazis after the war had started? She had young children, did she want to take the risk of them being hurt or taken from her and raised by the nazis?
      Cecilie and her husband joined it in May 1937 before anything had happened and mainly for she was under threat as a member of the Greek royal family. She died in November that same year. Who knows what she would have done, once the war had started or if she had heard of any crime carried out by the nazis?
