CrossCode: Criminally Underrated Masterpiece

  • CrossCode is one of those gems that you come across that simply takes your breath away. Very rarely have I been quite so charmed by a game, even rarer have I wanted to play it a second time around. CrossCode does both with ease and yet the game remains virtually unknown in the wider sphere of gaming. Hopefully one the day the immense effort the team at RadicalFishGames put in will be recognised.

      Man, there's more than a few of us who seem to rate both Crosscode and XC2 super highly. I think it's one of things where it's like - it's easy to bounce off these games if you're expecting a simple casual JRPG, but if you put some investment into things, what you get out is some of the best experiences that games have to offer.

To this day it's still one of my favourite games ever, and one I always keep going back and replaying over and over again. The characters, the story, the world, the gameplay- it's all just so perfect, and I haven't found a game like it since.

      I first found out about it sometime in the early 2010s because they posted a demo on Newgrounds when flash was still around. CrossCode is one of my favorite games of all time.
    One thing about it that really stands out to me, is how it nailed the feel of playing an MMO, with lots of little details like players sitting around in hard-to-reach areas, that lady that really likes sitting on tables, the occasional random roleplayer, and people who live worlds apart (potentially literally in this case) connecting over how their study group is the worst.
    Each time I’ve played through it I’ve felt nostalgic, reminiscing about the time I spent playing MMOs 10 to 15 years ago. And it’s wonderful.

    I knew i'd love the game when i found a newgrounds demo up years ago (back when it was still looking for funding, but i had nothing to support with) that is still up and running today as a great before you buy test. Because it was such early days, it ended up falling off my radar for a while, but after being reminded it exists, now as a full product on the switch, i bought it instantly. No regrets on the purchase, even if i can see a few flaws with hindsight (mostly how the story is divided up and the focus given to each part not meshing too well with repeat playthroughs, or with expectations from the demo which showed only the "prologue", though the mechanics overcome any shortcomings of the narrative.)
    It is even such a gem that i watch reviews just to recapture that spark of discovery, vicariously enjoying the attention and love it gets from new eyes.
    For comparison's sake, the demo has the entire game up through the first route (ending a screen or 2 before the first duel) with some minor changes. Most notably, all of beginner's bridge, the main town, and the inclusion of party members is cut, but there are some smaller changes too. No "players" running through areas to make the game feel alive, and any existing sidequest NPC being found somewhere within the play space because of the cut town.

      P.S thanks for watching the video :p

    I absolutely adore this game and wish more people played it, but I DO admit it has some problems (cough, platforming is a bit hard for me). From what I can tell about Project Terra, it looks so much better, mainly bc it's actually 3d instead of isometric, helping with depth, but the environments and animations are just perfect. Very excited for it!

    • @maynardburger
      @maynardburger ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a perfect game by any means, but no game is. Crosscode still swings for the fences on many fronts but still manages to hit it out the park in enough of them to make up for the parts where it doesn't. And hitting any area out the park is hard enough for most game developers, much less doing it in so many areas like Crosscode does. It's a huge accomplishment.

    • @mapron1
      @mapron1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've a lot of complaints about platforming and puzzles but that FOR ME were two easiest part. I don't remember any hard puzzle, they all about execution, logic is always pretty simple. Portal/talos principle has magnitude harder puzzle sequences. And in CC you almost always see solution immediately.
      I spent 99% of my time struggling with fights and especially boss fights. (like beating mid-boss if Fajro took me 3 DAYS!)

  • @mapron1
    @mapron1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    It's interesting how I had opposite experience than you. Puzzles in the game for me was very easy, you figure out what to do after 5 seconds in the room. It's execution that matters. And couple rooms have overtuned timings, room at 6-14 is bonkers, yeah. They are exceptional. But fights and BOSS fights - that's where I spent 99% of my time, hitting my head at the wall. I hate fights, I hate bosses, I choose Sergey Hax for my every playthrough just to 'skip' fights (well except final boss)

      yeah, Lea's amnesia is a plot point and part of the mystery of the early game, so "found in the code" is a spoiler, but it is so briefly mentioned that you almost have to be looking for it to get spoiled. On the other hand, it is not the biggest spoiler out there, as it does not take too much effort to piece together considering who is the very first character we see; there is an obvious connection between the 2, and the player can easily assume "found in the code" is something along the lines of finding an old, retired avatar to replace a missing one, potentially even being the reason for amnesia. In other words, it is a spoiler that only leans into fan theories that are created just by experiencing the game for the first time. It does not spoil evotars by itself, it just says there is more to the character than it first appears.
