When the Moon Hatched or A Fate Inked in Blood where my surprises for the year

I’m so glad I’m not alone in thinking Crescent City is way below par for Sarah J Maas. I was seriously disappointed in it 😅

Alone With You in the Ether was my most surprising book. It was my first Olivie Blake (I’m behind, I know). After hearing people not like some of her other stuff, I was worried, but I ended up giving it 4 stars and it helped get me out of a slump.

I love seeing what your fur babies are doing in the background during your sit-down videos XD My biggest surprise this year is technically romance as a whole, but started with Honey & Spice by Bolu Babalola. I'm birom-Ace and usually I avoid the romance genre because there's too much smut that does nothing for me. But I read that one on KU, and absolutely fell in love with it, kicking my feet and everything, and then from there found a few more books (Ashley Poston's two novels [before this latest release], Delilah Green Doesn't Care..) that I loved.

I've had many pleasant surprises this year, but if I have to pick one I'd say The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas. I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did. 🥰

I read Fourth Wing and loved it, despite not being a fantasy/romantasy fan

Immortal Longings By Chloe Gong and The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent - I was shocked on how much I loved these two books! I wasn't expecting that

I’ve actually had quite a few surprises which has definitely made my year of reading quite interesting, but the one I’m going with is How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu. That book, yo, is a wild ride. I had very little information going in, and had never read from the author before so can’t say if this story is typical of their style…which I don’t even know how to define. I rated this 4/5 but it is seriously the strangest book I’ve ever read. The narration was great on audio, story compelling, but it is quite grim. Maybe even the darkest of any post apocalyptic tale I’ve taken on. I have no idea who’d I’d recommend this to, or if I would. It seriously is just a dark, odd collection of world ending [and new beginnings] stories across both space and time.

I am surprised that Babel wasn't one of your most surprising books. You were so shocked at how much you enjoyed it because of how much you didn't want to read it haha! I will say that Empire of the Damned has a slightly different feel to it. I am going to start the Nevernight series soon because I am so obsessed with his writing. Awesome video as always 😊✨

The Book Of Life is fab! I’m currently rereading Time’s Convert, #4 before I read The Blackbird Oracle, #5!!! I love it MUCH more than I did the first time I read it! And to answer your question of the most surprising book of 2024 so far, I gave 2! ACOSF because I really didn’t think I’d like Nesta AT ALL, and Barbarian Lover because it was perfect, and I thought that Barbarian Alien was perfect!

I agree with other commentors, love the dog and love your reviews. Floating hotel by Grace Curtis surprised me the most, I loved it.

The book that surprised me the most, was definitely Half a Soul. I did not expect to love the romance between Dora and Elias so much, that I was able to ignore the illogical whimsical villain.

My biggest surprise so far this year was probably The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina by Zoraida Cordova. I was expecting it to be a YA fantasy/magical realism novel that I just listen to halfheartedly to get it off my TBR but it was actually an amazing adult magical realism story that even made me tear up a few times.

My most surprising book is definitely The Unspoken Name by A. K. Larkwood. I read it years ago when it came out and liked it well enough but didn't love it. But I did own it so I gave it another try to see if I wanted to read the sequel, and it ended up being five stars upon reread. That was a really nice surprise.

I feel the same about A House of Flame & Shadow - so upset at how bad it was. The book that surprised me the most so far was The Lost Future of Pepperharrow. I love anything by Natasha Pulley but was not expecting to love this one as much as I did because I’d read the first book so long ago

The best book to film adaptation I have seen is def Red White and Royal Blue. Truth is I don't watch tv or movies a lot anymore. And most adaptations these days are terrible.

Perhaps because it was a recent read but I was pleasantly surprised reading Clare Sager's Beneath Black Sails series. I had previously read the first 2 books of her most recent series, Shadows of the Tenebris Court and whilst I enjoyed them, (enough to read her again), I did not like them as much as Beneath Black Sails, and I did not think I would enjoy a pirate themed story so much. It does have Fae though ☺
