am i the only one who loves the crowded bookshelves? I dont think they need to breathe, i love that they're kinda messy and overflowing :D

I agree. I love seeing my shelves filled with up-right standing books, especially if there's multiple series in a row that are completed or just a full shelf of oneshot books.
As someone with crouwded shelves... yeah, I like the crowded shelves! I think its pretty to have trinkets and such, but at the end of the day, my bookshelves are for books so they usually get ousted to make space for more stories.
I adore bookshelves entirely packed with neatly ordered, spine-out books. Not messy or with vertical piles or trinkets in the way or anything like that, just "basic" rows of books with their spines all lined up neatly, filling every shelf.

I think you’re seeing a lot of “apartment white” walls. In America you can’t paint your walls in apartments and they are almost always a vanilla white, and in medium light they can look a little greenish.
Even if you repaint them before you leave ?

@@Aisuzuni Yeah, it think it's sad. You really can underestimate how much making a space your own can rely on how you customize the walls.
You beat me to it - yes, I think the lighting in the photos just make them look a different shade but I assume all those walls are just variations on white. Painted walls in many places is the privilege of homeowners.
I personally LOVE an overstuffed bookshelf, probably because I've always dreamt of living in an old library or a used bookstore. 🤓❤ I find the fullness of it cozy and inviting.
Whoever is bookshelf number five that was described as chaotic I’m so envious of you! It’s the clutter I strive for, a great ratio of trinkets and books. Love how there is random room at the end of the shelves to stuff what you want.

You never have to get rid of books! Books don't need to breathe, they need to be read! I love every bookshelf that has books, whether half-filled or overflowing.
as a swede i recognize the first white shelf as a Hemnes bookshelf, and not a Billy bookshelf. ikea brainrot
And i’m pretty sure the second shelf(ves) are actually billy bookshelves but in the oak coloration
I organize by genre but that always looks like I've organized by color. Romance is normally pink/red/pastels. Horror/Thriller is normally black. Historical fiction is black and yellow.
Instead of buying new bookshelves, especially if you have the Billy ones, you could also resort to round the edges with black colored wood or maybe crochet something to alter the form. There are lots of ways to alter them in a way that makes them more personalized and not as common! Added bonus: you wouldn't need to pay half a liver for new shelves.
Yes!! I removed the back from mine and put them in front a coloured wall. It looks amazing and not at all ikea-y!
for sure! I also took the backs off mine and I'm considering painting them to look more like wood but that's a bit more of a labour intensive project haha
Not the Billy bookshelf slander! I actually like them because I feel like they make books stand out more, while brown shelves kind of blend in with the books.

also: I dont get not liking white shelves? mine are white and pink, fits with my soft girly room better than dark colors ever would.
I moved recently and got dark wooden bookshelves (also Billy just not white) and my old white Billy got a mid life career change and is now a kitchen shelf.
your current bookshelves resemble mine. the white bookshelves with books shoved everywhere bc lack of space. + random trinkets scattered about.
coming to say as someone who has painted my walls that light greenish colour i do lowkey regret it, it feels very cold, so id recommend getting it slightly darker and very warm toned

The white Billy bookcases are outdated?? They're my dream bookcases for when I move into a house where I can have a library hahahah
I just bought a white bookshelf from target and thought it was adorable 😭 I got into reading (book collecting if we’re being honest) two years ago and had no idea those shelves were outdated. Time to thrift new ones and give the new ones to my brother it seems😂
Edit: I will be keeping my shelves I was just being silly!! I just respect Leonie’s opinions so I was making a joke!
If you love your white shelves I don't think you should give them away, It doesn't matter if it's seen as outdated or not, if you love it then you love it and that's great! But also if you do want new ones, good for you (and your brother who will get them xD)!

Dated, in or out of style, cool, not cool - those are subjective and totally irrelevant to what you should love. If you love it, it's adorable, it's perfect, it's right for you. And remember, whatever is "in style" now will someday be OUT of style. Just think of yourself as ahead of the game, when white bookshelves are back in. Or better yet, don't give a crap about what other people think and love what you love. To quote Pee-Wee Herman - "I'm a rebel Dottie!"

I don't have a bookshelf and I'm an e-reader. I have a couple of books in my cabinet. I may not have a sense of aesthetics, but I only care about the content of my books anyway :D
I can't wait to watch the decorating vlogs, you had such good inputs, I literally noted down almost everything, the salt tealight lamps, the mushroom battery powered lamps, the fake potions. Love all of it!!
I have to say, I'm living for your outro - the song, the ghibli (?) picture, it creates such a lovely atmosphere. Just know that at the end of every video I'm sitting there, doing a little dance and singing along to the melody :)
my book shelf aesthetic rn is I ran out of space and I can't get another bookshelf so I'm just going to organize best on how it fits in the space. You can tell because I have a regency romance series sitting on top of my Nancy drew books because that is how it fit on the books shelf. oh yes and random trinkets everywhere. I also have a shelving unit that was in my closet that just has all my shadowhunter books on them. it used to be organized alphabetically when I had space

A good topic Leonie for discussion. Sometimes a bookshelf describes the person's personality & overall exposure to different topics even if they don't know how to read a book😀. The same is applicable for game & movie collection. The last time I made a proper book shelf was during my school years. Now I have a small bookshelf for design books & catalogues since I am a designer.
This was so much fun, thank you. It actually gives me ideas for how to decorate a new bookshelf once I reorganize my room.
Mine are very judge-worthy. Thanks to not having much room, very chaotic.
Giving more space to books is a good tip in theory, but you also need the space for more shelves in your place

I have a passion for books, I love them so much. Always been a loner in my life, books are my best friends...they are a voice that reaches out to me like a familiar colleague from the past. They don't judge, they don't criticize, they just share their ideas and they are there whenever i want. I know it makes me look a bit like a loser, but honestly my bookshelves are my biggest pride in the home...i dust them and maintain them regularly...people say i don't have friends but i disagree...i am surrounded by friends!!

"If you have the money to buy special editions, you have the money to buy another shelf." - Money, maybe. Space to put another shelf? That's a different story altogether. We don't all live in huge houses.
Sometimes it's not about buying a new shelf, it's more about letting some books go. Because I sure have the money to buy another shelf, but I dont have the space to put it at, AND I do not have the money to live in a bigger flat. I love the concept of this video tho.

I decided not to share mine since I had put a lot of my history books into books, leaving this massive gap on the one shelf, which were subsequently filled halfway with textbooks and some of my classics.
But my shelf was made by my dad and I a few years back. I have my CD collection on it. My books are generally split by author, it may look like a scatterbrain went loose but there's a method to my madness

You had good advice and you weren't terribly judgy. Good on you. What I got most from your narrative is how subjective bookshelf style can be. I'm the opposite of "let them breath" - I look at bookshelves that aren't primarily all books and think of all that wasted space! I wonder if they really read or if they just like to use books as decor. Admittedly, my shelves are too full, literally overflowing onto the ground, but I still prefer the aesthetics of a bookshelf that's 80-90% books.

So I did a fun thing when reorganising my bookshelves this year, I put all my to read books on 2 shelves (lmao help) and chose the shelves that are like at the right height for me to grab. So the middle of my bookshelf has been changing quite a lot but I love it, it’s so handy. I’ve also got a section for books that I have read this year so I can see my progress and can sort through which ones I want to keep at the end of the year ✌️

Psychoanalyzing a person's bookcase/book displays! Yes! Have you ever seen a bookshelf with a fish tank on it? Or a hamster's enclosure? There's gotta be someone whose pet fish or hamster or rat or chinchilla or guinea pig shares real estate with books.
My bottom shelf is a graveyard of duplicate books, broken ones, old college stuff and boxes
I can't wait for the day I can have an actual book shelf, my books are all crammed and stuffed into random places all over my room just wherever they'll fit :')
I have very little space so i have placed my books in the part of my wardrobe that has a hole in it. That way i can access the books from two sides and use the full depth of the shelf. On one side are the cooking and study and music books, on the otherside the "pleasure reads". The other side is also faced towards a window and sofa. The little space i have also dictates that i need to sort my books by height so that i can place more books in the same space because somewhere they have to hold residence.

I have hoarding in my family, and I have the gene, so I dont own any books for my mental health. Minimalism was rough at first, but honestly, I feel so much happier in my place now.
I am an avid library book and Kindle reader now. I love all the bookshelves people have. It's fun to see even if I dont have one for myself.

Fun video! And a lot of inspiration for my own bookshelves. First up - get rid of my DVDs and BlueRays. I haven't watched a single one in 5+ years. Then my books can BREATHE. I love the idea of some pretty lights to warm up the area. And plants.

I’m doing a complete clean up on my bookshelf. Meaning selling lots of books that I don’t want to keep. And also since I’m a mood reader , I want to have several books on each genre. Than just 1 or 3. That way I less likely to go in a reading slump. I like to have a variety of everything. Right I have too much one of genre and not much else.
