  • No other equine breed in America starts 17-18 month old “BABY HORSES” under saddle, AND then rides them with large STACK SHOES with CHAINS which HIT often SORED sensitive skin above their front hooves to see if the “BABIES” will perform the “Big Lick” gait. The black mare - "The Queen Of The South" with Trainer BOYZ Clay Sanderson, up for Shane Porterfield, owner, is 23 months old.
To their credit, Southerners under the banner “WE, The People” - Citizens Campaign Agaisnt “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty have protested this “animal abuse, and have now reduced it down to where it is holed on private proeprty at the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration at Shelbyville (Bedford County) Tennessee.
And local people are silently BOYCOTTING the “Big Lick” horse shows.
Native Tennesseean MTSU Horse Science Professor equine vet Dr. John Haffner says the "Big Lick" is Animal Cruelty - "a pain induced gait - a business built on the suffering and pain of horses".
Please support the grassroots “WE, The People” - Citizens Campaign Against “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty to END this abject horror to BABY HORSES by Donating (whatever you can afford).

Sadly my horse has struggled with hind end lameness due to a training accident as a baby. He had a rough and too-early start as a saddle horse, but didn’t endure a fraction of this torture.
That said, I unfortunately know exactly what it looks like, and all of these poor horses have it.
My Morgan is now serviceably sound after two years of vet bills and worry, but will require maintenance for the rest of his career, which could end early.
If a tough saddleseat start did that to him, I can’t imagine what happens to these poor horses.

@@mentallyinsane445literally the way they move IN the class is suggestive of it, although the deliberate front-end lameness that produces the gait would make a flexion test virtually impossible.
If you look at visible strain on the SI, stifles (frequently quivering), and hocks it’s not hard to imagine what you’d see on film

@@BenderTheGreenCheek Look at retired 20+ year olds. Way more sound than your average retired jumper. Its in their conformation to have an overstride no matter the shoeing class

    • @BenderTheGreenCheek
      @BenderTheGreenCheek 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@mentallyinsane445whatever you need to tell yourself I guess. At least you’re putting some thought into it which is more than most big lick supporters.
I’m speaking from experience of someone with a Morgan that has a natural overstride, can slip into running walk, and was started as a 2-yo saddleseat horse
His start was later and more gentle than these horses get, and at 11 he has hind end lameness that needs maintenance.
Watching my baby hurt is unbearable bc I see him as an animal not a machine. He’s the sort that troops through until he’s in agony, so after 20+ years in horses Ive recently learned a new skill set I past few years. Which is aided by knowledge and technology we didn’t have 20 years ago.
I’ve learned to watch for pain face and subtle signs of lameness. I see that in all big lick horses, and I hurt with them when I see it.
Yes, the modern jumping world is horrible to horses. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
A “normal person” dressage barn wo directly imported European warmbloods and Andalusians/PRE is a great place to rehab any lame horse. They get warmblood eventers that can do dressage but not show jumping and/or cross country, and OTTBs. I’ve seen the horrors bc that’s where I brought my Morgan to rehab the injuries he sustained as a baby saddleseat horse.
Saddleseat and gaited horses would be much better off if we went to plates. No stacks and of course no soring. It would be a shock of course, but in a decade it’s what we’d see as normal, and then we’d reward natural talent and not what people are willing to do to win. It’s all relative after all.
But - write all the rules you want. Until you LOSE for an artificially enhanced gait, people will find ways to do it, and it’s likely they’d be even worse for horse welfare than what we do currently.
As it is, I’ve got a naturally talented Morgan gelding that doesn’t show thanks to the covid-conomy.
With plates in front and barefoot in back, he sails along at a level trot, and if he were “shoed up” and worked with action devices he’d be competitive at a regional level
I pulled his show shoes for soundness reasons and so he could do turnout.
People in my barn said I was crazy to give it up, and admittedly it was a letdown at first.
But 4 years in, I love how he works, and he’s the same rocket ship I bought only happier. Riding him is a blast.
If we had a way to enforce that way of doing things universally (we probably won’t) horse welfare would improve, as would the breeds, because we’d be rewarding natural ability. :)

It's amazing these supports think the horses have dirt on their pasterns when it's actually chemicals. They even think Big Lick and Padded Performance are two different disciplines. Nope. Not different. Instead of calling it Big Lick, they call it Padded Performance for it sounds nicer. And let's mention that there are those who don't go to this but will put these stacks on their horses to get them to step high even though they don't put chemicals on them. Even with those who only just put the stacks on the horses' front hooves with no chemicals, it's still abusive. They're not the breeds of equines that have a high stepping gait. End this discipline forever.

The ‘winning’ horse was in pain, too much weight on his poor hind quarters caused by his front being higher because of the stacks, a rider sitting purposefully to increase the weight behind, causing a higher leg action and high head carriage in an attempt to evade the pain from the barbaric bit. What a disgraceful, wicked, evil practice, ‘the big lick’ and soring. It’s time it stopped.

Watch the riders at the reverse. A lot of them will reach down and get a finger under the curb chain under the chin to dig it out of the flesh. This renews the blood flow so the area won't go numb and the horse can still feel the bite of the bit.
