  • SEPTA, being the primary transit operator in the City of Philadelphia, is also the sole operator of the trolley and light rail lines in Philadelphia and its suburbs. Routes 10, 11, 13, 34, and 36 operate as street-running streetcar lines west of 40th Street and underground light rail subways east of 40th Street. Route 15 exclusively operates as a streetcar line for its entire length, and of course routes 101 and 102 operate as individual light rail lines with a private right of way for most of the length of their respective routes.
    All Philadelphia area trolleys/light rail lines accept onboard fare payments and are $2.50 per ride. For the most part, the fleet consists of Kawasaki LRVs, with St Louis PCC cars operating on route 15. Just watch the video

    Imagine if they didn’t close all those trolley lines in the 80’s and 90’s. Philadelphia would have one of the largest tram networks in the world!

      SEPTA should bring back Route 23 route 56 and the route 6 back as trolley lines

      @@mrrobot5963 Toronto’s is by far the best in North America. However, if SEPTA’s network looked the way it did in 1980 it would be giving Toronto a run for its money 😉

      Well according to there philly 2045 plan they plan to either bring back or build new light rail lines in north and south philly as well as the Delaware waterfront and I think upgrades to existing g lines too

    I was very glad to see that the # 10 line and the # 15 line were included in your video. I was starting to feel some kind of way. These were the lines in the part of the city that I grew up in but are never recognized in videos.

    0:08 Those are my stops! Two Stops.
    I did not want to miss another trolley after the trolley arriving late "in every time". Okay, in the 1st trolley I rode and saw the other one. Then, I pulled the string hard. And I "slapped and slapped" the window softly many times at the same time I wanted to scream, but with no voice only, "STOP! STOP! STOP! STOOOOOOP!!!!!"
    However, I thanked a trolley driver beeped many times for me. That the same he knew what my ride IS. The reason: that trolley was my last ride.

    I take the #11 from Darby on occasion. Trolleys are by far my favorite SEPTA vehicle 😏

    Ah man I love the PCCs. Sucks they've been pulled from the 15, but they should be coming back soon, and they're all refurbished

      The trolley lines shut down and wont be any trolleys until the end of 2021

    Philly erred in dismantling trolley lines for buses. Does the 23 trolley still exist? I know the 53 trolley line does not.

      Shut down in 1992 with the 56 and 15 trolleys. SEPTA restored the 15 after the city got up on their rear ends to get them to put it back. They also got SEPTA to repair a section of 23 tracks in 2009 because they want the trolleys back as much as the people do.

      The PTC sold out to National City Lines back in the 1950s. They converted about two dozen lines to buses and abandoned others. Their "bus good, rail bad" mindset hung around through the end of the PTC and infected SEPTA for over 4 decades.

      @@jayo1212 The tunnels were the only thing that prevented Philly from becoming bus-only. Even NCL couldn't figure out how get a bus to run in narrow tunnels without adequate ventilation for fumes, hah!
      The suburban lines did come perilously close to being turned into BRT. Two were long gone before SEPTA: West Chester was taken in 1954 by the PA Dept. of Highways so they could widen WC Pike, and Ardmore was sacrificed in 1966 because even the once-mighty Red Arrow was in such bad shape they couldn't come up with $500K to buy 3 secondhand replacement cars.
      When the remaining Brill cars started to fail in the 1980s SEPTA gave serious consideration to paving over the Media-Sharon Hill lines. That was soon followed by actually suspending service on the P&W after one of the Strafford cars suffered a fatal crash.
      What saved them ironically was federal intervention. The story I heard from a guy who worked for the Suburban Division was that when the feds saw SEPTA's BRT plans they pointedly noted that several big infrastructure grants included strict clawback provisions. As he described it, if SEPTA didn't maintain rail service for a specified number of years they'd be on the hook for every cent in those grants. And the rails stayed.

    Imagine SEPTA had 200 Kawasaki trolleys instead of 112 septa would have kept a lot of trolley lines if the bought 200 but we all know things cost money a lot of money it would have been cool if they had a a lot of money to buy 200 Kawasaki trolleys

    There are no more trolley cars like the old presidents series that were painted green running in the city on a regular basis. The 15 trolley which is what was in your video has its last stop or it turnaround station two blocks away from my house in Port Richmond, they spent millions of dollars putting tracks in plus getting those cars updated only to run them for 2 years. The tracks on Richmond street are being replaced because they are rebuilding the whole area down by the new part of 95 but septa changed the route so the 15 stops at the casino and then turns around to go back to west Philadelphia. They also said they will be phasing out the old cars totally and going back to buses ( what a
    shame) maybe they will change their minds but in Southwest Philadelphia and underground in center city they still use those newer Japanese built Kawasaki’s but they are more like a light rail car as the green presidential series cars are what I consider a Philadelphia trolley!

      It is a shame, I think they're trying to repair them right now, but that might be old information. both the PCC cars and the Kawasaki cars are being phased out, and I sincerely hope they don't replace them with some kind of street hugging caterpillar tram. It wouldn't fit very well with city infrastructure, and It would just be a pain in the butt for SEPTA to make everyone suffer while trying to build right-of-ways. The PCC's are over 80 years old, and the Kawasaki cars aren't that new anymore, being pretty much 40 years old right now, AND running on a permit since they aren't ADA compliant (Funnily enough, the PCC's are ADA compliant since they got rebuilt in 2003-5). SEPTA needs to get their act together. (and hopefully repair those PCC's for the 15, they're a Heritage route, right!?).

      @@wolfythewolf4457 I believe so along with the line that runs in Germantown or it used to have a trolley that ran thru parts of Germantown and most of chestnut hill but for some reason I can’t remember for sure so this could all be wrong information I think they ran that trolley out there only on the weekends ? I remember something like that but I’m not sure. When I was a little kid back in the mid 80’s and Kensington was still holding on to its Irish catholic identity I used to go to my grand parents house off of Allegheny Ave and that’s about the time the 60 trolley went to the buses and we would mess around with my Kenzo friends asking them where are they going to go on vacation once they remove all of the trolley islands off of Allegheny ave.

      @@mrbig4532 Yes, the 23 trolley ran along Germantown. I haven't heard anything about it running on weekeneds, though. It got booted in '92 with the 56 and 15, but obviously they got the 15 back afterwards. I really hope they bring both of those back, I think it would be a good idea. In between the 80s and 90s SEPTA got rid of the remaining non-subway surface trolleys, If you paid close attention. The 60 (like you said), the 53, the 50, the 6, and of course the other 3 I mentioned. They made quite a big mistake removing them, and I've heard they purposfully self- sabotaged those trolleys by not purchasing the Kawasaki cars for the routes. I think It's pretty funny the City really wants those trolleys back. They're the ones who got SEPTA to put the 15 back, (which, thank god for that, really.)

    I agree that the now common caterpillar street trains are ugly and not suitable with our trolley system. I prefer single cars not connected together except maybe during rush hour. I don't think I'm alone in hoping that the next generation cars are not caterpillars and that they have poles instead of pantographs. I also like to see the wheels of the cars. These are just my preferences of course. Lastly, our cars are called trolleys or streetcars, NOT trams!

      I doubt we'll ever see a return to poles except in transit museums. As ugly as pans are, they're far more reliable than poles and can be operated automatically.

      It lost it's interurban status in 1982. Techinically it's not even a traditional trolley, it's a full blown light rail with trolley-like vehicles.

      @@CaseysTrains Barely trolley-like, I'd say. I think it's just a really weird light rail. I do love it dearly, though. In the past It might have been considered more like the 101 and 102 (hence the route 100) because it used to run on the J.G. Brill bullets, and those resemble trolleys much more than the current fleet of vehicles.

      @Stephen Mokshefski "trolley", with an e. But yes, it's generally considered to be an interurban / light rail. AFAIK there are no other truly comparable systems.
