I don't like the RIVAL mounting system as you pointed out. They are also a bit weak (but should not be a problem when you're not off road). Still have new ones on the shelves, but next to them lay the F4x4 skids, much beefier and sturdy mounting. I do like the side flaps on the rival's, they do a good job of keeping mud out.

Yeah they're only 1 or 2mm steel so I don't expect them do much protecting. At the price point though I can live with the downsides.
Do you have a link of where you purchased this from?
I just got it on ebay, but the supplier is no longer listing them I'm afraid
