Force of will was such a huge part of my life that it genuinly feels good to see someone talking about it in a positive sense. with the seeming rise in interest the game has gotten recently i can only hope this means more players having access to locals again.
We hear about new locals all the time! I really recommend checking out our "how to start playing in 2023 video" that was linked in this videos description for tips to jump back in!
Very interesting to learn the history of FoW. I only started playing last year so learning about the early period of the game is much appreciated. Looking forward to part 2!

I used to be a diehard player of this game. I made it to worlds twice, even making top 4 in 2015 (you can see me at several points in this video even XD). It was absolutely astounding how suddenly the game died, over here in the UK the game was already small but had a very devoted playerbase but after Reiya cluster it just disappeared. I was one of the players that got fed up and quit around the end of Lapis cluster so between that and the death of the game in the UK it's gonna be really interesting to hear about what happened in the next video Looking forward to it, thanks for taking the time to make a video about a game that at one point meant the world to me
You've done a great job. This video is not only the history of FoW, but also a lesson for Homemade Card Game Creators how to avoid mistakes. I can't wait for the 2nd part ;)

I finally understand why a booster box I bought years ago came with a signed copy of Cheshire Cat that's kinda amusing. All around, though, this has been an enlightening exploration of a game I wish my LGS' had in stock. I typically had to order stuff online the few times I got FoW stuff.
This was mostly fair. Bravo sir. I look forward to part two. This game’s community is second to none in terms of fervor. The people that love FOW really love it. So thanks for the trip down memory lane.
thx for this video, i joined towards the end of the lapis cluster (i even bought a pricia deck more or less just for it to get banned a day or two later) so i didn't know about the game state before besides from what i known from my playgroup which tends to be infodumpy so i often don't get what they say. u did this very well with a good speed etc

Funny enough, Eiji Shishido is actually working on Force of Will again! He has been appearing in a lot of their youtube videos lately, so it's great to see the creator involved/seemingly the damaged relationships repaired!
I LOVED Force of Will for the little bit I got to play it back in the day. Mainly played a chtuhlu deck and actually still have it along with some other cards, including the Valkyria Chronicles crossover decks. Unfortunately my locals stopped carrying the game and stopped doing tournaments when the few people who played it quit due to Baha blast. The double wammy of that really bad set and a tier 0 deck killed it in my area. Its cool to see that the game still continues even now but its nothing like what I remember and its still absolutely dead in my area with not one of the 5 or so local game stores nearby supporting it. Funnily enough though the other day after the yugioh tournament wrapped up some of the guys who used to play force of will sat down and to my surprise started playing their old decks for the fun of it. Felt so surreal seeing people play again after all this time.
22:50 interesting ideology, imo if you want to make a casual card cheaper simply stuff it in a box with a massive amount of meta cards so that many of these end up on the secondary market for cheap since everyone forces on those
Bro I miss this game I still got all my old cards I remember getting a god pack of the first grimm set felt amazing pulling so many shiny rares out of 1 pack.
This video took me back when I was started playing. I started since Vahalla cluster and experienced the game up until battle for attroctia where I stopped. I just found this video while trying to look up Eiji Shishido's impact on Force of Will. You said part 2 (yet to be released) will focus on him leaving the company. A friend recently sent me some cards from this game, and I'm totally gonna have to see if I can make 2 decks from them to see if I can make something playable. Though to be fair, for all I know, they flat out sent me 2 premade decks already and I just don't know it. lol
I loved this game as it came out. Unfortunately, all of my local shops stopped carrying it after the blunder of the broken meta talked about with the regalia.
Force of Will was and still is the only card game I think I’ve ever fully enjoyed regardless of meta because the game itself is just so fun and balanced to an extent. Compared to MTG where lands brick your hands or YGO where everyone is playing Combo. I always feel like I enjoyed my games in FoW
Well it is still alive! Sales are up since the worst times, although it is definitely a game that can vary dramatically depending on where you are located. If you want to know more you can check out the ruler school videos I linked in the description.
@@MonkeyFightTCG yeah have to agree player base varies wildly. the US and italy seem to have the most active. meanwhile here in the uk its pretty much dead apart from a couple guys down in london....which is way too far for me to travel just to be able to play so now i just collect

Just started this video. Excited to see how much hate Reflect and Refrain is going to get. That card alone killed the local scene around me and we all had collectively agreed before the ban to ban it from the store locals. But id be lying if i didnt admit that card was fun as shit to pilot
Funny enough, Reflect/Refrain just recently got rereleased as tag rulers in the past set, and they feel like an "ascended" version of the old reflect and refrain, but much better designed to feel more balanced/focused on their own gameplay archtype rather than just "insert generic good ruler here." It was a nice way to revisit the characters without causing the same issues as their first appearance!
@Ruler School TCG the fact Blazer, a Jruler specifically designed to counter Jruler strategies, could be blanked because they could respond by flipping back to the Ruler side was so dumb. Pre errata when they charged 2x as fast because they could activate ruler side on the opponents turn and your turn was even more nutty. The only local i ever won was with a raid boss Pricia, Beast Queen in Hiding deck that could only function because R&R could just fetch the combo pieces i needed which were all 1 ofs
Reflect/Refrain 15x Magic stone of wind 2x Exceed the ancient magic 3x Rewriting laws 2x Wind secluded refuge 1x Rhythm of life 1x Law of Silence 1x Beastly attack 1x The beast queen's counter attack 1x Sprint of the Beast lady 1x Drop if Yggdrasil 4x Change the world, Orb of illusion 1x Special armor 2x Morgiana, the wise servant l 4x Familiar of holy wind 2x Sinbad, the windrider merchant 3x Familiar of refrain 2x Hansel 4x Gretel 2x Fiethsing, the magus of holy wind 2x Glinda, the fairy 1x Pricia, Beast queen in hiding If anyone ever wants an ancient deck list that has been massively powercrept and if you're playing a format where for some reason you allow R&R and use sets from 2015
@@coreydopson2030 Oh i'm well aware of how good R/R were back in the old days. i'm just saying that they revisited them recently with new rulers and they were pretty fun/balanced
@Ruler School TCG unfortunately the state of the game got to the point my local stores stopped carrying their product. But I'm glad they chilled out with the egregious power creep
The dual deck with regalia wasn’t suppose to be legal until Alice 1 was released, US just didn’t have a choice as there were no other legal starter decks.
I havent' watched this yet, but as someone who was playing from 2016-2018 I started to hate how the game was playing out on top of all the product shortages in Reiya format. Made scary Sherry's deck with the stuff I pulled from boxes, traded my ruler away for an Uber Dark Alice and quit right around Time Spinning Witch's release due to our locals going from small to smaller and I will admit that I got very frustrated/angry when I played FoW so that was a factor as well. They also wanted to play on akward days so ontop of moving locations like 3 times in 3-4 months, they arranged tourneys on day that was more convenient for one particular local who I was not a fan of and that got on our nerves even more so. Game was fun and before the hostile takeover of the company I might have played a little longer, but I deal with Konami's bullshit already and I did not want a smaller card game yanking my chain even more so. Shame since I always thought it was just MtG but with better art.
Interesting vid. Also, kept help but keep hearing you say "REFRACT and refrain" 🤔 Watched the entire video, you're definitely right, one video won't be able to cover it all, I'd be surprised if two videos could do it justice. I was kinda hoping for more......variety of sources to pull from regarding the "history" of fow. As the video progress, it seemed to just be ruler school providing all the info. Would have loved some input from maybe lgs owners, former employees (But I get it, it's still a small tcg, Japanese company so prob language barrier, etc, etc). Nonetheless, it is great that TH-camrs such as yourself are talking about this game, can't wait for part 2.
Wow way to miss all of the hard work I put into the video. I pulled an insane amount of interviews with the creators. An insane amount of interviews with former players and I pulled quite a few deck profiles from former champions. I also found as much info from the distributors as they would legally give me. I didn't put every quote into the video because then the video would literally just be quotes. But I guess for someone without object permeance like yourself, that might be hard to understand.
@@MonkeyFightTCG whoa... Um, just going to say, I enjoyed the video, and it looks like what I said has really offended you (which no way did I intend for that to come across that way). Genuinely did not mean any offence or insult from my comment if that is how it came across...... Again, looking forward to part 2.
@@MonkeyFightTCG He is primarily mentioning the pull quotes. DM073 is a good source for the impact of elements into the game, but I can see what Poke wants being a mix of contemporary accounts and retrospective accounts in the video. I am curious if you have gotten in contact with Jeff Finnegan yet? he is very approachable and is like the only English speaking person who was party to the internal takeover; time and the birth of his kid has softened his angst about it though he might be strapped for time; caring for a young child and all. I would be hard to fit this in or find a good one but a quote from a guy who left at a particular controversy explaining the feelings that he and his group had at the moment of leaving the door would be interesting. TL;DR: it is a shame we don't write letters anymore so that future Ken Burns can read to elaborate on the elation, dread, and moments of confusion of being in the FoW fanbase. Ironically despite it being unsupported cluster format is where it is at for me, constant new game experiences balanced against each other set to set.
Sad, by the time I knew of FoW, 4th cluster of grimm destroyed my hopes of ever being able to play this game in central California. These days I'll call and even check in to local LGS in Bakersfield, Fresno and Visalia and not a soul. Back to Legends of Ruinterra for me I guess.
I love force of will. I wish they will make a video game of it with single and mulity player and for I can have a way to collet all the cards. and the if a video game of Force Of Will ever come out it shouldn't ban you from playing with cards in the game. Fuck yugioh video games for not letting use the cards in the game. I love the art work on the cards.
I remember buying the crap out of grimm and alice clusters... until reflect refrain came out and absolutely nuked this game like hiroshima noone enjoyed playing R&R for hours trying to outplay each other to get something to stick while ending up just leading to time in the round constantly. I watched the game completely die in real time at my locals and it was heart breaking, the t.o. at my shop even kept giving me the FoW promos for the next year til they finally stopped getting product entirely. I miss my sylvia deck my own home brew to counter R&R , i should dust it off for old times sake. Glad to hear the games still going i would love to play it again.
I've still got my force of Will stuffs. Its really interesting how a company can destroy itself. What truly killed the FoW TCG was the Valhalla format and the attempt to do many things all at once and it was too much to keep up with. Also, the community was really toxic on a level that warranted many to even go to magic or pokemon and considering how toxic those fanbases and communities are, you know it was very toxic. Its so unnecessary to make a game so un-fun for people. Why are people trying so hard to make the game unbearable?
the community now that is left is really good imo other than the guys who refuse to find anything wrong with it...the game just has so many problems that aren't being addressed (like Laurite not being banned...cuz he's 'fine' and/or a 'staple'.) I just can't get behind turn 3 wins or snowballs with little to no interaction and the people who defend it are maddening. Its like smashing yourself in the face with a pan and saying..oh yeah...that face cooks good!
Calling Baha "Falltgold" - technically accurate Calling Blazer "Rabus" - technically accurate, but painful Calling R/R "Refract and Refrain" - inaccurate and painful Calling Fiethsing "an elf deck" - don't let Gwiber players hear you speak this heresy Calling Lumia "Lumina" - I'm convinced this is happening on purpose now
The power creep in this game is stupid. So many low cost overloaded cards that really should be banned. I can't even read the text anymore so it sucks. I tried it hoping it wouldn't be what MtG is now and its worse. Just watch some of the tourneys...people get one turn and dead with little to no interaction. Can't get behind the competitive version of the game but I like the older stuff definitely before they fired the creator and started paywalling the game behind preorders and the 'contract' version of the judgement mechanic.
The problem with force of will tcg design is that unlike magic which has a mana system to curb power creep there is nothing in force of will that can stop powercreep cards from ruining the game in the future
@@MonkeyFightTCG Force of will has a fix mana system that lets players get mana every turn so playing power creep cards aren't a issue in FOW compare to magic you can say Magic's inconsistent mana system is a necessary evil for making game balance
hello. nice video. Some thoughts: 1- This was a long video. Consider adding an interlude to your scrips. Listening the same tone of voice for such a long period of time can make one lose concentration. 2- Other important thing the video is missing is a strong summanry of it´s content. Dont just make a record of events. Go into more detail, compare things and present your thoughts on the subject. 3- They wanted to make the game casual but without a ceiling for power? that rings like a contradiction to me. The story seems to agree with me. 4- So long story short the game was a total mess almost from the start? having design, destribution and diection problems? yet has been kept on life support for a long time thanks to some loyal fans? 5- can anyone report the state of the game in your country? 6- Looking forward for part 2.
Casual players like splashy and fun things it's not at contradictory that power creep would just be ignored if the focus was on finding the most fun looking thing from the start.
@@goncaloferreira6429 And surely that isn't a concern for casual players? Which is the point. It's serious players that care about game breaking mechanics
it isn't "technically" dead, but its dead. Just let them have this win. 😉 I was there for the Grimm cluster. @RulerSchoolTCG would get upwards of 6k to 15k views per video, now he gets what, 300 average per video? Of course he would say it isn't dead. His channel lives for FOW. The biggest Facebook FOW group then, now gets an average of 5 posts a month. 5 POSTS A MONTH!!! It isn't technically dead, but it isn't growing either. It is bleeding to death...to deny that is simply fanboying at this point.
I was one of the tournament player in top 8 trying to get the ticket to world championship the dead on this game is purely the trash balancing and marketing this game have on Western SURPRISE NOBODY Talking about the TRASH 0 COST META. severing wind 0 COST canceL Faerur ruler who flip and getting out free Elf which is very strong. he also able to recover 2 elf to cheat mana as well.

If anyone ever wants an ancient deck list that has been massively powercrept and if you're playing a format where for some reason you allow R&R and use sets from 2015
@@coreydopson2030 Oh i'm well aware of how good R/R were back in the old days. i'm just saying that they revisited them recently with new rulers and they were pretty fun/balanced
@Ruler School TCG unfortunately the state of the game got to the point my local stores stopped carrying their product. But I'm glad they chilled out with the egregious power creep
God I miss playing Force of Will.
Dark Alice is still my waifu
I also found my favorite card Artist Matsurika Yoko because of that card game
Hmmmm this was well done. Sorry, but now you have to do this with every tcg
I'm honestly considering it. I'll see how I feel after part is finished.
The dual deck with regalia wasn’t suppose to be legal until Alice 1 was released, US just didn’t have a choice as there were no other legal starter decks.
...part 2?...
Part 2 got taken over
I havent' watched this yet, but as someone who was playing from 2016-2018 I started to hate how the game was playing out on top of all the product shortages in Reiya format.
I like the FOW cards over all tcg's. Nobody makes a better card.
Interesting vid. Also, kept help but keep hearing you say "REFRACT and refrain" 🤔
Watched the entire video, you're definitely right, one video won't be able to cover it all, I'd be surprised if two videos could do it justice.
I have his information and plan on getting in contact with him for part 2.
I wish the movie wasn't cancelled I would of love it. Ask fans to make it look at all the fallout fan content
Calling Baha "Falltgold" - technically accurate
Calling Blazer "Rabus" - technically accurate, but painful
Calling R/R "Refract and Refrain" - inaccurate and painful
Calling Fiethsing "an elf deck" - don't let Gwiber players hear you speak this heresy
Calling Lumia "Lumina" - I'm convinced this is happening on purpose now
Love the video though, just thought this was funny as a player who was around for the time covered in the video
@@lolxae Hey man, you are still kind of around... you gotta come defend your world champion title ;)
Remember buying these purely bc I thought the "uber rares" looked cool af. Shame it died
But it's not dead? New set literally drops in 4 days, and worlds just happened this past July.
i remember the release of Fow it was so hyped lol i realy liked this game and still do but fow is literaly dead in germany
There are still events in Germany.. and we literally had a German playing in the top 8 of worlds this past July.
Reiya was such a bad set to buy
It was kind of terrifyingly buying a box only to pull 2 J-Rullers you already owned from the starter
This card game may be popular but without 'digital version' (PC for example) it can't match popularity of other Card Games like Magic the Gathering.
But force of will also has a mana system?
@@MonkeyFightTCG Force of will has a fix mana system that lets players get mana every turn so playing power creep cards aren't a issue in FOW compare to magic you can say Magic's inconsistent mana system is a necessary evil for making game balance
hello. nice video. Some thoughts:
1- This was a long video.
@@MonkeyFightTCG we disagree. 25 years of games have shown me that if there are no limits things will break.
@@goncaloferreira6429 And surely that isn't a concern for casual players? Which is the point. It's serious players that care about game breaking mechanics

Wizards of the coast please buy out FOW and make it great. Either that or Nintendo please buy out FOW and bring it back to life.
this been dead for years
It's still going
new set drops tomorrow, with a gp with an invite for worlds in 2 weeks, and worlds in japan in July of this year. pretty sure it ain't dead :)
@@RulerSchoolTCG this has been on mechanical ventilation for a while, just disconnect the plug already and let it have a decent death.
it isn't "technically" dead, but its dead. Just let them have this win. 😉
I was there for the Grimm cluster.
Sure, it's not as prevalent as it used to be and it did take a massive dip, but to say it's dead is not true.
game is dead play Yugioh instead
Except it isn't. New set literally drops in 4 days. Sets drop every 3 months and there is a competitive scene Including a world championship.
I was one of the tournament player in top 8 trying to get the ticket to world championship
the dead on this game is purely the trash balancing and marketing this game have on Western
SURPRISE NOBODY Talking about the TRASH 0 COST META. severing wind 0 COST canceL
Faerur ruler who flip and getting out free Elf which is very strong. he also able to recover 2 elf to cheat mana as well. These are the death of FOW
They also havent learn lesson and release another 1 cost cancel spell Faerur spell
Where’s part 2?
