Millyard Kawasaki H2A 1000 four cylinder - Maintanence tips and ride

  • In this video im talking about a 1973 Kawasaki H2A 1000 four cylinder that I made in 2016. The engine produces 120 bhp and the bike is exciting to ride but is always trying to go faster than you should be! The engine was originally a 750cc triple which I re engineered into a 4 cylinder by adding one extra cylinder top the left hand side. The video has its usual wildlife and cooking interludes where Tracey is making cakes, and is looking after the hedgehogs and birds. Hope you enjoy this video and if you could subscribe that would be brilliant, to help me achieve my next TH-cam milestone.

      Hi Alen ,That's a clean exhaust when you open it up,you reduced the oil pump? I had the Suzuki GT550 two stroke triple and it was smokeless around town but on the open road 60 and above a lot of smoke for 10/20 minutes.Also that sound quiet compared to my four exhaust pipes,centre pot splitting into two little exhaust pipes

    If someone didn't know any better, they would think the bike came from the factory as a four cylinder. It is amazing how Allen makes his modified bikes look like a factory produced product. There's something therapeutic yet infuriating about Allen's videos. On the one hand, seeing everything working just so perfectly is absolutely wonderful. On the other, I've been trying to get the center cylinder on my 400 triple to run correctly for years, and I'm just too stupid to make that happen, while Allen is building whole motorcycles with a hacksaw and a roll of sandpaper, and they run like Swiss watches.

    • @cedriclynch
      @cedriclynch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Is there any possibility that the crankshaft of your engine could have been rebuilt by someone without much experience of this model? At least some of them have the crank webs fitted to the main journal sections by friction only, no splines or key. Without special tools, or having put the crankshaft into a lathe and scribed a straight line along all the crank webs before dismantling it, it becomes very likely that the cranks are not properly set at 120 degrees to each other and if you set the ignition timing by the marks on the generator rotor it could be way out on the centre and/or right-hand cylinders.
      The same applies to Suzuki twin and triple 2-stroke engines, but not to Yamaha twins as they have splines.

    • @JETZcorp
      @JETZcorp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@cedriclynch The guy that did my crank has been the go-to for 2-stroke cranks in the area for the last 50 years and has an excellent reputation in the vintage bike community. If it had been anyone else I might have my doubts, but Charlie has done hundreds of Triples. I've also monkeyed with the timing quite a bit, beyond simply following the marks. I can make the bike run worse, but not better! Lol.
      Great suggestion though.

    • @cedriclynch
      @cedriclynch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@JETZcorp Another few suggestions: (1) fit precious-metal-tipped spark plugs if you haven't already; (2) with the engine idling, slightly pull the throttle cable of one carb and adjust the mixture screw of this carb to get the best response; then do the same on the other two in turn. (Is it possible that the middle cylinder is not firing at all at idle, possibly due to a blocked idle jet or an air leak into the inlet stub?)
      On some Kawasaki 2-strokes I have worked on I have found that the ports are very badly finished; the passages in the cast-iron liner and the aluminum jacket do not line up. In such cases some work on them with riffler files can work wonders for smooth running and give more power as well.

    • @davidelliott5843
      @davidelliott5843 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried to fit an MZ 250 with a Mikuni from the Suzuki GT500. It was virtually a straight swap, but refused to run right. I was convinced it was running weak but nothing worked. Then on (yet) another test ride it ran out of petrol and for a few moments the bike went like stink. It had been running rich all along and I made the basic mistake of assuming the original jetting was correct. Sadly, there were no jets available for that old carb so I put the bike back to the original. At least it was usable.
      So check your carburettor. It might be nothing to do with the ignition.

    • @JETZcorp
      @JETZcorp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidelliott5843 Yeah, I've been all through the carbs. It does definitely feel like it needs to be leaner, but it's strange that it's rich at all throttle positions until a certain RPM. But the carbs are pretty crappy and best up in general, so I've been considering replacing them.

    "We´re going to need a bigger boat," -- Jaws.
    "We´re going to need another cylinder," -- Allen Millyard.
    Oh, and some fruitcake.
    I´ve patched up a few old bikes and even butchered a few, but this man is both a surgeon and an artist, and there is a massive amount of knowledge and skill involved here which impresses me no end.
    And having always preferred the smaller roads, on everything up to my BMW R100RS, I like the way he builds big bikes for little roads.
    There is such a difference between gearing up for your ride, getting everything right, and having a good blast, and riding to work early in the morning, a place you´d rather avoid, in rotten weather, when you are a bit hung over from the night before ...
    Allen reinforces my opinion that motorcycles are NOT a form of transport, they are much, much more than that.
    I´ve joined the ranks of elderly gentlemen on scooters, and what do you know ? For all of my decades of experience, I´m once again, a small fish in a big pool.

    A terrific video Allen.
    In the 1970s and 80s, I lived in Gunnedah NSW, Australia, and was a member of the motorcycle club there.
    A fellow club member, Mal Mapperson (with passenger Rusty Scrivenor) had won the 1966 Australian Dirt track Championship, and finished second in the U/L sidecar race at Bathurst (on his highly tuned Triumph).
    Following a bad back injury when felling trees, Mal mostly focused on sidecar road racing during the 1970s, and around 1975 he was racing an H2 powered sidecar with considerable success. Towards the end of the 70s, he did what you have done here - he added an extra cylinder. He raced the Kawasaki 1000 with considerable success, both in road racing and in speedway racing.
    The bike is now in the National Motor-Racing Museum in Bathurst. Bike number 92.

    As an engineering teacher I am very impressed with the innovative techniques and attention to detail in these modifications. I enjoy them very much. The bad news is that I owned an original 1972 H2 Blue Meanie as they were nicknamed. They earned their reputation as one one the most dangerous motorcycles ever made. They did one thing very well and that was go fast in a straight line and that was it. They accelerated so fast, the back wheel quickly ran under the front causing an almost uncontrollable wheelie. They had poor stopping power and a weak frame that flexed under hard cornering. I can't imagine what this thing would be like with another 50 HP.

    First time I have seen this site. Really brings back memories of years ago when I was young and single I had an S2, when I was still in school, then bought a KH 500 used the cruise Lloydminster AB killing everything in town. Then did some mod stock racing on weekends. Would love to see these up close. He truly is a mechanical wizard.

    That 1000cc 4 cyl Kawasaki sounds better than anything I have ever heard - absolutely gorgeous.
    As for that cake, it looks heavenly and I could almost taste it from here.
    Well done yet again sir.

    Can't believe you were able to do this, as if not much more than a hacksaw and fingernail file were needed to pull off this mind-boggling conversion. Speechless. Made me recall my 1971 CB-750, though, my first bike, one I enjoyed 100%.

    Memories, Oh, the memories.... '67-'70, Yokota AB, Japan, and me with a brand new Kawasaki Mach III, 500 cc triple. On one of my tours, heading for Kyushu, I found myself racing the bullet train for a few miles in southern Honshu..... prior to the Mach III, had a Kawasaki A1SS 2-stroke, rotary valve 250 cc, and then bought a Kawasaki 650 cc W1SS. I eventually ended up with the Honda 750/4 and took it and a Kawasaki F7(?) 175 cc with Hata forks back to the States..... Oh, those were good times. Many bikes later and probably my final ride, I now ride my Suzuki S-70 650cc Savage. Thanks for the memories!

    I had an S3 400 in the 80s. I love the way triple & now quad 2 strokes sound. Keep on building those crazy engines. It takes a while to get through your videos but the soothing way you walk us through your builds encourages patients. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

      The S3 400 was the best of the Kawasaki triples as far as being an actual motorcycle that you can use as regular transportation. They handle the best and overall are just the best designed triple Kawasaki made. And they're still quick bikes.

    Hi Alan, a lifetime ago I grafted two RD400 bottom ends together keeping the right hand engine complete with an extended driven shaft to get the engine sprocket to line up with the rear one and used two pairs of 350LC power valve top ends jacked up to match the stroke so 800cc power valve 😁 that went into an XS650 frame and tarted up the look like Mr Roberts yam the plew the Harley's away on the dirt tracks. God knows where it is or if it is still in one piece.
    Man caves are such wonderful places and I love cake as well 😂. Ian.

    You're a genius Allen, it's always interesting watching you maintain and adapt these fantastic classics.
    Your calm and coherent demeanour and eye for detail, makes for quality workmanship, and you always make time for a cake or two and include animals in your videos. My favourite Motorcycles are the Japanese ones from about 1969 to 1983. It's the classics I enjoy seeing the most. There are so many great 2-Stroke & 4-stroke motorcycles from that era and if I was to pick a favourite it would be a 1975 Honda CB750F Super Sport in Candy Sapphire Blue or Sunburst Orange. It might have been called Sunrise Orange but thanks for keeping some of those fantastic bikes alive and in great working order. All the best Allen.
