I was gonna same the same myself, great film. I really liked the use of the soundtrack in that movie. The way the theme changes throughout the movie from jingoistic to tragic really brings home how the soldiers must have felt in the situation.
Elem Klimov's "Come and See" is a masterpiece. The burning of the village at its climax is one of the most harrowing scenes of the savagery of the war in the east.
The Unknown Soldier (2017) about the Finnish/Russian Continuation War. 3 hours long and tells the story of the brutal fighting in the forests of Finland. Talvisota (aka The Winter War) (1989) is also a good one.
I do love this list and some parts I do disagree with, I'm just quite suprised that you did not include "Stalingrad" (1993). One of the best war movies ever made in my opinion.
"Come and See" is an incredibly scary movie. And the understanding that it was in real life and real people experienced it only increases this fear. Oh, my God, I don't want a war!
I read once about it that the teenager that plays the main boy, was so badly effected by the method of production that his hair actually went white and he had ptsd by filming end. I Seen parts of it years ago and admit it was too much for me. The HORRORS. It would make Number one as my antiwar movie list.
Can’t think of anything better than Come and See. It truly depicts what war has always been; Horror. Absolutely genius how they filmed it like it was more a horror film than an action war film. With its nerve-racking environment, disturbing imagery, and complete tone of despair, it’s honestly one of the greatest war films of all time. Such raw and terrifying depiction of the insanity and destruction war brings to us all.
Not to mention there was a convict unit that is deceipted in the film that exist. They were so brutal that even the SS were disgusted was shock by they action.
True. Some movies because of action scenes make war look aesthetically pleasing. True war is different I had the opportunity to listen to 2ww soldier, guy got medal for bravery and what he told us was that he basically shat his pants when he saw about 20 enemies, his hand froze on the trigger of machine-gun and that he didn't even look where he was shooting. Managed to get most of then, git medal, truth wasn't pretty tho
Thx for the recommendation, I just watched all 5 episodes and it was absolutely amazing. The intro alone was always a pleasure to watch, with that beautiful music.
Come and See is the only option I can think of. It accurately illustrates the horrors of war throughout history. It was brilliant how they filmed it as if it were a horror picture rather than an action war film. It is, without a doubt, one of the best war pictures of all time, with its tense setting, frightening images, and bleak tone. Such a visceral and horrifying representation of the madness and devastation that war brings to all of us.
I must add, I believe the 2017 film "Darkest Hour" is one of the most underrated, and one of the greatest War films, at least of the 2010's. It deserves more credit, not just as a companion peice to the film "Dunkirk", which inadvertently overshadows the film in question in any conversation, but as a standalone masterpiece, and as a sort of British answer to the 1970 classic "Patton". I for one, would much appreciate that the film receives its just reward, and approval from the wider war film fan groups of the internet.
Also a very good WW2 movie is the "1944" which focuses on the rather unknown battles on the Eastern front in Estonia (Sinimäed and Saaremaa). It's a sad story of Brother fighting against a Brother (Estonian against another Estonian).
Glad you mentioned Ivan's Childhood (1962) as this is Andrei Tarkovsky's first major film, and an excellent study of what effect the Eastern Front had on children and soldiers, in Russia. Another mention should be Stalingrad (1993) and I personally like Das Boot the best of all the WWII films you mentioned. Good list though!

The Pacific Theatre is very little covered in movies but I would list Tora! Tora! Tora! in the honourable mention list. Also Enemy At The Gates for the Eastern Front. It was a very good book covering the entire siege of Stalingrad of which Vasili Zeitsev took up about eight pages.
Come and See is criminally underrated. It really portrays the psychological effects of war in a way no other movie does. It is a weird movie, but absolutely worth watching.

Steve McQueen also appeared in that film about a Japanese POW camp, about a camp survivor who only survived unscathed because he was lower than a sewer rat, that film did have a lot of merit
"Paths of Glory" (1957) Kubrick's controversial WWI film starring Kirk Douglas, Which was pretty much banned in France until 1975, possibly deserved a mention. "Kelly's Heroes" for pure entertainment alone.

Thank you for bringing 'Come and See' to my attention. I'd never heard of it before, and will now make every effort to watch it. There have been so many war films over the years, and many would qualify for inclusion in the top 15. My list would include "The Cruel Sea" perhaps the best British war film ever made, and William Wyler's "The Best Years of Our Lives", which in my view is one of the greatest films of any genre. In conclusion, it is a relief to see the absurd 'Fury' not included.
Glad you mentioned both Come & See and Ivan’s Childhood. However I really really wish you mentioned The Human Condition, directed by Masaki Kobayashi. A 9 hour epic that follows a japanese man through many aspects of the war from the Japanese perspective, but from someone who was hesitant about the war in the first place.
Great list. I do find the non American war movies are the most realistic. Movies like fury and Dunkirk just leave you angry with its impossible unrealistic portrayals.
My absolute favorite WWII movie is 'La vita e bella", an italian movie about a jewish family. This movie manages to make me cry like a baby every single time. It's a shame not a lot of people know about this movie!
“The Enemy Below” was one of the best. I have spoken to WWII veterans who served on Destroyers, Destroyer Escorts, and Submarines. When ever ‘best motion pictures of WWII’ came up this film was always mentioned. To a man they all stated it was one of the most realistic movies that depicted their service in the war.
A personal favorite, for its simple but (to me) profoundly moving moving portrayal is A Walk in the Sun about a platoon landing in Italy, walking 6 miles inland to capture a farmhouse. Sounds simple enough.... but it showed the first combat stress breakdown I’d ever seen in the movies, shows average cynical GI’s who aren’t and all in all a very human portrayal. Well worth viewing-- not claiming it’s #1, but certainly top 15. Also, Cruel Sea and The Enemy Below are 2 of the finest naval war pictures
if we're throwing out recommendations, here's a few I haven't seen mentioned in the comments: Memphis Belle ('90), Midway ('73), Life is Beautiful ('97), Flying Tigers ('42), The Enemy Below ('57), In Harms Way ('65)
Add: Life is Beautiful. When my son and I saw it in the theater, we both said, “we have just seen a perfect movie”. Amazing combination of humor and tragedy. We laughed, we cried, and cheered.
Excellent list. I think Schindler’s List is a must inclusion but I would like to suggest Son of Saul as an alternative and perhaps more nuanced portrayal of the Holocaust. I think The Longest Day holds up well as a a documentary style film on D-Day. And finally for sheer breathtaking cinematography The Battle of Britain is a must see. Honorable mentions to Tora Tora Tora, Enemy at the Gate, Cross of Iron and for pure escapism, the fictional drama The Eagle has Landed.

One of my favorites is called the 12th man which is about a soldier stuck in Norway trying to get to Sweden. It is based on a real story and the craziest parts are actually true.
"Der Untergang" is really awesome movie and Bruno Ganz as Hitler is unforgettable. I think the chart should also include the Finnish war film "The Unknown Soldier" (Tuntematon sotilas), directed by Aku Louhimies 2017. It tells the story of Finnish soldiers in the war against the Soviet Union in 1941-1944. The film is based on Väinö Linna's famous novel. The Estonian war film "1944" (2015) is also very good.
Thank you for including Rome Open City. All of the films in Rossellini's war trilogy are masterpieces of the genre, but this one especially. I personally would have made room for 49th Parallel (Powell and Pressburger) and the Russian film Ballad of a Soldier, which magnificently humanizes the otherwise anonymous enlisted man. My own choice for "Number One"? A Hidden Life, the story of Austrian war resister Franz Jagerstaetter.

Come and See is absolutely incredible and horrific. I’ve never had a film affect me like it did. A total masterpiece; I tell anyone who will listen to watch it.
I agree with 7 on your list. And your honorable mention had 4 on it that’s in my top 15. Task Force, In Harms Way, The Longest Day, And the New Midway.
Maybe you should take a look at When Trumpets Fade. It was unlucky enough to be released in the same year as Saving Private Ryan, so it got less attention. And it's not exactly about a hero, but an anti-hero. A soldier who doesn't want to die in another country. I found it a good movie, real human emotions. Nobody wants to die and heroes...well, not everybody is one.
I couldn't agree more with the number 1 choice here. Come and See is a masterpiece and unlike any other war movie ever made. It's incredible that most people in the western hemisphere have not seen or heard of this movie yet (it was released in 1985!).

I read once about it that the teenager that plays the main boy, was so badly effected by the method of production that his hair actually went white and he had ptsd by filming end. Some of the people in the FIM were ones that survived that part of the war

Come and See is the only option I can think of. It accurately illustrates the horrors of war throughout history. It was brilliant how they filmed it as if it were a horror picture rather than an action war film.

Best WW2 movies/ series I watched recently.
1. Stalingrad 1993
2. Unknown Soldier
3. Come and see
4. Hacksaw Ridge
Those were really good and my favorite WW2 movies / series I have ever watched.
Kudos for giving "Come And See" the credit it deserves. In my mind, when it comes to movies touching the subject of WWII, there are two categories, "Come And See" and everything else.
I’ve seen nearly every one of these and In my opinion Fury and Hacksaw ridge deserve a spot in the top 10
Some classics that deserve at least a mention - The Cruel Sea, The Dambusters, Angels One Five and Hurricane
Come and See is absolutely incredible and horrific. I’ve never had a film affect me like it did. A total masterpiece; I tell anyone who will listen to watch it.
I am in complete agreement.
Yes. No other war film comes close. It's in a different league entirely.
"I've never had a film affect me like it did" ~ I agree - a work of art of the highest level - it changes you.
I agree with 7 on your list. And your honorable mention had 4 on it that’s in my top 15. Task Force, In Harms Way, The Longest Day, And the New Midway.
I loved “The Longest Day” and surprised to not see it on your list.
When I watch "The Longest Day" these days, I fast-wind through the John Wayne sections.
Grave of the fireflies is an amazing animated movie from Studio Ghibli about the firebombing of japan, one of the most heartbreaking movies to watch.
Yes. A big mistake leaving this one out. Especially with dross like Dunkirk getting in.
Come and see is the best. Would like to see Unknown soldier on the list.
Have not seen or heard of "Come and see? Not more..
i cant believe that you put Dunkirk and Downfall on last two places...
