I’m surprised passchendael didn’t make the honourable mention. It’s a great movie if you skip the boring love story in the middle. Just watch the end battle, it’s solid.
Great brutal depiction of combat in WWI for the Canadians, but honestly not a great movie entirely. It’s loaded with boring generic love story flashbacks and usual troupes of ‘the veteran wanting to go back to the front because he doesn’t fit in with society anymore’. An average movie but very well done battle scenes.
The Red Baron was a good movie. I enjoyed seeing it from his point of view and seeing him lose faith in the war as his friends fall was a great thing to show. Also All Quiet On The Western Front was made multiple times, the book is still better than any of the movies.
I really really recommend a Serbian movie "King Peter the First", a newer movie. Really well done and tells a story of multiple characters, real life accurate lives and story of the youngest soldier in WW1 and of course, King Peter the First who went into battles. Depicts the most important battles of WW1, since everything started in Serbian Kingdom at that time. Most bone-chilling moment in the movie is when the Serbian army was forced to retreat through harsh Albanian mountains, not only hunger, flus, sickness, cold weather were the problem but the Albanians who killed the weakest that were left behind. Depicts every detail of Serbia in WW1. I really really recommend that movie, as the movie progress it gets more darker.
There are two films that you did not mention that definitely deserved a mention the first being the Lost Battalion, the true story of about a America Battalion that was caught behind enemies lines, surrounded by Germans and under assault by their own artillery. and the second being The Lighthorsemen, which is another true about the Australian Light Horse Charge at the battle of Beersheba
The Lost Battalion is arguably the most accurate movie portraying an actual war event. The actors not only look like the actual participants, but much of the dialog is taken from their accounts. This one should be a classic on everyone's list.
lawrence of arabia is one of the best biographies imo, it gets into the mind of the main character in such a great way and shows how he views himself as a god, the scene where he was getting whipped was absolutely amazing, the way he was starting to feel fear, helplessness and vulnerability
i'm glad you mentioned "La grande guerra". What a great film. Alberto Sordi and Vittorio Gassman are two of italian all-time finest actors, and director Mario Monicelli is also among the greatest. I suggest "Uomini contro" from Francesco Rosi, another ww1 film from the italian perspective
The Trench (1999) was also a good one, staring Daniel Craig and Paul Nicholls as it depicts the long grueling dull life in the trench. Little action, but great depiction of another rarely mentioned battle for these soldiers; the waiting.
Passchedaele's is a pretty decent one about Canadian troops in the titular battle. It is home to one of the most brutal hand to hand combat scenes I've seen in a war film when the German troops assault the Canadian line.
A few omissions ...The Trench, The Blue Max, Red Baron, Dr Zhivago, The Lighthorseman, ANZACs, Aces High, , Zeppelin, Flyboys, Michael Collins, Ryan's Daughter, Shout at the Devil, Admiral, Journey's End, Wipers Times - Not easy, is it?
Sabaton Pillars of Wisdom is ringing in my head after seeing number one- excellent choice!!! Thank you for this compilation, I look forward to some serious binge watching!
Two other missed film, "Le capitain Conan", French film about the commander of a commando unit on the Bulgarian front, and "Uomini contro", Italian film on warfare in the Alps, from the book of Lussu, who was an officer there.
A good list. Love Lawrence of Arabia, but it is more of a grand epic than a war movie. Maybe #5. I think Joyeux Noel should be top three. No. 1...Gallipoli. The excitement of the unknown, the horror of the trenches, the camaraderie. Unforgettable.
Man War Horse only honorable? It is the only WW 1 movie to make me cry. I can see why they didnt include "Flyboys" in this, it's a okay WW 1 movie, but I dont think it was very accurate. Since it came out in 2006, it's kind of lost in time. Especially James Franco starred in it. Still a great list. Older wars and WW 1 especially is hard work for any film maker. I can see why many dont touch it. Still sad to see WW 1 as now a "forgotten war"
All great movies, another you could of mention is "Benath hill 60" about Australian tunnelers and the largest explosion of the war. Defiantly a recommendation to watch
Good to see both 'Big Parade' and the original 'All Quiet' in there - though, personally speaking, you missed the best scenes in both. People mention 'Journey's End', but you didn't include 'Aces High' with Roddy McDowell, which is 'Journey's End' with wings attached. Sorry, too, that 'Wings' only got an honourable mention, likewise 'Sergeant York', two of my personal favourites. 'Wings' is infinitely superior - and rather more believable - than Hell's Angels ever could be!
Monicelli's "La Grande Guerra" is an adaptation of both Emilio Lussu's "One year on the plateau" (Un anno sull'altipiano) and Guy de Maupassant "Two friends" (Deux amis). Francesco Rosi's "Many Wars Ago" (Uomini Contro/Men Against) is known to be the "other italian WW1 film". Is more serious and grittier than "La Grande Guerra", but it was not less controversial , because of political reasons and anti-war/anti-military sentiment.
A Canadian film “Passchendaele” ought to be high on this list. Also, “Aces High” is a good movie. Being a WW1 fighter pilot was depicted as grueling rather than glamorous.
The Lost Battalion is a little known movie about an American battalion , most of the soldiers were from NYC, that got encircled by the Germans in the Argonne Forest. They were bombed on by the American artillery. It is really worth checking out. One of my favorite WW1 movies
I totally forgot about The Big Parade. It was a great movie and accurate. The most horrific one I saw was All Quite on the Western Front. The battle scene were filmed in the Hills of Irvine and Corona Del Mar California where I grew up and did Archaeology in the 70s and 80s. Many of the extras were actual veterans of the war, both American and German.
@Shubham Ujjwal That is tough to answer. In the case of All Quiet on the Western Front, (the 1930s version) it is shown occasionally on the TCM channel. The Big Parade (silent) is shown there as well along with Helldivers.
Other honourable mentions : Blue Max , Lost batallion , Beneath hill 60 , Silent mountain , Passchendaele , Forbidden ground , The trench , Company K , La peur , Journeys end , Passing bells , Crimson field , Our world war , Testament of youth , Flyboys , Aces high , Red baron , Anzacs , Regeneration , Water diviner , My boy Jack , All the kings men , Hello angels.
WWI is especially important for Canada’s national identity, the losses we suffered were catastrophic, so, while not necessarily on the level of the films on your list, you might be interested in Passchendaele, a very good 2008 film about Canada’s 10th Battalion. Also, DW Griffith’s Hearts of the World is a controversial but very effective 1918 film, bordering on propaganda, that has the advantage of actually being partially filmed in the trenches of WWI. You may also be interested in both adaptations of Somerset Maugham’s novel The Razor’s Edge, the first from 1946 with Tyrone Power is probably the better film, but the second, 1984, stars Bill Murray (!), and I was quite taken with it when it came out, but have no idea if it aged well.
I guess A Very Long Engagement just had to steal the trench walking scene from Paths of Glory. Also, thanks for including PoG. Too many people haven't seen it. It's not even included in 99% of the Kubrick box sets.
Wings was such an amazing film. All quite on the western front is a movie that was truly and epic, captures the horror of WW1. Kinda sad not to have seen Hells Angels in this collection
Am I the only one who feels 1917 is a bit overrated? It had some good action and some stirring visuals but it felt pretty gimmicky to me. Plus there’s a cut to black at the end of the second act, which feels quite jarring. I’m sorry, I liked it but All Quiet is much better imo. Good list otherwise :)
No, you are not the only one.😉 Although the art of photography and the camera work is remarkable, the plot somehow did not get me. "Im Westen nichts Neues/All quiet on the Western Front" (even the coloured 70s/80s remake) is by far much 'better".

Thank you very much 🙏🏻
I was playing bf1 while watching this
Flyboys is a typical unrealistic hollywood movie, thanks god its not in that list
@@alexp2327 I didn’t mention flyboys but okay
Yeah, Flyboys is up there (or down there) with U-571 (a WWII based film) when it comes to historical accuracy…
It's horrible.
The Lost Battalion is another great underrated WWI film.
Kind of an underrated movie, but I feel like “ The lost Battalion” Should’ve been on this list
Bruh I don’t even think I knew 12 ww1 films before this video.
"The Lost Battalion" belongs on a list somewhere, as does "Passchendaele".
Passchendaele is awesome
Now you have a new one to add to the list, the 2022 version of "all quiet on the western front"
Great post thank you! But where's 'The Blue Max'?
One of the best WW1 movies ever made, but so long Ive never been able to watch the whole thing in one sitting. Haha
#1 for sure belongs there, but the light horseman should be on the list.
King of Hearts is an all time great ant-war film. The final scene of Alan Bates rings true.
You forgot The Lost Battalion (2001), which not only should've placed, but would've been pretty high on the list.
The blizzard of souls is a good one too! And its my favurite!
I assume u dont count tv movies but “the lost batallion” was pretty good...
All great movies, another you could of mention is "Benath hill 60" about Australian tunnelers and the largest explosion of the war. Defiantly a recommendation to watch
100%
Too true mate
True that mate ,by far way better than that piece of crap movie 1917
I love Gallipoli, but for a movie called Gallipoli, it sure took them a long time to get to Gallipoli. Lol
Great list couldn’t agree more with Lawrence of Arabia being anywhere else but the number 1 spot.
"The Blue Max" Anyone?
The Lost Battalion is a little known movie about an American battalion , most of the soldiers were from NYC, that got encircled by the Germans in the Argonne Forest. They were bombed on by the American artillery. It is really worth checking out. One of my favorite WW1 movies

"The lost battalion" is a great and under appreciated world War one movie
The Blue Max is my favorite WWI film sure it has big issues but the flying scenes are better than the CGI fest Fly boys made 45 years later.
'Beneath Hill 60' is an very good film in my opinion.
Johnny got his gun made the best song of all time - “one” by Metallica the
Battlefield 1 Storm of Steel is greatest WW1 interactive sequence i have played.
@Shubham Ujjwal Several are free on TH-cam
The Lost Battalion always gets overlooked on these lists
Other honourable mentions : Blue Max , Lost batallion , Beneath hill 60 , Silent mountain , Passchendaele , Forbidden ground , The trench , Company K , La peur , Journeys end , Passing bells , Crimson field , Our world war , Testament of youth , Flyboys , Aces high , Red baron , Anzacs , Regeneration , Water diviner , My boy Jack , All the kings men , Hello angels.
The Lighthorsemen
@@johnhunter9646 : Yes , that’s a good movie.
Journey's End (2017) and Regeneration, aka Behind the Lines (1997), should not be ignored.
The lost battalion is one of my personal favorites.
The Lost Battalion is a great WW1 movie that somehow missed this list.
1917 is my favorite movie
Its awesomeee
Yes sir!
Westfont 1918 (1930) and Red Baron (2008) are also Great Films.
War Horse was a great film and set in WW1. It focused on many aspects of war surely deserves more than a mention.
Journey’s End (2017) is my favorite WW1 movie. It’s on amazon prime video.
Thank you for including Gallipoli
Am I the only one who feels 1917 is a bit overrated? It had some good action and some stirring visuals but it felt pretty gimmicky to me. Plus there’s a cut to black at the end of the second act, which feels quite jarring. I’m sorry, I liked it but All Quiet is much better imo. Good list otherwise :)
No, you are not the only one.😉
Although the art of photography and the camera work is remarkable, the plot somehow did not get me.
"Im Westen nichts Neues/All quiet on the Western Front" (even the coloured 70s/80s remake) is by far much
'better".
@@frankschonig2817 good to know bro :). Lawrence of Arabia is still the deserved winner nonetheless. Both great films.
