Tora! , Gallipoli, Braveheart, Born on The Fourth of July, Empire of the Sun, Valkyrie, Iron Cross, Last of the Mohicans, The Last Samurai, Fury, The Book Thief, Master and Commander, Unbroken, Enigma, Tears of the Sun, Stalingrad...
The longest Day was great, but still kinda cliche for its time. Tora! x3 should have been at least honorable mention. Fury and Unbroken would make the cut in 20 years after they've had a chance to marinate with audiences.

It' my understanding that during it's viewing by the test audiences that some combat veterans had to leave during the landing scene. Apparently it was so realistic that these guys were having flashbacks of when they were there.
We Were Soldiers is a ground breaking film based on historical fact. I put it right up there with Private Ryan. You also missed Greyhound. How did you miss Enemy at the Gates!

Saving Private Ryan is by far the best My dads friend fought for Australia and he has a lot of head trauma. Waking up in the middle of the night to sounds of guns and explosions even though there's no guns or explosions
I realize Band of Brothers is a mini-series but, to me, it is the best war film to date. As far as movies, Hacksaw Ridge gets my #1 favorite war movie.
I agree, BOB was the best real time combat filming I have ever seen. BTW my dad was in the 41. Biak, Hollandia, ect the part in the Pacific where crazy man knocks out the gold teeth of Japanese, is all true. They had a guy in his unit that was just like SNAFU>
If im completely honest i absolutely love Black Hawk Down. I would give my top 3 as 1. Saving Private Ryan 2. Black Hawk Down 3. Hacksaw Ridge There are so many war movies that i think are amazing but these 3 movies are hands down my favorite.
Apparently, no one has seen "we were soldiers" a true story based on General Moore, during Vietnam. to me, that is the best movie about that period because its true and very well done.
I think it's a decent movie, but I thought it was a joke when it won Best Picture. It's one of the least deserving Oscar best picture wins ever in my opinion.
Been able to appreciate a film like that..Or taking the time to diss it is obviously an IQ thing ...Even if it's not to someones taste or the subject is something someone has no interest ect ect... It is one of those films that makes a masterpiece out of it's subject cos everyone in front and behind the camera are story tellers making a quality film....
I had just gotten an expensive new surround sound audio-video setup and the first movie I played on it was "Saving Private Ryan", I was unable to see it in the theatre so I bought it as soon as the DVD was released. I was not prepared to be not only overwhelmed by the opening act, but brought to tears not only by what I saw, but also the sound of war was nearly overwhelming. I have never seen anything like it since. An excellent movie with a cast of high-power talent.
I saw this in a theater with a great sound system. The opening scene was so realistic that I could feel the bullets going by my head. There were a few vets in the theater that actually cried or had to leave because the sound was so real to them.
enemy at the gates? Wasn;t that the film about the snipers in stalingrad? If it was i thought it failed badly since for the most part you lost nay sense that this was one of the bloodiest battles in human history. it just seemed to settle down to sniping. The best part was ed Haris managed to make a german not seem like the bad guy so much as the opponent.
My favorite: 1) Saving Private Ryan 2) Letters from Iwo Jima 3) Apocalypse Now 4) Fury 5) Full Metal Jacket 6) War Horse 7) All Quiet on the Western Front 8) WeWere Soldiers 9) The Bridge on the River Kwai 10) Lawrence of Arabia 11) Passchendaele 12) The Alamo 13) Waterloo BTW I haven't seen Platoon YET.
No, Blackhawk Down was OK but left out a lot of information. But I agree that The Hurt Locker shouldn't be on the list. Maybe Hamburger Hill or When We Were Soldiers should have took its place.
What? I won't argue against Black Hawk Down, even though it wouldn't be on my top 10, but The Hurt Locker can't be argued. It is top notch in every aspect.
All on this list are terrific war movies, no question. My own honorable mentions: The Longest Day (1962), Sink The Bismarck (1960) and Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970). Of these, I'm really surprised that Tora didn't make WatchMojo's list since it's considered one of the best depictions of the Pearl Harbor attack. It was actually made by three directors - Richard Fleischer handling the American sequences and two Japanese directors doing those parts of the film.
Enemy at the gates - We where soldiers - braveheart - the patriot - thin red Line- Full Metall Jacket - Memphis Belle - Where Eagles Dare - the longest day
@@blueeyeswhitedragon9839 Hacksaw Ridge was pretty well received. And, to be honest, We Were Soldiers in no way comes close to Top 10 when comparing it with the 15 or so films mentioned in this video.
My List: The Thin Red Line Saving Private Ryan Black Hawk Down The Longest Day Full Metal Jacket Das Boot Stalingrad (1993) American Sniper Lone Survivor Apocalypse Now Platoon Hamburger Hill We Were Soldiers Downfall Gettysburg
"12 O'clock High"..... A bit slow in parts, but a message that I took to be, if not anti-war, at least not pro-war. And one of Gregory Peck's best performances. And in glorious black and white.
BHD has flaws, mostly revolving around the storytelling getting clunky at times, many overly patriotic moments and one liners that end up being cheesy...its a fun film, i enjoy it, don't get me wrong, but it is not as good a film as many of the others on the list.
Gallipoli is an Aussie movie about the ANZACS (Australia, New Zealand Army Corps) & their real landing in Gallipoli. Not being an American movie wouldn't help, they need to make movies where Americans are the heroes, saving the world single handily while bullying allies into illegally invading & bombing any country they want & not for the reasons the US gives.
You missed a a lot. The Dirty Dozen, Where Eagles Dare, To Hell and Back, Sands of Iwo Jima, Kelly's Heroes, Force 10 from Navarone, The Longest Day.... This could have easily been a top 20.
bengalblitz: Nope. By today's standards, all of the movies you picked are completely out dated. Not even worthy of Honorable Mention. Yes, I enjoyed your picks as a boy, but we all have to go up some time.
By today's standards, you could classify them as classics but you cannot omit them. To omit something because the technology was not available back then is ludicrous and short-sighted. The Dirty Dozen won 4 awards including an Oscar and was nominated for 8; Sands of Iwo Jima was nominated for 4 Oscars, The Longest Day won 2 Oscars. Another 6 wins & 6 nominations. The rest were a star-studded class of exceptional actors. While we are at it, I'll throw in an argument for A Bridge to Far which won 3 BAFTA Film Awards. Another 4 wins & 4 nominations. Also Full Metal Jacket (Nominated for 1 Oscar. Another 7 wins & 9 nominations). How bout Midway, Tora, Tora, Tora, Battle of the Bulge...I could do this all day. Gonna hit the Netflix tonight for sure...
@@rossrallown5608 it's not about the battles. Watch Saving Private Ryan if you want realistic gore. The focus of Hacksaw Ridge is to tell the amazing and true story of Desmond Doss
You said it has to be a war movie where there is combat and yet you snuck movies like Bridge On The River Kwai and The Great Escape which had close to 0 combat on the list and yet threw Letters from Iwo Jima and Black Hawk Down as a honorable? Plus you mentioned Full Metal Jacket and that's it? Plus where's We Were Soldiers? At least if you want to talk about war movie, use something that's believable. You din't put Inglorious Bastards in because it's fictional and you think The Great Escape is true? You think the Japanese treated the British POWs well in Siam (Present-day Thailand)? No! How daft can you guys be!?!
The Great Escape used the idea of a real escape plan that was used by American, British and Canadian POW and they were 6-8 of them who thought of digging a tunnel through the toilet but they got caught and was all later shot. The Great Escape was an alternate scenario of the escape so why is it even on the list, I don't know.
Agreed. We were men left me shaking and an ex-soldier visited me and we watched it together and he said it was very harrowing. Lots of good films missing. The Last Samurai was again very moving, especially the last battle scene, it left me unable to talk for around 20 minutes after the first viewing. Likewise, Bridge and Escape included, yet Lawrence of Arabia was shown as a film that didn't qualify, because of the lack of battle scenes? It is has many battle scenes, certainly more than the two PoW films... How about Tora Tora Tora! The Cruel Sea, Enemy Below? There are dozens of worthy films out there. I agree with most of the selections, but I disagree with some. There were also no flyer films, of which there are many excellent ones. Southern Belle, Battle of Britain, Blue Max...
Peter Thooft The escape but not as flamboyant as the movie said it to be with flying Harley Davidson and such ridiculously low wall that a pig could even leap across it.
Speed Reaper You are quite correct as I pointed out No Americans even escaped in the Great Escape only the tunnel and the names of a few of the higher ups and some of the methods they used for diging the tunnels where correct the rest was filled in for entertainment purposes as seeing a bunch of people walking across Germany wouldn't make for much of a movie
I'll never forgive the Oscars for not giving Saving Private Ryan the award Best Picture. Not only is that the greatest war movie, it is one of the greatest movies ever made.
Amazing ain't it. SPR was a movie that almost everybody knew was gonna be remembered as the greatest war film ever made and that was the reaction many people had just from watching it once. It was just that brilliantly made. And yet, Shakespeare in Love was forgotten almost immediately. In the history of the Oscars I can't think of a bigger WTF moment than when SIL won best picture over SPR.
Customarily, the selection committee for Best picture award for the Oscar have always favors drama over action movies. SPR wasn't the first nor will be the last victim of that practice.
for a over patriotic american maybe but not for an objective international audiance. the opening was amazing but the absolutly illogical warherostory it became afterwards made the movie go from a 10 to an 8 or 7. There are many warmovies better than that weird american herostory at the end.
I thought the same exact thing with that movie, lol. I was however, a bit disappointed that Letters from Iwo Jima "merely" got an honorable mention. I thought that was more than well deserved for a spot on the top 10.
‘come and see’ is one of the most authentic and jaw-droppingly horrifying war movies i’ve ever seen- it was more than worthy to be on any good war movie list. a fantastic, yet terrifying film, simply fantastic.
No, the movie isn't anti-german. It shows what the nazis did in Belarus, and it's historical and important for the people to see what happened over there, because when WW2 is discussed, this country is rarely mentioned, and they went through their troubles. Just because a movie shows historical facts of the aggression of one country against another that doesn't mean that the people watching are against that country, specially after so many years. I am not anti-Germany. As an European I respect all countries. I don't like nazism, as many others don't.
no Das Boot or Stalingrad (1993)? All those movies are good, but in my opinion Das Boot was better then Hacksaw Ridge and on par with Saving Private Ryan
I think that you did a pretty good job with this list, but "The Hurt Locker" doesn't belong. I am an Iraq veteran. The idea that an EOD team would do anything other than EOD is foolish. They are an extremely valuable asset and are very well protected. They do not make their own missions, engage as a sniper team or (the best) pull on wires attached to explosives. The idea that war is a grand horror show and that there is a great deal of moral ambiguity on the battlefield is much better documented in other places. The complete lack of reality in that movie really took me out of it. And no, I have nothing against women directing any movies. Kathryn Bigelow appeared to do a great job in "Zero Dark Thirty" and "K-19," but as I am neither CIA or navy, I will not comment on their accuracy. Her movie "Near Dark" may be one of the absolute best horror movies ever made, and that is another genre not known as being dominated by women. By the way, Donald Pleasence from "The Great Escape," was an actual WW II British POW.
Have to agree though I've not had military experience ( my dad was both a Marine and a GI so he told me plenty of war stories he told me not to join up cause Vietnam was just Bullshit) somehow it didn't strike me a legitimate war film there was a similar film made back in the 50s name escapes me but it was pretty similar it dealt with men chosen to diffuse bombs after WW 2 PS I salute you for your service
The only reason "The Hurt Locker" got nominated and even won was because it was directed by a woman. It was the era of the "Me Too" movement It was a politically motivated choice.
I am not a veteran but three of my best friends are and all three served early in the Iraq War as well as Afghanistan later. We caught it in theaters and while watching I knew immediately how unrealistic it was as my buddies starting cracking up. When he grabs that barret I was like wait what? lmao. You just a sniper all of a sudden? The tugging on the wires to pull the explosives out of the ground was hilarious as well, that being said I love that movie. Its very entertaining and I do think it touched on some good psychological effects of being in situations like that. Obviously its much easier for someone like me to be entertained by it as I wasn't actually there but I totally get why actual veterans would not be able to sit through it. Thank you for your service!

@@christopherbodnar424 Battle of the Bulge was such a bad movie that Eisenhower came out of retirement to denounce it. Tora^3 and Longest Day absolutely should have been on the list.

"Enemy at the Gates" piece of shit! This film has fully demonstrated the degree of ignorance of the Western public about the war in the east. This film is a complete collection of Western myths about the war. It has everything, "human wave", "one rifle for three", "terrible NKVD agents" and absolute ignorance about personalities. For example: Khrushchev was a member of the military council, it's like the Commissar at the front commander. He did not have the power to dismiss the front commander.By the way, none of the commanders of the fronts around Stalingrad did not commit suicide. They were all alive until the end of war. Soviet soldiers had enough rifles, because only one factory in Izhevsk, produced 14 thousand rifles PER DAY, and still have plants in Tula, Kovrov and others. The most idiotic scene was about how the haracter of Joseph Fiennes wrote a denunciation of the girl, in which he accuses her of being Jewish (!) I wonder what would be done to him Lev Mehlis chief of all the commissars and a Jewish? State anti-Semitism in the USSR fiction Western propagandists.
Александр Соколов Interesting view. Nonetheless, its a very entertaining movie about horrors of war itself. Historical accuracy is not a priority for me, at least not in this case. If I wanted to know about the specific conflict, I would surely look deeper into it, probably read some well accepted article or a book.
Just watched Fury the whole way through last night! Great movie worthy of mentioning. Definitely drops you into a realistic theater of war and has historic accuracies!!

Fury and Hacksaw Ridge definitely belonged on this list, both brutalized and very real films based on real people and squads. Although both of them are fairly new, Fury has just as much if not more realism of battlefield injury than Saving Private Ryan, which is my favorite war film. Just realized that Hacksaw Ridge came out almost a month after you posted this video nvm.
Great movie. Leave it to Mel Gibson to make a harrowing film that's more than just action and death, although those are included. This list should have concentrated on particular wars and made several videos about each one. I've always been a revolutionary war buff, and would love to see a list on those films.

Saving Private Ryan is by far the best

Saving Private Ryan's opening scene gives me the chills, it honestly scared me the first time I watched it
Crazy too think that the only reason they managed to storm the beach was through the sheer volume of soldiers that were sacrificed

Some really were trash
Also Hacksaw ridge
Bc they go to "top best army movies" and read off someone elses shit they have no opinions idk why ppl r subbed to this shit youtube
BHD has flaws, mostly revolving around the storytelling getting clunky at times, many overly patriotic moments and one liners that end up being cheesy...its a fun film, i enjoy it, don't get me wrong, but it is not as good a film as many of the others on the list.
One of best WW2 movies is Guy Hamiltons Battle of Britain 1967. There was no cgi in those days Absolutely a Classic.

Gallipoli is an Aussie movie about the ANZACS (Australia, New Zealand Army Corps) & their real landing in Gallipoli. bengalblitz force ten is great
bengalblitz: Nope.
If they can add All's Quite and Paths of Glory even a Bridge Too Far which bombed at the box office these movies are outdated!

The great escape was based on a true event.

@Colonel Of the 82nd Airborne What do you mean? Soviet propaganda?
It's historical, and it's a very good movie, I don't think it's propaganda, and if that was it's purpose, I don't really care.

Zulu, King Rat, Enemy at the Gate, Battle of Britten, We Were Soldiers, Fury
Darren Doherty Fury was basically propaganda

I agree with most of your choices. You may have wanted to add, "Tora, Tora, Tora," which is historically accurate.
We We're Soldiers
damn auto correct! We were Soldiers.
It scored #10 on Top 10 Vietnam War Movies, so I didn't think it would be here. But I agree it should have been mentioned
Not idea why its voted so poorly. I personally think its one of the better Vietnam Movies.
the great escape reminds me of hogans heroes :D
i think i have seen das boot
zactly. 10 to 1 has it that Hogan's Heros was based directly on this movie. It was the funniest war comedy TV series EVAH!!
Fury and Hacksaw Ridge definitely belonged on this list, both brutalized and very real films based on real people and squads. Although both of them are fairly new, Fury has just as much if not more realism of battlefield injury than Saving Private Ryan, which is my favorite war film. Just realized that Hacksaw Ridge came out almost a month after you posted this video nvm.
wrong
my top 5:
1. paths of glory
2. all quiet on the western front
3. come and see
4. the bridge on the river Kwai
5. the great escape
we were soldiers.
Great movie. Leave it to Mel Gibson to make a harrowing film that's more than just action and death, although those are included. This list should have concentrated on particular wars and made several videos about each one. I've always been a revolutionary war buff, and would love to see a list on those films.
Apocalypse Now is a masterpiece
Change my mind
The first hour was excellent. The last hour outstanding. It was the 13 or 14 hours separating them which let it down for me
@@iansmith3457 The film is only 2 hours 30 minutes! 😅 Unless you're referring to the Director's Cut?
To hell and back, red badge of courage, casualties of war, U571, Hacksaw Ridge, and Sgt York were all good war movies too
Apocalypse now is not only the greatest war movie of all time but also one of the greatest MOVIES in world cinema
