      Just to re-iterate, Robert was the only person who I felt really clearly explained the difference between midi and audio tracks as well as how to effectively make loops from recordings, samples or your instruments, as well as using inputs/outputs to their fuller potential by routing multiple devices, I have watched and read a ton lately and this was the one that cracked it for me, thanks again!

    • @homeone4054

      @trinity9704 ...that is the easiest way to use Cakewalk. I have, alternately, been told on the Cakewalk forum that Cakewalk can do everything othet DAWs can. Then, that it is designed for "traditional" recording methods i.e. not loop or sample based recording.
      I certainly cannot find the same functions in Cakewalk as exist in Ableton such as the simpler/sampler.
      The loop editing window in Ableton is also so easy to use. I would genuinely love to use the Matrix in Cakewalk in the same way I have used scenes in Ableton. However, Ableton has the awesome ability to make all sorts of samples, audio and midi clips to play in time with each other and to adjust the project tempo. I have tried and failed to create loops/samples in Cakewalk as I can't work out how to edit them accurately enough.

    Although some of the moves went by a little fast to grok on the first pass they can, obviously, be repeated until greater understanding is achieved. In some ways, just introducing what is possible is almost as valuable as showing exactly how to accomplish the task.

    Most MIDI controllers can switch MIDI channel on the fly. As such, it's a smoother workflow to set each instrument to its own MIDI channel. No need to disable / enable MIDI input each time you record. Even record multiple instruments in one go, switching MIDI channel as you play.

  • @synopticdesigns7868
    @synopticdesigns7868 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Along with Creative Sauce and HRS Courses, your videos are the most informative on the topic of Cakewalk by Bandlab. One topic that I haven't seen covered is MIDI FX. Unlike VST instruments and FX it appears that Cakewalk can only use DirectX MIDI FX. That includes the various MIDI FX can come with Cakewalk. I also have a third-party MIDI FX called Ntonxy Style Enhancer MIcro that is DirectX and is recognized by Cakewalk as a MIDI effect. Unfortunately, there are dozens of free VST MIDI FX available with interesting capabilities but none of those are recognized by Cakewalk as a MIDI FX. If scanned by Cakewalk some are recognized as VST instruments, which doesn't do any good. I assume that other DAW's can recognize and use VST MIDI FX.

    • @Homestudiosimplifed

      Whoa!? I never even knew about that! I’m not a big time MIDI user, but I can see how that would be frustrating.

    If you want the shaker audio to conform to tempo changes, you need to turn on Groove clip, right?

    • @Homestudiosimplifed
      @Homestudiosimplifed  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a couple of ways to do this.
      1) Hold CTRL+SHIFT and stretch the edge of the audio to the grid
      2) Select the audio clip(s) that you want to follow the project tempo. Press ALT+A to open the AudioSnap palette. Click the "Clip Follows Project Tempo" button on the AudioSnap palette. The clip will now be synchronized to the project’s tempo map.

    In fact creating loops which work in time with tracks is still baffling.
    And what on earth is a "slice"? I have read the manual but nowhere does it actually describe what slicing audio does or means or why I may want to do it. I really do tear my ever greying hair out more and more using this. No wonder there is another DAW called Logic...let's hope it is good to its name. Cakewalk and me are not getting along.

    • @Homestudiosimplifed
      @Homestudiosimplifed  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Home One I understand your confusion. Slice is simply making an “incision” where your transport marker is so that you can separate the single piece of audio into two. Once it’s move the information still remains there to drag from the edges.
      If you’re heavily into loop based music I would give Abelton live a go.

    • @electronicexposure
      @electronicexposure 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Logic will take you longer to learn than Cakewalk or Ableton. And they can all do similar things, sounds like you might benefit from FL Studio or Ableton.

    • @homeone4054
      @homeone4054 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Homestudiosimplifed Hey Robert thanks for your reply. I have given Ableton a trial and it definitely seems to me at least that it facilitates creating loops, and editing of loops to keep them in time, in a much more user friendly way than Cakewalk. I found with Ableton it was much easier to edit and get midi clips and audio clips to play in time with each other. Thay said I still think Cakewalk's VSTs and effects/mixing capabilities/sound and mastering quality are first class. Much better than Ableton in my view thus far.
      I also now understand what slices are. The Ableton simpler/sampler is great for understanding and manipulating this in a logical way. I am told that Cakewalk can do everything other DAWs can, but it seems it's not so obvious to users unless you have been a previous user of Sonar for years. Incidentally I have been using Sonar/Cakewalk for about 3 years and still rely on your videos to get me back on track!
