    Making Christmas ornaments is one of my favorite parts of Christmas, guess what I'll be adding this year! Thank you for taking the time to make this video!

    Great ornament! The burning really makes this look amazing. Every year I have ships crashing into my tree and now I finally know how to prevent it. :)

      Excellent! I've had the same problem ... I live in Atlanta,Georgia, and the ships coming through are a huge nuisance. The lighthouse ornaments have been a godsend.

    Hi Rick! Very nice Lighthouse Ornament! I really liked the idea of the burning and defining the lines with the grove. Best! Daniel

    Nifty little project. I live close to the sea in Nova Scotia, Canada. The government is getting rid of all of our beautiful lighthouses. Perhaps I can "turn the tides".

    Well Rick, you got my attention. Nice job on the light house. Do you ever paint them as well?
    Thanks, like to watch you work.

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning
      @RickTurnsWoodturning  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I haven't tried painting them. That would take too much time. With the Christmas ornaments, I aim to turn and finish the ornament very quickly, like 20 minutes or so, because I usually make 6-10 at a time. I did try using red aniline dye on one (the red banded one in the picture), but it tinted the whole thing pink when I put on the finish (and that was after drying overnight, which I normally avoid). I might revisit that sometime, by putting on the dye, then putting finish only on top of the dye, and letting that dry. That might seal the dye and prevent it from bleeding.

    I will try and send a picture of the light house I made from your pattern and technique. I did use a magic marker on the bands. It did bleed some,but, I put a small groove in the edges so it was minimal. Came out ok, I think.

    Thank you for the education and creative ideas. Could you please provide the name again of the pins used and supplier for the light and other applications. Again thank you and Merry Christmas.

      Hi, David. The lighthouses are my favorites. I bought map pins from Amazon. I think it was this one: Amazon Basics Push Pins Map Tacks, Plastic Head, Steel Point, Assorted Colors, 100-Pack. But it’s been a long time and I’m not dead sure. These have heads that are less than a quarter inch which sounds about right.

      I believe I was using red dye. The burn lines stopped the dye from seeping and spreading. Thanks for watching.

    Mr. Turns, Thank You Sir for sharing this wonderful lighthouse plan. It has been 3 years today since you posted it and I see from the comments you are still getting well deserved fan mail. If you still monitor this particular video I hope you can answer a question for me. You mentioned 3 parts shellac to 1 part alcohol. Are you referring to denatured alcohol or plain old isopropyl alcohol? Please forgive my ignorance. Thanks in advance!
    John Archer

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning
      @RickTurnsWoodturning  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for those nice comments, John. I use denatured alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol does not work as well (I tried it). Since that video, I have gone to the more standard mixture for friction polish of one part shellac, one part denatured alcohol, and one part boiled linseed oil. I have done several videos on friction polish. Here's a couple of links: th-cam.com/video/fODxyikTrFA/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/LN3XO91iRuM/w-d-xo.html. I hope those videos will help you.

    Thanks for this! Off to buy some map pins! What do you use for the snowman eyes and mouth?

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning
      @RickTurnsWoodturning  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Donald. For the snowmen, I use a woodburner to burn on the eyes, mouth, nose, and other stuff.
