Lol .. thank you Gary, I appreciate that. Bob is sorely missed by many, and I assure you he was a far more talented individual than I could ever hope to be :) Take care Mike
There again Mike, absolutely beautiful. Your original design was awesome, but you used the design op for an even better ornament. Thank you for sharing with us, good luck in the challenge and Thank you for the honor of your shout out to me.
Thanks Stephen, I always appreciate your support, and above all the shout out was much deserved my friend, your entry is simply "awesome". Take care Mike
Hello Mike from 🇨🇦. Yes this video is 5 years old but I still like to come back and watch it . You make it look so easy. And I KNOW IT IS NOT. You inspire me as a very new turner to go out in my cold garage and try to make one of these. Thanks for all your instructional videos you produce for us out here in TH-cam LAND . And as you say. Cheers
Cool calm and collected Mr Waldt. The wood contrast looks awesome, I have never tried lime for turning, only basic carving, will be having a go soon. Thank you for your time and effort once again.
Mike a beautiful piece. Your choice of woods, finish and design bestows a truly classic look to the ornament. I think you will find this one becoming an heirloom in your family. Thanks for showing us how you made it. Rick
Mike Nicely done. I think that leaving in the little "oops" and fixing it with the jam chuck was done very well and you showed that such a mishap is not the end. I think it is really important to leave these accidents in our videos, at least once in a while. (I have had my share of disasters) I like to say that what makes us better woodworkers or woodturners are those mistakes that we must fix. And you turned a beautiful ornament. Thanks for posting. Sam
Leaving the accidents teach us to things that we really need to learn. One of them is that we are normal when we see that the best even have mishaps. The other thing is showing us different methods and techniques to reenter the piece back into the to production phase and keep going. You guys are all an inspiration to so many
Challenge winner or not, that's a beautiful ornament Mike. I love the design, even before I saw how it came to be. Very nice save by the way. Thanks for sharing it with the rest of us. Have a great day, Fred
As normal you have produced a lovely end product Mike. The combination of woods is great. With the design change it makes yours more unique than others in the competition!
Beautiful ornament, Mike. Great save after the hollowing!!!! Nothing like a design opportunity to keep the old mental faculties working at their best. Merry Christmas, Mike!!! Thanks for sharing this, .....Gord
Beautiful, beautiful and then some more! so much to learn, so much to do! if it was me cutting through a form like this you would have seen me chuck it over my shoulder right into the "what to do with these next?" pile, just out of mire! I should learn from you not just the skill of work and design, but also the temper and state of mind.
Nice save Mike, and another lovely turning. You guys make finial turning look so easy that I have to give it a go soon. Take care, and keep up the great vids. ... Steve
Quite lovely, the color combinations really compliment each other. The way you fixed the set back of blowing thru is a testament to the level of turner that you are. Always an inspiration. Good luck with the challenge. Take care, David
Loved this video and was pleased to see that better people than myself can make mistakes. Oh sorry we dont make mistakes do we only adjustments to the original plan. A perfect rescue and a fine result. Regards David. DK.
I love it and so do my kids. I'm going to get them to make something similar for their grandparents for this Christmas. Thank you for sharing. I think some cherry and wenge and maybe a little purple heart. Maybe I'll get them their own channels and see what they can do.....with a little help.
Hello Mike, Beautiful turning resulting in a stunning ornament. I've turned some lime in the past and it's a joy to work with. Also, I've been trying to master texturing and spiralling and found that it doesn't work with all woods but lime gives a great result. Best wishes, Alan.
Hi Mike Your video's certainly help us novices and it's good to see that it can go wrong for an expert. I turn Christmas trees of all different sizes smallest 2 1/2" largest 24". After seeing your video I certainly want to have a go at this type of Christmas Ornament. Thanks Mike The Woodturning Beekeeper
Very nice Mike! I felt bad that you went through, I sure seem to have a lot of design change opportunities, but I'm having a blast. Thanks for the video. Mark
thats a real beauty! turned out great Mike! maybe the little "mis hab" did some good in the end..idk im no turner but i do wanna try and turn something like this for my mother for Christmas gift.thanks for sharing this 🖒🖒🎄

Good save Mike, I didn't think I would like a long finial on the top but it works well and the ornament will look great as a single decoration. Great work. Best Wishes, Brendan.
Great ornament Mike, don't know if I will bother putting one in now LOL. I can;t believe that was a save? it looked far to good to me, when I have a problem it becomes food for the wood burner :-) All the best Tony
A beautiful ornament Mike! I turn one every year for my granddaughter, and put a little dated love note inside the globe for her to read someday when I am just a memory for her. In reference to your design change: it's only a mistake if you can't fix it. Great work, as usual.
Thanks for answering, I'm from Spain, and my English is almost nil, I write through translator goglee, I'm starting to turning, I learn a lot with you, I built my own lathe, when preparing the video I'll put greetings.
I was just about to comment on your use of the spindle gouge and hollowing your ornament, but you stopped me in my tracks when you went a little too far, lol, Even the pros can get a little over zealous at times. Your work never ceases to amaze me. Not only are you particular about your workshop , but also the projects you make. Best of luck.....Stevie

Seems to be the season of redesigns Mike, I blew the base out of mine too by being over zealous !!! Nice save though young man. Mine turned into an 'arty piece', still no matter I'll try again. Thanks for sharing. Regards ..... Geof
Good to see how that is done rough shaping and drying the wood. I always wondered what everyone did to dry the green wood for the bowl or platter or any other rough turning green wood. I would imagine you would do the same if rough shaping wood for turning a box ? or do you just let the wood dry naturally and then turn the box from dry wood ? Thanks for your great vids I watch them all.
Looks great Mike. At the 11:36 mark your left thumb is near the joint where the base of the top finial joins the top of the globe portion. Below the top finial there is a small band of white then a dark line or accent band. Can you tell me how you did the darker accent band. Thank you for your time. I know the video is 3-4 years old but the ornament is great. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours Mike! Ron
Hi Ron and thank you. I cut a narrow groove with a skew chisel, and burnt the wood in the groove with a thin piece of "Formica". A belated merry Christmas to you and your family too my friend. Cheers Mike
That's a really beautiful piece Mikey. Oh and I'm sure you heard me laugh when you went through the bottom. I have a walnut bowl on the lathe at the moment that I went through the bottom. No joke. Going to be a clock now. Oh and did I say humbug matey? You are the poster child for Mr. Scrooge. Hope all its well......
Tom Wilcox Thanks Tom, if you hadn't laughed I'd have been upset mate. By the way, great shame about your holey bowl -NOT! You could always use it for thick soup or something....lol Keep well ol' buddy Mike
Mike, thanks for the video. Now I see why you ended up with a wide hole in one end. I would laugh but I have gown thru to many bottoms myself (lol). I have you considered making a small hollowing tool out of an Allen key wrench. I believe Sam Angelo (wyomingwoodturner) shows some tools like this and they say they are great for ornaments.
Hi Mike !! Nice job on the xmas ornament, its funny how a mistake can sometimes end up giving you a better design. I liked the wider base to the top finnial. Did you use a wire to burn the ring detail in the lime ? Great vid as always!! Take care...........Andy.
Hello Mr Waldt, I find the top finial a bit too long but overall this rnament is beautiful !!! I wish I could work as finely and calmly as you (most of the time when I get too much catches or something goes wrong, I leave everything on the spot and go for a walk to calm down [it usually takes me around 1h30]). And I don't often comment on your videos but I follow you regularly and Your videos are very inspiring !!! Merry Christmas to you and your family !!! Take care, Morgan
Morgan Devillaine Hi Morgan, and thank you very much for your kind words, and support, they are both much appreciated. Also, glad you like the piece, well nearly ;) Take care Mike
Sorry for the late reply but I had troubles with my ISP... Looks like you ot me wrong: I love this ornament !!! It is just that the top finial is a bit too long to MY taste (maybe I am a bit too "classical" with this). And I wish I could turn some finials like those (and with such beautiful woods). And I really appreciate your work: you teach us a lot of things and techniques with simple words and show us that we can make beautiful pieces too. Merry Christmas, Morgan
Morgan Devillaine Hi again Morgan, I didn't take your comment the wrong way I assure you. I welcome honest comments, and that is what yours was, and for that I thank you. If everyone liked the same thing, this would be a very boring world, don't you think :). Once more I'd like to thank you for your very kind words. A very Merry Christmas to you and your family. Take care Mike
Oh yes it would be a so boring world if everyone had same tastes... Again thank you for your nice words and your kindness, Mr Waldt. And once more, have a happy Christmas with yours !!! Morgan
Beauty there, Mike. Spot on! A question on the glue block: I note you have a series of concentric rings penciled in on the block. May I assume that is for determining the optimal position for the glue vs. the object to be glued?
Thanks a lot i appreciate your video , but can you told me what you used to finish your wood the color is so beautiful thanks and have a MERRY CHRISTMAS
Hi Mike, even if you have passed the "misfortune", sees the ornament super aus.Vielleicht should you pass the mishap, so you may another part turning. It also looks super good, as if it should be so. :-D Greetings from Germany
I join with the others in giving the stub up (or thumb up with the left hand). You didn't share how you darkened the detail grove on the top? Nevertheless a great video.
Lol Earl and thank you. Sorry about the line burning, very remiss of me my friend......I used Formica to burn in the groove I made with the skew. take care Mike
A nice piece again there Mike. I love how the 2 woods compliment each other! I'd love to know where you get your Purple Heart wood from? As you know, I'm not that far away from you, so if you're buying it local maybe I'll have to get some! ;-)
I didn't see anything happen... lol Anyway, that's one beautiful ornament Mike! It's amazing how much your "detail ring" adds to the piece. I keep forgetting to add that element to my design. Did you burn that in with wire? As always, enjoy your videos my friend. Kevin
Kevin Krull I Kevin, and thank you. I use "Formica" for detail lines on awkward area like this, where a wire would be almost impossible to use. hope your well. A belated Happy New Year as well my friend :) Take care Mike
Hi Tom, my advice is just be yourself, and try and keep the videos around 15 to 20 minutes max, unless it's a tutorial, even then if it is too long people , naturally will lose interest. I forever fight my second thoughts, and third and fourth, regarding editing ;) Sorry I'm not more help. Take care, and good luck Mike PS - Be sure to let me know when your first video is up :)
Who was doing that beautiful guitar work? Thanks for the stunning Christmas ornament. Good positive adaptive thinking when things went a bit awry. It's turning into the merry month of May, if I make a start now I might be ready for Christmas 2017. This year it's Sputnik Sea Shell ornaments. Brad
A very nice ornament Mike. We all know that wasn't really a mistake that you intended to do it that way all along! 😀 Thanks for the video. May I ask where you got the tool that attaches to your parting for turning a specific tenon size?
Mike Waldt Yes sorry about that Mike. I think maybe it was a Jimson video where he uses a parting tool that has something attached to it for sizing tenons. I just watched your video again and realized I mixed them up. Thanks for clarifying for me. 👍
I have to say that this is my all time favourite video of yours Mike. This is where I gotten inspiration to try a couple hollowed pieces with a spindle gouge. Question for you; when you were turning the bottom finial and went to make the tenon to fit in, you had some tearout from the parting tool. I get that occasionally. Any idea what causes that?
Hi Corey, and thank you. It comes with the territory when using a parting tool I feel. However, if you "plunge" cut first this reduces, and even can eliminate the small amount of tear out. Here's a link to a video which shows this very well, watch from 1.14 if that's all you want to see, but the whole video is well worth a watch. th-cam.com/video/sQ6Mxhzy0OA/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps a bit Cheers Mike
Mike...Your turning is Awesome! I really like the combination of woods as they contrast well with each other and really enhance the final turning! Always a wonder to see 'professional' turners like you make a mistake like we 'novices' do and then capitalize on the error... Makes us feel better and learn new techniques to recover from an issue...or did you PLAN it that way? ;>) Anywho, I really enjoyed your turning as always and wish you a wonderful and very merry Christmas! Safe turning to you always!
Thanks Kenn, your kind words are very much appreciated. Of course, all my design changes, and there are many, are ALWAYS planned......lol. Take care Moike
You are the Bob Ross of woodturning! Turned that happy accident into a beautiful piece! Pretty amazing!
Lol .. thank you Gary, I appreciate that. Bob is sorely missed by many, and I assure you he was a far more talented individual than I could ever hope to be :)

A good turner is NOT one who never makes a mistake; a good turner is one who can turn his mistake into a master piece...👍👍👍
Thanks for that Edward much appreciated.

Cheers
Mike
oh wow that is amazing, good luck.
Thank you
Cheers
Mike
I really like how the "save" turned out. At first I was thinking that you would just make it to be a bell.
Thanks I appreciate your supportive comment.

You could always use it for thick soup or something....lol
Keep well ol' buddy
Mike
Great work thanks for sharing

Mike
Really good hope you win 1st place
Thanks Curtis, no chance there my friend, there are some stunning pieces this year, that are far and away more deserving.

Mike
educational and a beatiful result. nice to see one thats not base on a ball.
Thanks Willem, my original thoughts were "round", but then I thought............
Cheers
Mike
Mike, thanks for the video. Now I see why you ended up with a wide hole in one end. I would laugh but I have gown thru to many bottoms myself (lol). I have you considered making a small hollowing tool out of an Allen key wrench. I believe Sam Angelo (wyomingwoodturner) shows some tools like this and they say they are great for ornaments.
Thanks Mark, when I get some time I will knock up a few Alan wrench hollowers I'm sure. Thanks for the tip though.

Mike
Hi Mike !!
Nice job on the xmas ornament, its funny how a mistake can sometimes end up giving you a better design.
I liked the wider base to the top finnial.
Did you use a wire to burn the ring detail in the lime ?
Great vid as always!!
Take care...........Andy.
Thanks Andy, I used a small piece of Formica on this one, wire would be difficult on this sort of position.

Mike
Hello Mr Waldt,
I find the top finial a bit too long but overall this rnament is beautiful !!!
Take care,
Morgan
Morgan Devillaine Hi Morgan, and thank you very much for your kind words, and support, they are both much appreciated. Also, glad you like the piece, well nearly ;)

Mike
Sorry for the late reply but I had troubles with my ISP...
Looks like you ot me wrong: I love this ornament !!!
It is just that the top finial is a bit too long to MY taste (maybe I am a bit too "classical" with this).
And I wish I could turn some finials like those (and with such beautiful woods).
And I really appreciate your work: you teach us a lot of things and techniques with simple words and show us that we can make beautiful pieces too.
Merry Christmas,
Morgan
Morgan Devillaine Hi again Morgan, I didn't take your comment the wrong way I assure you. I welcome honest comments, and that is what yours was, and for that I thank you. If everyone liked the same thing, this would be a very boring world, don't you think :).
Once more I'd like to thank you for your very kind words.
A very Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Take care
Mike
Oh yes it would be a so boring world if everyone had same tastes...
Again thank you for your nice words and your kindness, Mr Waldt.
And once more, have a happy Christmas with yours !!!
Morgan
Beauty there, Mike. Spot on! A question on the glue block: I note you have a series of concentric rings penciled in on the block. May I assume that is for determining the optimal position for the glue vs. the object to be glued?
Thanks John, and you may assume correctly about the pencil lines, a tip on one of Carl's videos a long time ago :)
Take care
Mike
it turned out very well
Thank you Trevor
Cheers
Mike
Thanks a lot i appreciate your video , but can you told me what you used to finish your wood the color is so beautiful thanks and have a MERRY CHRISTMAS
The wood is Purple Heart, and the finish is a wax, thank you also.
We will let you claim this was an accident this one time. Beautiful!
Lol Billy, and thank you my friend.
Cheers
Mike
Hi Mike,
even if you have passed the "misfortune", sees the ornament super aus.Vielleicht should you pass the mishap, so you may another part turning. It also looks super good, as if it should be so. :-D
Greetings from Germany
Thank you Gunter

I join with the others in giving the stub up (or thumb up with the left hand). You didn't share how you darkened the detail grove on the top? Nevertheless a great video.
Lol Earl and thank you. Sorry about the line burning, very remiss of me my friend......I used Formica to burn in the groove I made with the skew.

Mike
A nice piece again there Mike. I love how the 2 woods compliment each other!
I'd love to know where you get your Purple Heart wood from? As you know, I'm not that far away from you, so if you're buying it local maybe I'll have to get some! ;-)
Thank Keith, maybe you will mate ;). I'll get in touch in a few days my friend.
Take care
Mike
I didn't see anything happen... lol Anyway, that's one beautiful ornament Mike! It's amazing how much your "detail ring" adds to the piece. I keep forgetting to add that element to my design. Did you burn that in with wire?
As always, enjoy your videos my friend.
Kevin
Kevin Krull I Kevin, and thank you. I use "Formica" for detail lines on awkward area like this, where a wire would be almost impossible to use. hope your well.
A belated Happy New Year as well my friend :)
Take care
Mike
I am trying to start filming for youtube shortly, have you any tips on starting up mate. regards, Tom.
Hi Tom, my advice is just be yourself, and try and keep the videos around 15 to 20 minutes max, unless it's a tutorial, even then if it is too long people , naturally will lose interest. I forever fight my second thoughts, and third and fourth, regarding editing ;)
Sorry I'm not more help.
Take care, and good luck
Mike
PS - Be sure to let me know when your first video is up :)
love the video! Could i ask who the cover of no woman no cry was? so nice!

Thanks Jake, all the guitar is by Michael Berk...the link is in the description.

Mike
Who was doing that beautiful guitar work? Thanks for the stunning Christmas ornament. Good positive adaptive thinking when things went a bit awry. It's turning into the merry month of May, if I make a start now I might be ready for Christmas 2017. This year it's Sputnik Sea Shell ornaments. Brad

A very nice ornament Mike. We all know that wasn't really a mistake that you intended to do it that way all along! 😀 Thanks for the video.
May I ask where you got the tool that attaches to your parting for turning a specific tenon size?
Thank you Ron, I think you mean the vernier gauge that I used to check the tenon size...is that right?
Cheers
Mike
Mike Waldt Yes sorry about that Mike. I think maybe it was a Jimson video where he uses a parting tool that has something attached to it for sizing tenons. I just watched your video again and realized I mixed them up. Thanks for clarifying for me. 👍
Nice ornament Mike, what kind of finish did you apply?
Steve Hoppe thanks Steve, just my usual - 2 of sanding sealer mix, followed by 2 of WoodWax 22.
Cheers
Mike

Hope this helps a bit

Take care
