I had some ideas about doing a Yhorm remix for a little while now, and then recently I started to talk to Lindsay (links to her in the description). She is a really talented composer and we thought it might be fun to write something together. We really liked the idea of doing a waltz, and obviously we had to do something with Dark Souls; Yhorm really fit the bill. We started coming up with some ideas that just grew and grew, and we ended up with this massive piece! It's sort of a song that tells a story- we were thinking about Yhorm's lore: the tragedy and hardships he went through. This song tells that story in a way. Just beautiful, people may crap on Yhorm but it's for all the wrong reasons. he's one of my favorite bosses in terms of lore, ost and just plain hype. This really does compliment his lore very well and it's so different from his original theme but I good kind of different.Very well done.

Deep below the Tyrannical kingdom of Irithyll, beyond the oppressive Dungeon lies a shell, a faint ruin of a once proud capital. A capital of spoils and gold but with a deep shame amongst its people. You see, a great conqueror descended upon the sorry fools and enslaved the capital, crushing their proud kings crown, grinding it to dust to form the conquerors own mighty crown. The conqueror however, disappeared, perhaps...enveloped by an inky abyss from which he would never return. As a result; the capital was free, however, the people were fearful of being re-conquered so they did something most shameful. They asked for the conquerors decendant; a lowly giant, a hated being, a dull race to rule in place. They felt no pride for their might lord, despite his immense loyalty to his ungrateful subjects. In result, the brave giant grew bitter and felt disrespected; he called them out on their cowardly words and gave them his weakness; a sword that fells giants. However the people felt no pride for their lord and through this, the giant grew distant and became a lord of Cinder. But this did not appease his subjects, no, instead the inhabitants were scorched to cinders, he failed. Now, at worlds end. Yhorm, the lonely giant sits in the ruins of his capital, waiting for the day, an old friend would finally keep a promise made to him. ‘’Let the Sun shine upon this Lord of Cinder’’

This middle part is more of him loosing his hope and giving everything up, thus creating profaned flame and coming to third part as lord if cinder with only mahete left waiting for siegward to uphold his promise
So, for fun, I decided to put this on while I fought Yhorm. And the result was WAY better than I could have imagined. The fight started out simple. I used the Sellsword Twinblades and slowly whittled away at him. As the fight dragged on, the music enters the Epilogue, became softer and quieter. And then, right as the music begins picking up again as Yhorm's theme begins to reenter, I stagger Yhorm and riposte him, stabbing him in the head. Immediately, I sheathed my Twinblades (which were in the left slot) and gripped the Storm Ruler tightly with both hands. And as the music reached its climax, I unleashed Storm Ruler's power repeatedly, until both Yhorm and the music faded together.... Really upset I wasn't able to record this and edit the music in....
I just did it with the firelight greatsword and did as you suggested and yeah it was really impactful to the boss fight, really felt like a story being told In a way.
Yhorm's story is just depressing. The guy fights for his people just to be distained by them, loses the only person he loves, sacrifices his body and soul for the people who didn't even like him and in the end none of it even mattered. I mean damn, can't blame him for not wanting to link the fire after shit like that.
Hearing Yhorm’s theme this way is truly heartbreaking, but in such a great way... When I originally played Dark Souls 3, I loved Yhorm’s theme because of how grand and epic the piece was, you were fighting a giant Lord of Cinder, after all, why wouldn’t it be grand and epic? I didn’t know that much about the lore back then and never had Seigward to join me in the fight, so it remained just a badass song to fight Yhorm to. Now that it’s several years later and I’m much more versed in the lore, this song practically tells Yhorm’s story through the sheer emotion, and adding onto heartbreak now knowing that Seigward joins you in the battle, and says that unforgettable line, "Yhorm, old friend. I, Siegward of Catarina, have come to uphold my promise…” It’s no longer a battle against a Lord of Cinder to progress through the game, it’s the culmination of helping this humble knight carry on through his own quest, reuniting with his old friend, a once great and caring Lord turned corrupt, to uphold his promise and finally put the Lord to rest. This piece really captures that dreadful and heart-wrenching feeling of the battle alongside Seigward, a humble and jolly onion knight, against such a massive opponent, who might not even remember his old friend anymore. I don’t know if you still read these comments, but thank you, Alex, for this horrifying, melancholy, and yet so encouraging and powerful composition.
Siegward, old friend of mine... thou camest to fulfill thine promise. I’m so grateful. I hope we will meet once again...thou know’st, I miss those...far days...where we met at the highest tower of the castle....drinking thine so delicious brew...facing the sun. Now let this Lord of Cinder fall. I shall not forget what we have been through...thank to thee.
I wonder what was he thinking when he linked the fire... maybe he was wondering how could such a tiny flame keep the entire light of the world alive, while himself, a giant, could not protect his people. May the sun shine forever upon this Lord of Cinder.
+Artek [General] Maybe it's better that we never find out, for what more can be derived from this beyond what we already know? Yhorm is broken, putting a face behind his loss may bring more character to his story arc, but ultimately it won't change his ending.
Imagine a dark souls game based off the story of one of the bosses in the series, yhorm would be a good one but I think abyss watchers or Hawkeye would be better
Nothing is as relaxing as settling down with a nice cup o' coffee, turning on some Alex Roe, and playing through Dark Souls for the four-hundredth time.
He tried to protect his people, but when he wake up only death and destruction was around him. And now he awaits in his trone, to see the promise of a dear old friend fulfilled and his final wish granted.
Mr R2 Considering how he attacks siegward... Not sure he is of sound mind enough to wait for anyone. Although if he was, it could’ve been really cool if somehow Siegward’s quest had been appropriately hard, and not... random hard, so that they could‘ve made the fight just be Yhorm approaching Siegward slowly, falling to his knees and letting siegward kill him. So make Siegward’s quest hard enough that the player wouldn’t feel cheated when Yhorm just committed suicide, in essence. But of course Yhorm is nowhere near this rational, so he just attacks anyone and everyone, hence the true reason why Siegward kills him.
I can't get the mental image of Siegward and Yhorm dancing together to this under a spotlight in Yhorm's boss chamber out of my head. Thank you for this.
Unlike other games, Dark Souls isn't really based on a protagonist trying to save their world, it's a prolonged story of tragedy and enlightenment. Of misery and pleasure, a story of freedom and slavery. Dark Souls isn't just a game, it describes the meaning of true pain.
I can picture fighting a younger yhorm to this, with him using both his greatshield and machete. At least the shield could block Storm Ruler that way...
what if you became the reason he threw away his shield? in the fight you'd probably end up killing the one he wanted to protect. it'll be like dark souls 2, where you defeat the giant lord of the past and meet him again in your own time, to finish him off
The reason I love this score a lot more is the fact that it syncs with Yhorm's actual story lore and the things he went through. While listening to this music, imagine seeing Yhorm being rejected by the people of the profaned capital, all except for one, and as he begins to grow in strength and show his greatness in war, but also being a great protector for those who fought behind him. And so he earns the peoples respect as he fights to greatness, but ultimately doomed as he failed to protect someone he loved. Now the tone changes, imagine Yhorm weeping and mourning the loss of this person he loved, the people of the profaned capital, and his loyal friend saddened by their lords sorrow. Yhorm suffers depression and feels of a failure because he failed to protect his loss. Ultimately feeling rage and disgust for himself. Enraged, he casts his great shield to the floor with a thunderous force, stomping off to accept his duty as a Lord of Cinder before going to rest his undead soul. Once more though, with the change of music, Yhorm rises like in the intro cutscene, the people of the profaned capital turn against him to put the giant lord to rest, but were no match and ultimately reduced to the molten piles of flesh we see in the capital. Now he rests on his throne until the Ashen one and Siegward step through, and the final battle engages. Ending with Yhorm's Death, and now, thanks to Siegward and the Ashen one, Yhorm may rest at last. The music captures this theme of his tragedies and greatness all at once and is a well composed piece all together. And because it captures the emotion so well, I love this track a great deal more.
don't wanna be that guy, but Yhorm wasn't responsible for the deaths of his capital, it's the profaned flame that killed all of them and it kind of looks as if they all desperately rushed towards the throne room as if they were hoping he would be there to protect them, but Yhorm was in the Kiln Of The First Flame. The story seems even more tragic because he manages to come home years later only to find out that his kingdom was burnt to the ground T_T
Taha Iftikhar What source gives you the idea that the profaned flame was the cause of their deaths? To me, I always asked what happened to all those burned and melted corpses in the capital, and thought that because Yhorm went hostile after awakening, he destroyed them all with his lord of cinder fires. What source points blame to the profaned flame? And remind me, what is the profaned flame?
+Jason Alcatraz it's the corrupting force that turned the lords of cinder into hostile, monstrous beings, and the reason pontiff sulyvahn mutated his subjects, he was trying to harness it, hence the "profaned greatsword." it killed yhorm's people because he tried to become a lord to extinguish it, and failed.

Lothric chose to avoid the linking of fire The Abyss watchers were corrupted via the abyss Aldrich is just a prick And Yhorm seems like he's just ready to die in battle. Pontiff mutated his subjects purely for power. In essence, he's the main antagonist of Dark Souls 3. I still don't know if I believe the idea that the profamed flame killed Yhorms people, but that's mostly because I don't know much about the profamed flame.
Like you said in your commentary, i adore how this song tells a story, yhorm's story, all of his journey, his hardships, him trying his best to be a king for the people who resented him, a proud and ferocious warrior, but with a heart of gold, a giant who lost someone really important to him, abandoning the once giant shield he wore in battle. Befriending a proud knight of catarina, who once made him a promise he intended to fullfil. Despite his loyalty to his people, they still held no respect for the giant, who gave them the only thing that could truly kill him, a sword that controlled storms and felled giants, as a way of telling his subjects to claim his life if they despised him so much. They didn't, and yhorm lived another day, becoming a lord of cinder. But that act was the downfall of the once great capital, scorched to cinders, all of yhorm's subjects died, and the whole city was set ablaze. He had failed. But when everything looked grim, his friend, the knight from catarina, Siegward, came to fullfil his promise, wielding one of the 2 blades that could harm yhorm, that the giant gave him in the case yhorm lost himself, that he lost sight of his purpose. With the help of the ashen one, who claimed the 2nd blade, siegward and the warrior struck down the king, putting him out of his misery. Yhorm died as he lived, even if not himself anymore, insane, and out of his mind, he died proud with blade in hand, fighting a losing battle, but still fighting for those he held dear. And even in death, you can still see glimpses of the great giant yhorm once was.
This was so beautiful it captures Yhorm's sadness and anger for the deaths caused by him. Truly a piece worthy for a lord of cinder.. May the sun shin upon him. ;-;

For someone that has a strong love for dark classical music and a newly found love for Dark Souls , I can’t even begin to explain how beautiful and soul wrenching this remix goes when paired with the misfortunes of the gentle giant Yhorm , who only wished to be loved and accepted but even in death he failed to accomplish that. I really admire and respect Yhorm as a character for his trials and tribulations and I feel this remix does justice to his story and emphasising the hardships and turmoil behind the ‘Profaned Vanguard’. Thank you ever so much Alex and Lindsay for this masterpiece , it should really get more recognition and I’m looking forward to more of the masterpieces that come out hopefully as I have belief they will deliver greatly :)
when you realize your not in a boss fight but are instead giving them a rest, their last true moments of emotion, their last true stroke of life before their end...you realize dark souls 3 is not about rekindling the world..but alllowing the flame to die and rest, so that the world in the future does not suffocate on the ash. You as the kindled one are there not as savior but as harbinger and a bringer of the peace they have long saught, you are the darkness that must snuff the flame and she awaits your grand betrayal

first time i played DS3, i managed to have siegward besides me in the fight against yhorm, but due to me unable to learn fast enough how to use the stormruler, siegward died, all thanks to my incompetence, i collected his armor, grieved and died when yhorm split me in half. i hoped, maybe he returns when i enter again, but for naught, he stayed dead. back again at the bonfire, i had to cry my eyes out, when i was done, i put on his armor and said to myself "you have not failed yet, siegward, you will keep your promise, i make sure of it" and fought yhorm in siegwards armor, and won. lost my savegame some time ago, and had to redo it all again, no matter, maybe this time i can save siegward, but it was like a nightmare, yhorm was unusually focussed on siegward, and he died before i could even reach the stormruler, i felt betrayed by the cosmos, is this some sick joke? am i cursed being unable to save him? and then, after getting a new pc, and having to play trough DS3 yet again, i once again stood before yhorm, before entering the boss arena, i tossed aside my shield and blade, took off my helmet, entered the arena, sprinted towards the blade and in unison with siegward defeated yhorm, i have finally atoned for my sin, i have finally managed to keep siegward alive. and now, i'm filled with confidence that i can finally defeat the one boss that has been causing me trouble all those years, if i managed to save siegward in this run, certainly i can kill midir this time!
what you guys have done is exactly what dark souls at its core does. Tell a story by letting you experience it. Yhorm is a sad character. Shunned by the people he ruled and left to grieve over the lost of those he loved. You've told this using your great talents of composing music much like how dark souls tells through truly living in that world. You do the series great credit, well done.

Been months and I've searched TH-cam a couple of times now just to find if there's a piano arrangement for this since my boyfriend requested me to play this on the piano. If I don't find any I might just make an arrangement of my own.
Literally jumped out of my seat and started spam clicking the notification for this. I've been waiting SOO long for someone to remix Yhorm's theme which in my opinion was one of the best soundtracks in the game, and you Sir did not dissapoint!
This is better than all the Metal covers of boss themes out there. Don't get me wrong, I love Metal, and the Metal covers! But this Yhorm remix/cover is the best thing I've heard while scouring the internet for a Metal Yhorm cover.

Yhorm is broken, putting a face behind his loss may bring more character to his story arc, but ultimately it won't change his ending.
I can really see this as Yhorm's ending credit music after he linked the fire, if he ever had a playable storyline.
Imagine a dark souls game based off the story of one of the bosses in the series, yhorm would be a good one but I think abyss watchers or Hawkeye would be better

Mr R2 Considering how he attacks siegward... Not sure he is of sound mind enough to wait for anyone.
Although if he was, it could’ve been really cool if somehow Siegward’s quest had been appropriately hard, and not... random hard, so that they could‘ve made the fight just be Yhorm approaching Siegward slowly, falling to his knees and letting siegward kill him.
So make Siegward’s quest hard enough that the player wouldn’t feel cheated when Yhorm just committed suicide, in essence.
But of course Yhorm is nowhere near this rational, so he just attacks anyone and everyone, hence the true reason why Siegward kills him.
I would like to listen a Nameless King super-epic second fase, with a great choir like Pontiff Sulyvahn or Lorian and Lothric.

Unlike other games, Dark Souls isn't really based on a protagonist trying to save their world, it's a prolonged story of tragedy and enlightenment. Of misery and pleasure, a story of freedom and slavery. Dark Souls isn't just a game, it describes the meaning of true pain.
I am a DM for a D&D campaign and this is the final boss sound track and I can't stop listening to it
I can picture fighting a younger yhorm to this, with him using both his greatshield and machete. At least the shield could block Storm Ruler that way...
its safe to say that if you kill him so easily it's because he wants out.

what if you became the reason he threw away his shield? in the fight you'd probably end up killing the one he wanted to protect. it'll be like dark souls 2, where you defeat the giant lord of the past and meet him again in your own time, to finish him off
The reason I love this score a lot more is the fact that it syncs with Yhorm's actual story lore and the things he went through.
While listening to this music, imagine seeing Yhorm being rejected by the people of the profaned capital, all except for one, and as he begins to grow in strength and show his greatness in war, but also being a great protector for those who fought behind him. And so he earns the peoples respect as he fights to greatness, but ultimately doomed as he failed to protect someone he loved.
Now the tone changes, imagine Yhorm weeping and mourning the loss of this person he loved, the people of the profaned capital, and his loyal friend saddened by their lords sorrow. Yhorm suffers depression and feels of a failure because he failed to protect his loss. Ultimately feeling rage and disgust for himself. Enraged, he casts his great shield to the floor with a thunderous force, stomping off to accept his duty as a Lord of Cinder before going to rest his undead soul.
Once more though, with the change of music, Yhorm rises like in the intro cutscene, the people of the profaned capital turn against him to put the giant lord to rest, but were no match and ultimately reduced to the molten piles of flesh we see in the capital. Now he rests on his throne until the Ashen one and Siegward step through, and the final battle engages. Ending with Yhorm's Death, and now, thanks to Siegward and the Ashen one, Yhorm may rest at last.
The music captures this theme of his tragedies and greatness all at once and is a well composed piece all together. And because it captures the emotion so well, I love this track a great deal more.

don't wanna be that guy, but Yhorm wasn't responsible for the deaths of his capital, it's the profaned flame that killed all of them and it kind of looks as if they all desperately rushed towards the throne room as if they were hoping he would be there to protect them, but Yhorm was in the Kiln Of The First Flame.
The story seems even more tragic because he manages to come home years later only to find out that his kingdom was burnt to the ground T_T

To me, I always asked what happened to all those burned and melted corpses in the capital, and thought that because Yhorm went hostile after awakening, he destroyed them all with his lord of cinder fires.

+Jason Alcatraz it's the corrupting force that turned the lords of cinder into hostile, monstrous beings, and the reason pontiff sulyvahn mutated his subjects, he was trying to harness it, hence the "profaned greatsword." it killed yhorm's people because he tried to become a lord to extinguish it, and failed.

Pontiff mutated his subjects purely for power. In essence, he's the main antagonist of Dark Souls 3.
I still don't know if I believe the idea that the profamed flame killed Yhorms people, but that's mostly because I don't know much about the profamed flame.
With everything that you have composed, I feel that this is, undoubtedly, the best piece that you have ever done.

Like you said in your commentary, i adore how this song tells a story, yhorm's story, all of his journey, his hardships, him trying his best to be a king for the people who resented him, a proud and ferocious warrior, but with a heart of gold, a giant who lost someone really important to him, abandoning the once giant shield he wore in battle. Befriending a proud knight of catarina, who once made him a promise he intended to fullfil. Despite his loyalty to his people, they still held no respect for the giant, who gave them the only thing that could truly kill him, a sword that controlled storms and felled giants, as a way of telling his subjects to claim his life if they despised him so much. They didn't, and yhorm lived another day, becoming a lord of cinder.
But that act was the downfall of the once great capital, scorched to cinders, all of yhorm's subjects died, and the whole city was set ablaze.
He had failed.
But when everything looked grim, his friend, the knight from catarina, Siegward, came to fullfil his promise, wielding one of the 2 blades that could harm yhorm, that the giant gave him in the case yhorm lost himself, that he lost sight of his purpose.
With the help of the ashen one, who claimed the 2nd blade, siegward and the warrior struck down the king, putting him out of his misery.
Yhorm died as he lived, even if not himself anymore, insane, and out of his mind, he died proud with blade in hand, fighting a losing battle, but still fighting for those he held dear.
And even in death, you can still see glimpses of the great giant yhorm once was.
That is some good music.

For someone that has a strong love for dark classical music and a newly found love for Dark Souls , I can’t even begin to explain how beautiful and soul wrenching this remix goes when paired with the misfortunes of the gentle giant Yhorm , who only wished to be loved and accepted but even in death he failed to accomplish that.
I really admire and respect Yhorm as a character for his trials and tribulations and I feel this remix does justice to his story and emphasising the hardships and turmoil behind the ‘Profaned Vanguard’.
Thank you ever so much Alex and Lindsay for this masterpiece , it should really get more recognition and I’m looking forward to more of the masterpieces that come out hopefully as I have belief they will deliver greatly :)

This music makes me want to cry
when you realize your not in a boss fight but are instead giving them a rest, their last true moments of emotion, their last true stroke of life before their end...you realize dark souls 3 is not about rekindling the world..but alllowing the flame to die and rest, so that the world in the future does not suffocate on the ash.
You as the kindled one are there not as savior but as harbinger and a bringer of the peace they have long saught, you are the darkness that must snuff the flame and she awaits your grand betrayal
I think this is your best work so far. Really love that dark, epic but sad feelings.

first time i played DS3, i managed to have siegward besides me in the fight against yhorm, but due to me unable to learn fast enough how to use the stormruler, siegward died, all thanks to my incompetence, i collected his armor, grieved and died when yhorm split me in half. i hoped, maybe he returns when i enter again, but for naught, he stayed dead.
back again at the bonfire, i had to cry my eyes out, when i was done, i put on his armor and said to myself "you have not failed yet, siegward, you will keep your promise, i make sure of it" and fought yhorm in siegwards armor, and won.
lost my savegame some time ago, and had to redo it all again, no matter, maybe this time i can save siegward, but it was like a nightmare, yhorm was unusually focussed on siegward, and he died before i could even reach the stormruler, i felt betrayed by the cosmos, is this some sick joke? am i cursed being unable to save him?
and then, after getting a new pc, and having to play trough DS3 yet again, i once again stood before yhorm, before entering the boss arena, i tossed aside my shield and blade, took off my helmet, entered the arena, sprinted towards the blade and in unison with siegward defeated yhorm, i have finally atoned for my sin, i have finally managed to keep siegward alive.
and now, i'm filled with confidence that i can finally defeat the one boss that has been causing me trouble all those years, if i managed to save siegward in this run, certainly i can kill midir this time!

what you guys have done is exactly what dark souls at its core does. Tell a story by letting you experience it. Yhorm is a sad character. Shunned by the people he ruled and left to grieve over the lost of those he loved. You've told this using your great talents of composing music much like how dark souls tells through truly living in that world. You do the series great credit, well done.
