- I Put A Disc Drive Into The Disc-Less Xbox One S All Digital - This version of Xbox has all of the connections for a disc drive, has an eject button and even has the cutout for the disc drive in the top metal plate. Obviously the only option I had was to put a disc drive into it to see if it would work!

Personally I think they should have dropped the price a little more. That or ship it with 1 or 2tb HDD/SSD hybrid or 1 tb SSD. Just my opinion.

I think this console was a huge missed opportunity. It needed it’s own design as well as $150 price point.

Microsoft could at least added a larger heatsink and greater capacity storage drive to make use of the optical drive space. It's a recycled console design.

@@mr.c8681 Its cheaper from a MSRP stand point the One S w/ Disc Drive technically retails for $299, its just been on sale for way less for ever now. Meanwhile the ADXOS is new so selling at retail, I give it a month before we see a sub $200 ADXOS and by black Friday it'll be $150 with doorbuster pricing in the $130 range.

I figured disk drives are still in use so reason why everything is the same but different case if they have a oversupply of Xbox’s after all these years and they figured they could possibly sell the disk drives for computer manufacturers and then try to sell them again. That was my idea

Yeah i can see them scrarching their heads in the marketing department, Well we cant very well call it the All Microsoft Store Edition. Ever try shopping online from a console? You pay all this money to get a console as powerful as a PC, but locked into this Xbox realm with, besides the 12 or so commercial apps like Netflix, prime, spotify, what are these hundred of other bogus apps from no name developers.
Well, they cut the price and removed something that not a lot of people nowadays hardly use or could justify not using with that substantial price cut. I see no problem with it

Why do you think they marry the drives? So when it breaks after that 1 year warranty you go and buy another :) If it breaks before that year then Microsoft can fix em easily enough.
They also marry them so it stops people putting there own firmware on the drives with ease and running backups.

Technically you could swap the whole motherboard with one from an Xbox One S with a valid disc drive that matches the board. Then you'd be able to get the drive to work in the All Digital edition. Though at that point you'd pretty much be buying the All Digital for the case.

It's kind of a dilemma.
I still own a 2014 Xbox One. Back in the old days most digital games were priced outragiously. They would even ask 50 bucks for a year old FIFA game. (Anyone going to Game Stop like stores and you can find old FIFA games for pretty much free!)
Now most digital games are cheaper than the normal physical copies so I used the drive for..........less than 10 installs of physical games.
So yes. There is kind of a market for it, but it was smarter if they added a Xbox One X model too.
This is a passing house between a normal Xbox and one that supports 4K.

@@Bram25 9/10 I can find most physical games cheaper than the digital versions still. This is especially true for shortly after games are released and when you factor in used copies. Physical copies of games can be found for most triple A games for $40 within a month or two of release, and $30 or less with a few months. The only real exception being games that are run in limited printings, which isn't an option for the Xbox market at the moment.

One instance where it is indeed cheaper to buy the actual game is Dead Rising 4. Where they still have the balls to ask a whopping 45 bucks for the deluxe versions while buying the season pass and the physical copy is 20 bucks. :)

Yea, it's probably cheaper to mass manufacture one type of motherboard across the different skews.
Do DVD and Blu-Ray movies work? On the 360 DVDs would work on unmarried drives just not games so it may be the same here.

Actually they should. Xbox One has a Blu-Ray app that does work with bluray movies.
cpup100 just because there is a Blu-ray app doesn’t mean the Xbox would be able to detect the disk if the drive isn’t paired to the motherboard. It still wouldn’t work.

The disc drive has a different security key to the one on the motherboard you installed it on. The drive would need flashing with the key to match the motherboard.

This will not work unless you have flashed the drive with the firmware that's required from motherboard. This goes back to 360 days of console hacking

The drive and console both share an encryption key that is unique to that pairing.

@m3zmr easier said than done. A quick Google suggests there are no tutorials for this. It was possible with the Xbox 360 though.
m3zmr The motherboard remains unhackable to this day. There is no way to extract the pairing key, if there is one in the first place.
@@Tronicsfix try a system update maybe this can married the drive because the system doesn't have the drive at the start maybe try to reinstall the os can make it happend i just think like so if the console don't have any dvd key stored in nand and you install a drive with one maybe system update can sync this key up?

I would have hoped for them to put in a secondary hard disc, they could probably reuse the same sata and power port for the optical disc drive,so they wouldn't need to change any boards to suit it. It would all be software to support it,which they've already got for USB drives I'm sure they could set it up in the same way.
All they need to do is some software and maybe a new plastic mounting for another hard drive.

Wondering if you'd be up for testing if you can add a secondary storage drive on the unused SATA port in the XB One SAD. I know the power connector on the board is wrong. I can't find anything online for a pre-made 11-pin power to SATA power adapter, but I'd think making one using a spare 11-pin power cable and a standard SATA power cable would be fairly easy using the public SATA power wiring diagrams and a multimeter to test the output and distribution on the 11-pin connector.
I'm guessing that's a challenge you'd be up to, although it might be a lot of trouble for something that probably won't work, but if you're interested, I'd be down to make the power adapter if you could send the power output readings from the 11-pin port on the board, and mail it out to you. I'm assuming you're based out of the US or Canada, according to your accent.

Yeah, shouldve came with an entire redesign. They literally just removed the disc drive and shipped the rest as is(with the new case inside). Such a lazy, rushed cash grab of a system.

@@sliteovmind7930 these companies redesign consoles all the time, sometimes for no reason (the 360 made to look like an xbox one, PS3 super slim, Wii mini) so it's not that much of a hassle at all. And making it smaller means less materials used, saving them money. At $250, which at the moment is more than a regular Xbox One S with a bundled, recent game, you expect some effort.
@@Sadvillainy true but at this stage in the console 's lifecycle I don't think a new overhall would ba e been warranted, this is Microsoft's proverbial attempt at dipping their toes in the water for the next gen rollout. They want to soften the consumer's mindset and expectation for a similar next gen console in the next year or two.

You still need the matching key. On 360 you could get it from the drive itself, but there's no drive in this disk-less console. You can also get it from the system, but you would need to hack it first and there are no hacks for Xbox One.
They may have disable the drive on firmware, they are pushing 3 different firmware right now (xbox one, xbox one slim and the xbox one X), i don't see why they won't push one more for the xbox one SAD.

For it to work its very simple...disconnect this harddrive. Put in one of your harddrives from the badge of defect xbox one s. That harddrive includes software to read from the disk. You re good to go👍

drives have always been tied to the motherboard, but it would be interesting to see if it will play dvd's and 4k blurays as these ,might work
I'm one of those weird people who bought a 12gb PS3 and added a hard drive to it. To me, I was going to rip out the hard drive anyway and upgrade it, why not just get the model without a hard drive. In that case, it worked perfectly and I still use my pair of 12gb PS3's and their 750-1tb hybrid drives.
I was shocked to see that the 360 E i got for Christmas had only 4gb, so i went on amazon and somehow found a 500gb hdd for 48 bucks. Cheap ass hell and has around 180gb left on it.

Microsoft still have a lot of inventory left in their warehouse so they decided to take out the Blu-Ray player,uninstall the Blu-Ray app, bondo the disc insert area on the top case and repaint and tries to resell to the consumer just to try to recoup their lost.

As far as I'm aware the Xbox is still more media friendly than the PS4 so they should lead with what it's best at an old arcade/previous gen game player up to 4k with media essentials. How can such a massive company not see this.

Question about the all digital. I changed the hard drive on one due to failed hard drive. Video signal is perfectly fine up until the os is 100% installed and then goes green lines everywhere and blank screen. All help would be appreciated!

Curious fact: Nintendo do almost the same including drives that not play movies on their disc based consoles. The reason? it's cheaper to produce a videogame console if you don't need to pay the royalties for multimedia.
I guess MS kinda tryed this looking for more profit with their subscription programs combined with a crescent digital demand and their plans for XCloud.
I remember back in the day you could spoof the drive ID on the 360 to replace faulty or broken ones, don’t know if it’s still possible on these new ones as firmware encryption changes everyday and every update. Thanks for trying 👍

Okay, but really... Most disc games still have to be installed on your Xbox hard drive anyway so I never understand this argument. It probably saves you a bit of a download, but honestly that's it for most games.
@@ashewalked True, but if you run out of space with a disc-drive console, you can delete the game and later on reinstall it via the disc without worrying about internet data usage. If you only have an all-digital console, you either need external storage or you need to re-download the game after deleting it.
You should NOT buy that console, ever.
Get a proper one, with a disc drive. then you can buy/sell used games and play without internet, anywhere!

You can't really play without internet as many games require Day 1 patches, or didn't include all the content on the disc due to lack of space and require further downloads.

It's similar to the 360: I assume you would have to flash the DDKEY of the drive to the console or if the console does already contain a working, hidden DDKEY; flash it to the drive.
You should of used a XB1S drive it might of worked then as I don't think that the software would of been changed

i change my xbox 360 Thumbstick Sensor Axis Module an now the lift trigger is stock it's like your always pressing the trigger do you have a fix for this?
I am glad you tested it out, now go the other way around... An Xbox that has a broken Disk Drive and gets the latest version of the OS installed will it boot up without errors and if not then I think it is somehow flashed in the bios. I am going to pull these older systems out of the boxes one of these weekends and give it shot.
This "Look at my new product, it's like the old one you already bought but with less features" is just getting out of hand.
I'm surprised the disc drive works on all-digital edition of Xbox One S, but the software doesn't recognize it. Strange. Maybe you could try reflashing a firmware that detects a disc drive.

They weren't, if they were thinking at any capacity, this would have never happened. Yes a lot of people buy only digital games, but no to everyone having constant or stable internet. Them removing the disc drive just caused them to lose more money than they gain. I hope Sony and Nintendo keep their disc drives cause I still buy physical copies of games.
They are basically seeing what the demand for a all-digital Xbox would be. It's pretty cheap for them, since they don't have to change anything internally besides removing the drive.
If they feel it is worth it, they'll make a new design thats smaller, designed from the beginning for no drive.

I don't know if it's been commented on before (cba to look)... Try a dvd or bluray. Xbox disc drives are tied to the console they're used in, making them a PITA to replace, so if you use one from another system in another console, dvds and blurays work, but games do not.

Can you test the power consumption or remove the fan/heatsink and measure the SoC to see if it has been shrinked to 12nm/7nm?

Totally depends on how you plan to use them.
@@Tronicsfix I love the nintendo switch but i just dont really like that many games that it has, but its portable which i LOVE. The PS4 pro is not portable but it has a lot of games i like. im in such an akward situation. i sold my PS4 slim and i completely regret it plus i was in the middle of some games and forgot about that. so i dont know i think i want the PS4 Pro, but im not completely sure.
I assumed the discless version would be smaller.. but it's not.. it simply dosen't have it. So how much cheaper is this over a normal XB1S, when these drives are only worth $20?
