The main man of Nightwish is keyboard player Tuomas Holopainen. A true character and the sweetest of men, that could be described as a happy introvert. He grew up a loner, but described his childhood as extremely happy, and always cherished books, comics and movies of epic and poetic nature. Not least the Moomins (Finland's most famous contribution to fantasy literature), Scrooge MacDuck, Tim Burton and "Pirates of the Caribbean". He originally studied to become a marine biologist, but changed his mind when his first release by a musical hobby project was a surprise mega hit in Finland. That release was the Nightwish debut album "Angels fall first" in 1997. Nightwish very quickly became one of the biggest heavy metal bands in Europe, and their success has just kept on growing ever since, to a global phenomenon. Tuomas' musical career is far from restricted to Nightwish, however. For one thing, he made a universally praised concept album based upon ... wait for it ... his favorite Scrooge MacDuck story. How cool is that??

Considering how Sami, Tarja and Anette were removed from the band, i don't think "sweetest of men" is the right term to describe Tuomas.

    • @Tidarthian76
      @Tidarthian76 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

@@TheAlja It's the job. Sami didn't like the music of Nightwish. Tarja is not a victim in the story and Anette no longer suited the group. It's hard but it's a job and decisions have to be made. If your work is no longer suitable, you leave. This is the adult world and no one died. Fortunately, life doesn't stop at one job. You can be kind and gentle and know how to make the right decisions when necessary. And it's a little easy to charge Tuomas as if he were all alone in the story. In the end, everyone is doing well.

@@Tidarthian76 Good remark. Also: at some point the band including staff was more than 50 people, all employees that have to get payed every month. So the show must go on and the behaviour of Tarja/Marcelo was a threat to that formula.

@@Tidarthian76 In the adult world, when you get fired, you are usually informed about this in private, by your boss. You know, respect, fairness. Not by reading about it in the newspaper with all your shortcomings listed aswell. Or out of the blue by a spokesperson while you are going through a difficult time. I mean, that does happen. But then we usually revoke terms like "the sweetest of men" from such people or companies.

Check out "Everdream" from the same show. You are just expecting things to start breaking. At one time I believe Floor said it was the most difficult Nightwish song to sing. I think that was before they recorded "Shoemaker" however. I would like to know her thoughts now. She is an exceptional vocalist and currently my favorite. So the bassist is Marko! He's no longer with the band, sadly, but he is also the vocalist in this band as well. He has a lot of range in his voice as well. I'd definitely recommend Phantom of the Opera (End of an Era with the first vocalist, Tarja) or Romanticide. HOWEVER, if you're enjoying Floor as most do, do Romanticide first then Phantom. Those 2 will show you how he and the vocalist of that particular time mesh their harmony. If you want to hear how he does it by himself, watch While Your Lips Are Still Red or The Islander. This band is so amazing. I met Marko and he's SOOOOO awesome IRL.

I have never seen Floor tired and that is because of her classical trained technique, taking very quick abdominal inhales and pumping that air in a constant flow to the larynx.
Old joke: "Does Floor ever take a breath?" Answer: "Yes!, one time on Tuesday and one time on Friday". The guys are already on stage for more than 25 years, their tours can last up to 2 years, so a lot of routine but still loving their job every day. BTW Floor is also on stage since 1997, her first band was After Forever, her second band Revamp, Nightwish being her third.

I grew up with alot of hair metal, glam rock and all that, men with long thick hair and i saw alot of attempted headbanging or as its called now, windmills. I can honestly say,i have only seen one guy that did it almost as powerful as Floor does it,and his name is Jason Newsted,2nd bassist of Metallica. He used to shave the sides of his head,so the hair on top would get this perfect swing when he did his windmills.
I have never seen as powerful windmills as when Floor does it though. But hey,you can see it on her biceps, that woman is pure muscle. And not those gymrat muscles, nope this woman works with horses and stuff back at her farm in Sweden,so its natural hard work and she keeps in shape the natural way.
Its not for nothing when she used to be in her own band before Nightwish, she told a story about a guy throwing really explicit, disrespectful remarks her way,she decided to call him out for it,basically telling him that she would beat the crap out of him,if he didnt zip it. The troublemaker didnt say a single word after that.
Floor is the kindest and most peaceful soul you can imagine meeting/talk to,but she doesnt take crap like that.
So she gets alot of respect wherever she goes, people admiring her for daring to speak up against difficult topics, she has even gotten thank yous from other female lead vocalists or female instrumentalists out there, for speaking up against a common problem in the industry. It has gotten alot better these days, although it still happens once in awhile. It used to be really bad back in the day, thats why you almost never saw any females in rock or metal. I think Joan Jett & The Blackhearts was the first female lead rock band i got aware of.
But yeah, that explains Floors stunning windmills, shes just impressively buildt like that. What always surprises me,is that she doesnt seem dizzy at all from doing those, and it doesnt affect her voice at all, wich many vocals coaches even, has said would be a common thing.
Jukka on the drums we call The Pirate, because of his little goatee looking beard, the bandana and the fact that Jukka was the 2nd best prankster in Nightwish next to one of Lulus favourites,Emppu on the lead guitar. So Jukka always has this look about him, like he is up to something. My favourite drummer of alltime, just watch as you see more and more performances from Wacken Open Air ("Wakken" not Whacken lol) He will attract your attention often for his crowd interactions, little tricks he does quite often without missing a beat. The most passionate drummer i have ever seen.
Marko on the bass we call The Viking, because of the obvious,Lulu mentioned one of them being his long beard.
8:42 And believe it or not,but Floor has gone higher then that. 9:14 Well Lulu,i have no records of this happening, but i wouldnt be surprised if she has done so. Other reactors has actually wondered on the same thing
Powerhouse Floor has left people "shell shocked" (not literally, but by facial expressions) by her high notes, how long she manages to stay there, and by how powerful she delievers them. I have stated it several times, for me shes the best vocalist i have ever withnessed/listened to.
And i have alot of great vocalists i love, that can sing insanely good, like the late Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) Chris Cornell (Soundgarden,Audioslave and more) Alissa White Gluz (the list is endless really) But noone has managed to break me like Floor does, its like she knows up front if im having a bad day and need to get it out of my system,if im having a bad day and she knows im better off feeling better,if im having an okay or good day and she knows up front that i need to feel even better. Shes the best psychiatrist i have ever experienced, and thats mostly her on pre-recorded live concerts, music videos or whatever. Why does she know how im better off feeling that day,but hundreds-thousands of other vocalists i love, doesnt? Thats abit deeper explanation behind why so many jokingly call her a goddess. Because there seems to be something mysterious about her, that she has some powers we are not aware of.
Im still baffled that in all these "whos the best singer of alltime" videos and polls i have seen,Floor is not even considered an honorable mention in most of them. It baffles my mind, because to me there is noone thats better. 2 vocalists has managed to break me through singing,Floor Jansen and adorable Angelina Jordan. Imagine if those 2 did a duet?!
Once you learn the backstory of Floor, you will learn to appreciate her even more. Life has not been easy on her,she has had many battles, there hasnt been any easy way to success. And when you hear her talk, she just wins you over instantly!
The sweetest, most genuine, caring, loving, modest, her humour is amazing,im certain shes one of the most wonderful personalities you can find on this earth right now.
Before i even had internet and google was even a thing,i saw her in a music video by her first band After Forever called Energize Me. I think i saw the music video abit late,it had already played abit,so i never got to catch the title of the song (i sort of guessed it though,by hearing Energize Me in the chorus alot) And i never got the band name or most importantly her name, because i crushed on her ..... just instantly. I tried searching by asking friends or people i knew worked with music,if they knew who i meant, but noone did. So over the years i decided it was a lost case for me.
Then 2012 happens, and i hear talks of a new singer been temporarily hired in for Nightwish,a band i loved from i heard them at around mid 90s. I had gone through alot of disappointments and musical fears with the band at this point,as i knew about Anettes era in the band, and it had many people stop listening to theyr music. In my case it was just the fear of never having Nightwish sounding like they got known for doing, loud symphonic metal music and powerful female lead vocals. It was when i had the mentality that "There cant be anyone better then Tarja for Nightwish".
And i bought into alot of lies coming from Tarjas husband,it was alot of noise and mess happening back then. Anyway,so at first i thought people meant Anette, because i knew about her replacing Tarja, and that Nightwish sounded soo different with Anette. (I now respect her era in Nightwish soo much more then i used to)
But then Wacken Open Air 2013 comes and they have a big announcement to make,Marko introduces theyr new permanent lead vocalist. It takes me several seconds actually, but then i do recognize her face once i see it clearly on that stage......BOOM,i feel that same rush coming over me as years and years before. Floor actually managed to make me crush on her twice. The audacity on this woman! No,but jokes aside..... i have never felt that either with anyone, they say you just crush on someone once. Thats the norm..... so is there something special about Floor? My answer is: There defintly is!!
Most beautiful story i have read was from a man that considered himself a rough, cold type of guy, never showed any emotions when his loved ones passed or experienced something awful/difficult,he mentioned alot of stuff. To a point where he kept asking himself,is there really something wrong with me? Am i just that cold?!
Through a random Nightwish reaction on YT this man got to experience Floor, and her voice and presence on that stage destroyed him instantly,he cried constantly. And his own words were "I did not even feel embarrased,it felt soo good and i am forever thankful and am now officially a member of The Nightwish Army and a fan of Floor forever!".

I saw them in 2022. Amazing. Floor just gave birth to her second daughter, Lucy, late last year, so we are not sure what will happen with a world tour, or just a European tour. It's awesome the three of you are on this Nightwish journey. The band is truly amazing. Floor, who is Dutch, can pretty much cross all genres of music - she can sing opera, musical theater, symphonic metal, etc. She is married to Hannas Van Dahl, the drummer of the Swedish band Sabaton, and they have 2 little girls. Fun fact - Hannas was a soldier in the Christmas Truce vid you covered. He was the first soldier to climb the steps and venture out into no man's land between the two opposing armies. Floor actually does the vocals at the end of that video, when the credits start to roll.

None of the songs in this concert were written for Floor. She joined Nightwish 10 months earlier in the middle of their tour because their second singer Anette became sick. Anette decided to leave the band and just after the Wacken concert Nightwish announced that Floor would stay as their lead singer. Another musician, Troy, was also permanently added to the band. You haven't heard him yet, playing all kinds of instruments. He's great, you'll find out.
You also haven't heard the bearded bass player Marko sing. Try "Romanticide" from the same concert at Wacken to hear him. Or "Song of Myself". "7 Days to the Wolves" from the concert at Wembley in 2015 is awesome.
There are so many gems to find in your discovery of Nightwish performances. I love this reaction and how you three react (facial expressions) in a totally different way but all like the performance just as much ❤ You're adorable, so glad I found you!

Oh yeah, and pardon my rambling, I just love going into my teacher's mode: Nightwish were also one of the major spearheaders in the resurgence of classic heavy metal in the late 90s. As you're probably aware, traditional metal became really unfashionable really fast when the grunge scene, mainly associated with Nirvana, made it big in 1991-92. Many, especially in the US, believe that traditional metal died then and there, though in actuality it maintained a prolific underground movement overseas, particularly in Germany with bands like Helloween, Gamma Ray, Doro (the unofficial Queen of Heavy Metal), Blind Guardian, Running Wild, Rage and, lest we forget and in particular, America's finest Conan the Barbarian fetishists Manowar enjoying massive popularity.
However, it was only in 1997 that traditional, melodic heavy metal returned to the mainstream public eye, as the result of just one album. "Glory to the brave" by Swedish band Hammerfall made traditional heavy metal the new black on the European metal scene virtually overnight. The scene was immediately cemented by the arrival of Finland's Nightwish, Italy's Rhapsody and Germany's Edguy and Primal Fear. With that, traditional metal was back with a vengeance on the European scene and hasn't left since. However, of the band's just mentioned, it's only Nightwish (and to a certain extent Primal Fear) that are not long past their commercial glory days, but have maintained and even increased their popularity. So they are still holding their own against present day contenders like Sabaton, Ghost, Alestorm, Volbeat and Powerwolf.
Along with their Dutch contemporaries Within Temptation, they have even spawned an entire subgenre of their own, "Female Operatic Metal": classically inspired metal with classically trained female vocalists. And believe it or not, that subgenre includes a HUGE, and still growing, number of bands by now. But that's a story for another day. Maybe! 🙂

If you ever listen to" the poet and the pendulum" by Nightwish , some disagree, but I think it's vitally important first to research the history of the song and it's meaning ( which is very deep) to fully appreciate what a masterpiece it is.

Whether Floor Jansen can charge a glass with her voice hardly anyone knows, but she can in fact sing the phone book. Floor is a charismatic storyteller and vocal coach. No pitch control no autotune. Floor can sing rock pop, opera and everything in between. pls can you do Floor and Nightwish the Phantom of the Opera (9ft. There might be a suprise in it PSS: For a feel goo moment. After you have seen a lot of the songs from the German Wacken Festival of them. The whole show is online as well. After the last song they are almost tearing up and hugging because they know what they delivered in front of soooo many people. Floor Jansen still says it was their "best" show. In a sense of everythign jsut worked together and the result was amazing.

The song is from the 2nd lead singer, Anette Olzon era. The 2011 Imaginaerum album. Tuomas (keyboards/primary songwriter) likes themes of stories and childhood innocence, and is a fan of Disney and composer Hans Zimmer.
The operatic part at the end was done solely by the choir in the studio version, as Anette had more of a pop/rock style and operatic vocals weren't her forte. Floor joined in, or took over , the operatic parts when she joined the band about 10 months before this concert.
Lulu, that's Marko Hietala ,on bass guitar, with the beard you like. He is no longer with the band, having left in 2021 for personal reasons, after 20 years. Marko sings too, he has a great voice. A lot of backing and co-lead, and some lead vocals. To hear his voice, try "Romanticide" from this concert, or from the 2005 Helsinki show (End of an Era DVD): "Phantom of the Opera" ,with original singer Tarja Turunen, and their cover/tribute of Pink Floyd's "High Hopes" where he sings lead.

Lulu, another good example is “The Islander”. It is actually mostly written by Marco. He originally wrote it for his band Tarot I believe. The live performance from Tampere, Finland in 2015 is the one to watch!

      @olgahein4384 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Oh, and there is this whole backstory with Marco, his beard and Nightwish - not to mention his voice became like this thanks to disastrous surgery, when his one vocal cord was sliced, JUST after he joined Nightwish. Thanks to that, his voice became iconic (his vocal cord didn't heal perfectly and now is not in sync with his other vocal cord), but his higher falsetto range was gone for good.

Wacken Open Air is a festival and NW was one of the headline bands to play. Tickets for this sell out a year in advance. In 2012, NW had a different singer. Some of us at this concert had not heard NW with the new singer. I was partially familiar with Floor Jansen from an earlier band she had been a part of from years back because that band opened for NW once. Floor had stepped away from singing for several months when one band she was in fell apart and she felt quite exhausted. When Tuomas called to ask Floor to join the band after NW fired Anette Olzon, Floor was at her sister's wedding. She said yes with some excitement and trepidation. She joined NW in the U.S. part of the tour, with only two days to prepare!

They are very talented and love what they do. To some artists performing is like a job. To bands like Nightwish performing is the best thing in the world and they miss it so much when they can't be on stage. Although I do think Floor is really enjoying being with her newborn daughter Lucy right now as well. She has 2 girls; Freya and Lucy. She lives in the middle of nowhere in Sweden with her husband Hannes (drummer of Sabaton), their daughters, dog, cats and horses. She loves horses. She can be a beast and goddess on stage, but off stage she's a sweet down to earth woman with a good sense of humor. Impossible not to love Floor!

It felt more like 20 minutes to me. The show was over WAY too soon! I'd waited 20 years to see them live and it was worth the wait! I think you watched Ghost Love Score previously - it was the 13th song in the set. The hair flips is called a windmill. It's not without some risks if done wrong. You can tell she's doing it right because she can sing immediately. If you do it wrong, you can compress your throat and over time cause tearing. Further, for women there is a threat of osteoporosis which raises the risk of bone breakage - she has been warned and is doing this less now as she is getting older.

Tarja also once broke a lamp while training (Kathy, Lulu and Donna get to know Tarja when they explore more Nightwish. Tarja was the 1st singer of NW). It is more about right frequency for that specific object, and enough volume...and the glass must be thin. So I'm quite sure Floor can shatter a glass too.
