Drummer Bill Ward was such a BEAST drummer!!!!! Young Ozzy was SO energetic and had a great stage presence!!! Black Sabbath started the Heavy Metal genre as we know it (originally started as a Blues rock band, so their first 2 albums had a lot of bluesy influences and grooves).

Ozzy was a perfect fit for Sabbath, and the combined talents in this band made them legendary. You can´t really go wrong when picking songs from their early albums.
Bill Ward is the heaviest jazz drummer ever heard. If you look carefully, you can see that he's beating the drums with the thick ends of his drumsticks for extra power. His fills are always very creative. He has become my favorite drummer, because I never tire of listening to him.

Tony Iommi (the guitarist with floofy hair lol) chopped off the tips of his fretting fingers in a sheet metal accident and made finger protectors to allow him to play. Unfortunately even with protectors it was too painful to play. To overcome the pain he slackened the strings which made a deeper sound and heavy metal music was born. You can clearly see the finger protectors in this video.

Tony Iommi, the guitarist worked in a metal fabriicatiom factory. On his last day after quiting to play music full time he was asked to fill in on a machine had never used. It was a steel cutting machine. He had an accident and cut off his two middle fingers close to the first knucle. Instead of giving up, he melted plastic to make new fingr tips. He tuned the guitar lower to make it easier to play, which created a dirtier heaver sound.

This is from their legendary concert in Paris (1970). Before "Heavy Metal" became the universally accepted term for this kind of music, bands like Sabbath were described variously as "Downer Rock" and "Atomic Blues". Sabbath were from Birmingham, England, a grim industrial city where, as guitarist Tony Iommi put it, "you either worked in a factory or joined a gang." Such a great band.

What makes this recording so special is Ozzy uses lyrics from both songs, Walpurgis and War Pigs, mixing them into what you hear and see in this 1970 concert footage. The original lyrics are darker than the antiwar lyrics, if you can believe it. .

These are the album lyrics, a bit different than the live version here.
    War Pigs lyrics - studio
    Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
    Evil minds that plot destruction
    Sorcerer of death's construction
In the fields, the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
    Death and hatred to mankind
    Poisoning their brainwashed minds
    Oh lord, yeah!
    Politicians hide themselves away
    They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor, yeah
Time will tell on their power minds
    Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait till their judgement day comes, yeah!
Now in darkness, world stops turning
    Ashes where their bodies burning
No more war pigs have the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees, the war pigs crawling
    Begging mercy for their sins
    Satan laughing, spreads his wings
    Oh lord, yeah!

Ozzy did some crazy things but that is not why they fired him. It was his sobriety problems. Sharon Osbourne was the daughter of his manger. She believed in him. And the famous biting the head off a live Bat, happened when he was doing that with fake bats and he didn't realize that the Bat a fan threw up on stage was live.

People think they are dark because of their lyrics. But they sing from the dark to put a light on it.
Them crosses aren't to mock. Ozzy to his last gig ended by saying God bless you all... and it was heart felt.
Men of faith rather than religion.
They have a song called NIB. About when the devil falls in love. But the devil only loves the devil. It's a warning not to be tempted away from those who love you unconditionally

🤘🏼💕 You ladies Rock!! I love that you did this version, and now you should treat yourselves to the evolution of it… The official video is amazing, and the sound is clearer, which gives you a chance to connect with it more emotionally, especially when you realize the devastating truth that a song released 50 years ago, could’ve just as well been released yesterday…
And then their live performance of it on the “Last Tour” is incredible, because you see the devotion of the fans, and what this song and the band has meant to them over decades of great music… in this 1970 video they had something to prove, they were a great band with a message…in the last version it’s a gift to his fans, and it’s just a really cool thing to witness…thousands of people singing your song to you has to be surreal and awesome 😎✨💚🤘🏼

The Creators of Metal. It's funny how these beasts (Bill Ward, Zeppelin's Bonham and a rare few others) were the architects of what heavy rock or metal drumming actually is, and since they couldn't go to musicians institute and learn metal drumming, they all started out as jazz drummers - and it shows.

Welcome to Black Sabbath, Ladies. With the original lineup, every song is unique, and has a specific message or story. They are the primordial metal ooze that all other bands crawled out of. A perfect fusion of Jazz, Blues, and Rock. So many possible next songs to recommend, but I would go with Iron Man next. Massive riffs telling a twisted superhero story.

Great Reaction Kathy, Lulu and Donna!
That's extra length of guitar string that should be snipped off once the guitar is strung. I don't why some people leave it like that, it drives me crazy, you could poke someone in the eye with that wire flying around like that!!! lol

Bill Ward is soooooo underrated. He also reminds me of the drummer for the Muppets lol. Ozzy was kicked out of Sabbath in 78 or 79.

Tony , the guitar player , lost about a quarter of one of his fingers on his left hand . It was lost while he was at work , on the machine he used at his factory job .It is on his right hand , the hand he uses on the neck of his guitar . He has a prosthetic finger he uses to play with !!

  • @phoenixmichaels

I was a lead guitarist back in the day: those strings aren't broken. The strings are way longer than they need to be for some guitars. They are wrapped through and around the tuners at the tip of the neck. If you have the time, you can take a wire clipper and cut them short to fit. Lotsa guys just didn't bother, as they were changing their strings nightly. So, you are just seeing the excess after the wrap hanging out. Fun fact: the lead guitarist, Toni Iommi, lost the tips/top knuckle of his fingers in an accident. If you look closely, you can see the latex prosthetics he made for himself so he could keep playing. He also tuned down his guitar some so it would make the strings less tense to accommodate that injury... accidentally creating that lower "sound of doom" tone that became so popular. Do "Supernaut" next definitely.
