Roland SH-7

  • This time I made multitrack recordings of the Roland SH-7 in Ableton Live, demonstrating that it can take you virtually anywhere, from dark and metallic to warm and creamy. All sounds are from the SH-7 except for the drum sounds in the first half of the video for which the Roland R8mkII was used. Parts were played live or programmed with the Dotcom Q960 or FR Revolution sequencers. The SH series can be perfectly integrated into a modular setup.
While I wouldn't find the SH-7 ideal for percussion and drum sounds, the last 2 minutes of the video show that it's possible with this late 70s classic.

Great demo! It was about time someone put together a decent presentation of the SH-7. If you want to explore drum sounds further, I would recommend multitracking/layering. I've done quite a few tracks using the SH-7 for all sounds including drums.

Congrats on your purchase! It is really one of the best synths out there. I have it permanently setup in my studio and I use it almost in every track or session.
One of my favorite sounds is to setup the two Osc’s about the same (and not use the sub) and then play it paraphonic (fifths, quarters, …) with the Ring Mod dialled in. Using this setting do filter sweeps and bend notes. It works every time (in my video I did this a lot).
