    Alex, I once fixed 2 bent pins on a new CPU I had just bought and somehow messed up.
    I did NOT have a microscope or fine tweezers. I got lucky that they were both together on an edge,
    more easily able to get at.
    I used a straight pin, an Exacto knife, and a magnifying glass with a strong light. The pins ended up not perfectly 100% aligned, but close enough to enter the socket, register and work as purchased. I never want to ever have to do that again!
    I can't even imagine trying to remove and replace individual pins up and down the chip! You are a skilled surgeon my friend.
    Never losing your cool when pins go "flying like a ninja". I would have freaked and called it quits right then and there!
    Keep up the good work and excellent video content.

    im not a electronics or tech guy but love your content, find it oddly relaxing watching a skilled person at work . also led me to attempt to fix my phone that died on me . whats the worse could happen , it could be fixed or be in the same state. nothing to lose . was the mute switch was jammed , battery expanded and dead , and forward camera dead . , got the parts on ebay , came with tools , and yeah for most an easy job but was my first . but did it and iphone is " better than factory" lol but encouraged by watching you to give it a go . now learning how to solder . and have a microscope coming. just a cheap one i havent a lot of money so get what i can afford for now . its a microscope with a screen . but wanted to thank you for giving me a new interest and hobby . huge thumbs up !!

    A better 'tool' to straighten the pins would be the shaft of a propelling pencil of a suitable diameter.

    • @abungholeinone
      @abungholeinone ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes, sometimes not. With the knife it can be a bit easier to align a bent pin with the others in its row without overcorrecting in the opposite direction of the initial bend, which you pretty much want to avoid at all costs.

    I use an old Rotring pencil with no leads inside with the tiny tube on its tip as small as those pins, to straighten them out. Usually a 0.7, 0.9,a 1.0, or a 1.2mm tip works.

    • @TheFallenAngel13524
      @TheFallenAngel13524 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bad one's i've seen were from pulling the cooler while it's stuck and dropping it with the cooler when the cpu comes out of the socket with it.

    • @lynxis
      @lynxis ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can say from experience that dropping an AM4 CPU on the hard corner of a desk can cause this sort of damage. I was lucky that I didn't break any pins in the drop or while bending them back and that CPU is still running fine today. I have a friend who said he was not paying close enough attention to how the CPU was seated in the socket before mounting the cooler and only noticed something was wrong when the system didn't boot. All of the pins in the corner that didn't seat properly were flattened and several that he tried to bend back just broke off. Brand new ~$200 CPU got thrown in the trash because there was no way to fix it that wasn't going to cost more than just buying a new one.

    Does straightening pins in this way weaken their connection with the board? Like will that area be more susceptible to damage or bending in future?

    • @jritechnology
      @jritechnology ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The chance of bending the same exact pin again is like....nil. You would have to actually go try to bend that same area again....and no one goes out and bends pins on purpose.
      Bent pins are accidental.
      And no, it does nothing to the connection to the board unless the pad itself is bend in which case you would resolder a new pin.

      How often are you swapping out your CPU?

    • @ShovelShovel
      @ShovelShovel ปีที่แล้ว +7

      the metal is fatigued slightly but there isn't any stress on the pins when in the socket so doesnt matter.

    • @bluej511
      @bluej511 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes straightening will weaken the pin, it is I believe gold. But it shouldn't be an issue. Pinned CPUs have a tendency to stick to the cooler because of thermal paste. If you twist, you'll be fine. A broken pin fixed is better then a bent one fixed. Metal is still metal, fatigue is real :)

    • @chrisliddiard725
      @chrisliddiard725 ปีที่แล้ว

      I very much doubt the 'customer' knows if this CPU works or not. The only check i would expect is to make sure the repaired pins aren't shorting, and even then that check might be limited to a visual inspection.

    • @gordonm2821
      @gordonm2821 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@toddm323 - As Alex points out in his videos he does not waste time doing unnecessary work. You would have to find the right motherboard for the CPU you wanted to test then rig it all up, carry out test, de-rig it all. In that time you could have another shorted motherboard close to being fixed. As I said fault was broken pins and fix is no broken pins.
