"Doss confessed to killing four of her husbands, her mother, her sister, her grandson, and her mother-in-law. The state of Oklahoma centered its case only on Samuel Doss. Nannie Doss was prosecuted by J. Howard Edmondson, who later became governor of Oklahoma. She pleaded guilty on May 17, 1955, and was sentenced to life imprisonment; the state did not pursue the death penalty due to her sex. Doss was never charged with the other deaths. She died from leukemia in the hospital ward of the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in 1965."

She was poor as a kid, living on a farm in Ala-fucking-bama, married at 16, married 5 times then convicted of triple murder to spend the rest of her days in a segregated women’s prison! I’m surprised she was that polite and calm.

Not really. The long uncomfortable staring, the superficial smile, the flat affect, all of it is pretty typical. Some psychopaths are also very still, as they don’t know how to react with emotions they don’t have, so they simply sit still and watch. She was trying to figure out if the interviewer believed her or not, which was why she was staring. Since he was likely unreadable, she just didn’t move, unsure of how to react. That would be my guess.

Psychopaths often stare blankly and directly at people’s faces. Since they can’t feel emotions for other people, they have a hard time discerning them from others. She was studying his face, trying to see if he believed her, but judging from his voice he was likely flat and unemotional. That’s why she just kept staring. She couldn’t figure him out.

Partly the horrific abuse she experienced growing, partly a head injury from childhood that caused her mental and emotional issues for the rest of her life. As for motive, her later killing did have a heavy financial aspect, with her getting multiple insurance payouts, but it seems that several of them, especially her mother, her children/grandchild, and one of her more abusive husbands had a more vengeful factor to it. Its like if someone crossed her or let her down some way, even slightly (like her mother standing aside during her childhood abuse, her older daughter getting pregnant out of wedlock with the baby, or that one husband who simply "wouldn't let her read her romance novels") she would get even with them while pocketing a nice check.
