The song is fundamentally about dissociation, and PTSD or cPTSD from family dysfunction and possibly worse - the skrying is a reference to looking deep within at ones own trauma

Damn I remember having zero muscles graduating from 6th grade then this album came out I grew 20 pounds of pure muscle that summer just with this album
(Per)Version of the Truth, World So Cold, The Patient Mental, Solve et Coagula, The End of All Things to Come....such an underrated album. TEoATtC gets overshadowed by L.D. 50 due to it being a classic album, but I'm in the camp that it's just as good as L.D. 50
Mercy Severity and Shadow of a man off that album kick ass too.

This song and album is fire! "A key to nothing" is an underrated banger, too.
Also skrying is an occult divination or fortune telling technique where you look into a (usually reflective or transparent/translucent) medium like water, glass or crystal to receive a message or vision.
It’s funny looking at the lyrics how many references there are to sing titles from ld 50
So obviously with any good lyricist there’s a surface meaning or basic narrative and then there’s a deeper meaning created by the specific word choices and images, and I’ve always thought Chad’s lyrics were more impressionistic than allegorical. Meaning the second layer isn’t really a hidden story of its own as much as it is a set of powerful images meant to access certain emotions directly, if that makes sense. I probably just stumbled though something everyone knows 😂. Anyway, love the channel bro!
