It looks like it broke at the union where the two pieces connect. This is what happened to me when I snapped a quality Penn two priece rod. After I calmed down and stopped swearing, I took a close look at the break point. What it looked like happened was I didn't fully insert the top section of rod into the sleeve of the bottom section. As in it is supposed to insert about 3 inches into the bottom section and I'd somehow only inserted it about an inch and that is where the break was. I was left with about an inch ring of the bottom sleeve still on the e d of the top shaft of the rod. Easy mistake to make especially since it is manufactured to be a very tight snug fit. Now I'm always making certain that the connection is completely inserted. Just my thoughts on what may have happened based on my experience. Penn makes excellent gear and under most conditions will not fail. Happy fishing and good luck!
Thanks for the comment. I like Penn gear and have never had any problems with it. That is why I was surprised. The only thing is that you mentioned a 2-piece rod, and mine was a one-piece.
