    One of the most enjoyable surf fishing trips I ever had was in the surf just to the east of the calcasieu ship channel. One of those very rare days where green water had come in all the way to the shore and I cast net for finger mullet. Caught a bunch of nice trout and smaller reds. Tore them up until the dolphin came to feed and play. Haven’t finished the video yet but this reminds me so much of that day. Great video.

    The water is really nice. You spread those rods too far apart, fishing by yourself. It's better to keep your rods closer but toss them out in a widespread.
    Send the middle rod out straight in front, the left rod out 30 to 45 degrees and the right rod, same as the left.
    That way if you get two or all rods going down at the same time, you can be close enough tonhandle them and reduce the risk of losing fish.

    • @SouthWestLouisianaSaltwater

      I prefer a longer spread. Even with a properly setup spread, I've had big fish tangle me up.

    • @fishingfreak9734

      @lynkpaul2171 You must have not been surf fishing very much. I fish the Texas surf in practically the same manner. You want a minimum of 30-50 feet spacing to avoid getting tangled with the other lines. A 5 foot shark or a large jack crevalle will run back and forth or pretty much any way they want to go. You also want to spread out to mark your claim so others won't set up right in your lap. I always set my farthest poles first to stake my claim. People will come out of the woodwork if they hear the surf is on fire.

    Great day fishing!
    Suggestion to help
    Don't take it personally
    When you know you are going to release a big fish, don't drag it across the sand when landing it. It removes the protective slime from the scales.

    • @SouthWestLouisianaSaltwater

      I knew you had to be careful with speckled trout because of their slime. I never knew red fish could have similar problems. Thanks for letting me know.

      Haha
      I don't think I would ever release a speckled trout
      They all get cooked

    Have you ever eaten gafftop? I have not but heard/read that they are kind of tasty. Never hardheads though.

    • @carltonbailey489

      Gafftops, even hardheads, are excellent! The key is to bleed the fish by cutting off the tail and putting them back in the net or, on a stringer. They taste even better than freshwater catfish if you bleed them, I kid you not!

    What is the cover thing you’re using on your left index finger?

    • @SouthWestLouisianaSaltwater

      It's a single finger casting glove. It's used to protect your finger from the braid when casting heavy weight.

      The bait was landing in about 4 to 6 feet. I'm not 100% on it being a female. It's just that it's more likely to be a big female. Female Red Fish grow to that size faster than males.
