We used to have a 'black jack' or 'lead sap', as we called it. It was a lump of lead on a spring that was inside a woven leather case. It worked similar to your bludgeon, but smaller and easily concealed. It could knock someone out or crush their skull when swung hard enough!
cool build, come out really well, have to say HE needs a good bludgeoning with that or something heavier with spikes, pervy git that he evidently is might enjoy it though hence the spike suggestion

I've turned broken baseball bats into billy sticks and bludgeons, but not with a spring element. I don't think the flexible element adds to the impact, but certainly helps protect the wrist/arm from stress injury. What finish do you use? I like one that is 1/3 linseed oil, 1/3 turpentine, 1/3 beeswax.

I've seen truncheons, but I've never seen anything with the spring-connected head. I think one would need a little more training to use the spring version effectively. The final product is beautiful.

Back in the day they were robbed to be used as weapons. I don’t know if they still use them on the trains as I left England years ago
If you do an image search for a London Underground 1970’s carriage interior you’ll see them hanging above the seats. They would be robbed off the train then shortened and attached to a wooden handle. You do not want to be on the receiving end of when them when some nutter’s swinging one of them about.

Nicely done, Sir. The only thing I've ever seen that was similar was an old whaling ship lashing pin with a monkeyfist (a hell of a knot) improvised as the business end. No one at the museum had a clue what it was used for. Thanks to your video, I'm pretty sure I now know what it was used for. But, to be honest, that thing I saw looked a good deal less "convincing" than the "argument" you presented. Thanks for another great educational moment!

FYI: A coconut is about the same strength and hardness as a human skull. If your impact weapon will break a coconut.....then it is sufficient for the task at hand.

Finish is 100% pure tung oil, 3 coats.

On the leather wrapped spring - final take looked nice and round - what happened to the stitched edge??
With cloth you generally turn the piece inside out to hide the stitch, probably the same here

Lots of sanding and squashing to get it to move, i actually had to re sew it as well but didn’t record that bit

The pins in the original are oriented but due to the spring and leather being warn it’s not sitting as it should

There’s no need for the extra weight on this design it’s really capable as it is
