    Huge thank you to my Patrons! They help keep the lights on, and they're really cool people. Please consider supporting on Patreon.com/somegadgetguy! This video started as a "react", but the more you look through manufacturer websites, you realize consumers are going to be confused by a lot of these offerings. Part buying guide, here are some thoughts on shopping a new ARM laptop!

    I really hope that Microsoft will be reallly committed to making ARM work after so many attempts. We really need a great competitor to the Apple M chips to have diverse competition

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +11

      They really don't have a choice. Windows on ARM has been getting VERY good updates for the last 2-3 years now, and it seems their hardware partners want machines that can compete better with macbooks.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +10

      That's what I don't think people realize, the last "attempt" was basically Windows 11. It's been getting REALLY good over the last two years. MS hasn't "abandoned" the idea, they've been refining it this whole time.
      It's just a shame that folks who like to watch tech videos only seem to watch the older "fail" videos.

      @@SomeGadgetGuy Oh yeah for sure I don't mean to insinuate that Microsoft has failed, but I guess what I'm really looking forward to is an adoption to ARM with fewer performance drawbacks than before, especially on the emulation side. I'm happy to see more partners going forward with Qualcomm and this is a positive sign that indicates confidence in putting the chips into their upcoming products. I can't wait to see how these perform!

    • @SomeGadgetGuy

      Oh, I said "people" i didnt mean SPECIFCALLY YOU LOL. I just think there's a HUGE gulf of consumer education about what makes these machines different.
      That was a big part of the announcement today too. More improvements to emulation performance. I'm really curious to see if that will improve performance on older ARM laptops and tablets 🤞

    Note: ONLY the surface pro has easily removable storage with a dedicated compartment. You can remove the SSD in the laptop but it voids warranty bc you must remove the entire bottom plate and replace it like other laptops

      I couldn’t believe this, but you are right, footnote 27 reads: “This device does not contain user serviceable parts. Hard drive is only removable by an authorized technician following Microsoft provided instructions.“
      This makes the 256 GB variant look completely ridiculous.

    • @cluberti

      @@Workaholic42 It does not void the warranty, it just means if you want the drive serviced you need to reproduce the issue with the original drive, if you send it back for any repairs keep the replaced drive because it won't be swapped, etc. It does not void the warranty to swap the drive, but if you damage the device while swapping the drive, that would indeed be outside the warranty. Microsoft has warranty terms available on their site, so anyone can download a PDF and read it.

    • @yensteel
      @yensteel 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      So, could you go to a Microsoft repair center, give them a brand new nvme ssd, and ask them to install for you?

      No Yensteel. More like, You can replace the drive, but then if you need the laptop serviced under warranty, you should put the original drive back.

    I am hoping that with the recent release of LPCAMM2, we can finally start seeing removable RAM options on the next generation of these ARM laptops. It already addresses all of the problems with the SODIMM form-factor so there's literally no excuse now for manufacturers to continue with soldered RAM.

      It all comes down to money. AS SOON as we see a laptop with that option, it has to sell well for others to consider making that an option. It's WAY TOO profitable for a manufacturer to solder all this down, and force you to buy a whole new machine if you want one component upgrade.

    Awesome overview Juan, just what was needed!
    This really sheds some light on my purchasing options, I love the starting prices, love the 16 gb ram default a bit less in all honesty but ok.
    I'm currently using a surface pro 8 as my travel remote work device when I am visiting my family for extended periods of time. One of the issues I've been having with it is overheating and stuttering when running 2x 1440p screens with a real time video feed over Teamviewer. It doesn't happen all the time but when it does it's detrimental to my workflow.
    So I've been on the lookout for replacement and decided to wait for the ARM chip lineup.
    My only question right now is how capable the adreno GPU is and whether it will be able to tackle the above task without overheating/throttling as compared to my current option (and can it even run 2x 1440 p screens like the "regular" chips?), or would I still have to go and get something more traditional.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy

      Last summer I did the Android faithful podcast and my office gets up to 90°F. I couldn't run my workstation, so I used the Robo&Kala fanless tablet, had that connected to a monitor and my camera. For roughly two hours video call.
      The camera overheated, but the tablet didn't.
      X Elite is more powerful and more power thirsty, so it probably will need to spin up fans, but I think it should be more robust than the X86 surface. Hopefully.

    The fact that all the major laptop OEMs (and a few second-tier ones) have gotten on-board with Snapdragon X and that major apps like the Adobe suite, Chrome, Spotify, etc. are now available natively on ARM are all very good signs that bode well for the Windows on ARM platform's future.
    Even though I wish they would have discussed the Prism emulator layer in greater detail, I think now that adequate native support + great emulation can make these laptops reach that magical "good enough" figure that makes them a viable option for most consumers who do their stuff in the browser.
    There will still be edge cases where an x64 machine is needed (like when you need special drivers that are not available on ARM), but other than that, we can all look forward to not only quieter, thinner and more powerful laptops but also seeing the x64 boys work harder to catch up.

      When power concerns are less precious, and you're working at a desk, obviously the performance of an HEDT workstation, or gaming rig with a beefy GPU makes more sense.

      I don't believe there are any "E" cores on X Elite. As far as I can tell, the tiers of chip are rated for the expected chassis and power envelope. The 84 going into the highest power draw system (80W config from Qualcomm's demo machines) and with active cooling, it can hit a higher clock speed.

      It depends on what you call AI. The server side stuff, or the local stuff.
      Things like subject detection in photos is really mature now. We had OLD Huawei phones with Kirin chips that could "recognize" subjects like pets and landscapes. Now we see that has evolved to editing photos, blurring backgrounds, and removing objects from pictures. That stuff, done locally, I think is kinda fun and helpful.
      This other stuff though, like logging everything you do so you can "rewind" at the OS level is a little concerning.
      I think we're cresting the peak of interest in AI. The next phase of making LLMs better is going to be horrifically expensive and terrible for the environment, and we still don't see a clear path for turning profits out of these expenses. Most games of the last 20 years run on "a GPU". Could be Radeon. Could be RTX. Could be Iris or ARC. Could be Adreno or Mali.
      Gamers are kinda the worst at this, because they don't really keep up with things that are different than what they're familiar with and already like.
      The LAST gen Snapdragon PC chip (8CXg3) was roughly as powerful as an 11th gen core i3 when emulating X86 software, but even it could drive Control at 20fps under the lowest settings. X Elite is SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful than that.
      It's OK to still prefer building HEDT and gaming rigs for your play sessions, but also appreciate these chips will outperform the AMD APU portable consoles at similar power draw.

    I wish there was a Surface Pro Elite Plus OLED Fanless option. Guess imma wait until next year and stick with my Surface Pro X (SQ1). Maybe buy an SQ3 5G when it’s on sale.

      I really hoped they would refresh the Pro X. With the focus on windows on arm now we will profit from this hype anyway. Surface Pro 11 is 2mm thicker and more than 100gr heavier then the 5 year old Pro X. That's insane. 🤬

      Why do people say "stay committed" when they've been actively supporting and improving ARM support since the Surface X.

    The fact that the AI built in is taking screenshots of your desktop every time you click on something is a big no from me, Windows pushing me to learn Linux or switch to Mac. Huge invasion of privacy, and no I don’t trust them when they say “it’s local on the computer” it’s not like Microsoft hasn’t lied in the past.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's the only way forward though. We want this stuff done locally, and when they make that promise, that means we have better ammunition to take a case to a regulator. When a company transgresses, we need to activate consumers and get them communicating to the DoJ, FTC, FCC, and State Attorneys General. Nothing happens if we just complain on social media.
      When we improve local processing, like making predictive text and transcription happen on device, it does make our info more secure. We just have to fight all the extra monetization BS, and "sending analytics" nonsense back up to company servers.

      I wrote directly to Qualcomm after that San Diego trip, and said I was worried about the consumer education part. Folks got a LITTLE familiar with Intel and AMD calling things "3 series" 5, 7, 9. The bigger number is better.
      They're not going to know what the heck to make out of "X1E-80-100 ", and that's only if the manufacturers even give us that information.
      Qualcomm PR never replied.

      Here's the deal. If we want good hardware with good power/performance metrics, we're unfortunately tied to this dumb new wave of AI. But seeing as how Qualcomm is upstreaming drivers and linux support (and just released an experimental build of Debian) we kinda HAVE to hope these systems sell decently well enough for those of us that want alternatives to get them.
      I wont do it right at launch, but a Linux install is HIGH on my list of priorities to test.

      @@SomeGadgetGuy I still wouldn’t tough it with a barge poll. I think you’ll see more and more manufacturers move to ARM it just makes sense, as they use way less power. I’m sure Microsoft have just painted a huge bulls eye on themselves, law firms and hackers will wait a year then pounce. Having AI locally is fine, taking screen shots crossed the line.

      @@SomeGadgetGuy I will be here to watch your Linux installation!
      I'm one of many people who are already experiencing Linux on ARM...by means of running it on my M1 Mac Mini via Asahi Linux.
      I'm hoping Microsoft doesn't goof it all up by locking down Windows such that we not allowed to run it on these wonderful Snapdragon X Elites.
      Yes...I handled installing Linux on my M1 well enough thanks to Hector Martin and his team , but I'm hoping it won't prove too difficult...or impossible...to it on these new Qualcomm chips.

    The base for laptops now is 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. So, they shouldn't be marking price for X Elite ones with all they claimed to be more than $1,000.
    Simple as that.
    It is way overpriced now. Better stick with x86 for a year or two until they know their dumbs*it mind to even price so high to these laptops just barking battery backup and AI alone. They want Macbook level price while their hardware build quality is like $400 laptop.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy

      I mean that's not true, and the performance per watt is something Intel can't touch right now, but I'm sure it feels good to have the "hot take" against whatever is new these days.
