The vibe of Sentosa Island in the 1990s compared to the present day is completely different now. I feel a little bit of nostalgia looking at the video again. I remember taking the ferry from Harbourfront to the ferry terminal @ Sentosa. This would be one of my first go-to-ride when I go there with my family. The monorail was slow and can turn into an "oven" on a hot and sunny day. I remember the monorail will pass by these "dinosaur" sculptures at some point during the ride. And lastly, we will visit the musical fountain for the Magical Sentosa show!
I wonder if the changes make life better? I suspect that many Singaporeans would wish that the old monorail still existed, even if it was slow and hot in the summer.
The connection between Sentosa and the main island improved. Though the current Sentosa Express still can't handle the increased visitors to the island resort presently. I was born a couple of years after this video was shot. But it was definitely a fave childhood memory to any kid born in the 90's . Sentosa had transformed from a tranquil park in the past, to the present day's mega theme park resort. The thing I miss most that the current monorail doesn't offer is being about to ride the train around the entire island. it is now more of a shuttle service mainly as a connection in and out of Sentosa.
Look at all the forest and how much they cleared it to make way for USS, I had a staycation 3 nights in the early 00s at a chalet (I don't remember where but pretty sure it had already been tear down) and every morning peacocks will be roaming around outside of the chalet, I will just take the monorail round and round
It was a cheap escape from the mainland back then. Unlike the current one, the monorail circles round most popular parts of the island. I can basically go round the island many times in this without walking. This clip is so nostalgic. When on dates with my girlfriend (now wife). Still visit Sentosa multiple times, at least once a year until now. The feeling and atmosphere has changed since I visited it way back in the late 70s. Gone are the tranquil atmosphere where the Sentosa named is derived from Malay language.
......WHUY?!? I really missed the old one, it was longer, windows can be opened and its cute. The new one is so cramped and short. I miss the old sentosa. :')
@BFDI Pencil & Swee Heng Official/FBDI I won't say Wikipedia, but rather the Journal of Performance for where the information came from. WP just makes finding infos easier.
I remember taking the sentosa express in 2004 when I was only 5, it was a rather longer ride which makes it pleasing for me as I get to circle around the island :)
Brings back memories! I remember always being very scared haha when the monorail went to the Siloso Beach area. At that time it hadn't been developed and there were always rumours that it was haunted. Really brings u back to the old and simpler Sentosa, where u really felt like u were away on a holiday from Singapore. The sentosa now has its attractions but it's basically a mini Singapore now lol
@T4799 Yes its still a theme park island, and to get there you can have a choice of the cable car, the new monorail, walking, the bus, a taxi or a car. But not the ferry! There is now a causeway linking Sentosa with mainland Singapore. Please remember that this film was taken in 1991 and things have changed since then. Simon
In 2009 or 2010, my family and i went to Sentosa and i remember there was an abandoned monorail track near the Beach Station. I don't think it's there anymore because the place have change a lot. I can't stop thinking what it was like at the time. I didn't know it was this long!
If only this monorail is still around .. Would be better and easier to travel those place instead of taking the blue line, red line .. So leceh liao. I miss monorail.
That monorial had been in operation for more than 20 years--ceased operations in March 2005 due to making way for the Sentosa Express LRT bewteen Harbourfront (vivocity) and Palawan Beach ((:
February 26, 2017 i felt so fucked up more than ever. i was there yesterday in Fort Siloso brought 3 friends with me looking for this monorail. fucked, this video was taken way back in 1991. fucked me.
@the_fbobis osu! oh ok interesting thanks for letting me know because I'm interested to find something which from the past 20th century when ppl use to take the old monorail train
@the_fbobis osu! Hi today I just when to sentosa and I get down beach station and when I went there the train it'sn there but you told me it was near beach station
@s705945d On my way home from Sydney to London I changed aircraft at Changi and did get some video of the airport people mover, but, at night, when it was dark. As yet this footage has not been digitised, as the people mover is not easy to see. Simon
So the monorail closed in 2005, I visited in 2004. Is sentosa Island still a theme park? It seemed fairly popular in 2004. The ways to the island were either by ferry, cable car or I think you could drive there too. In the video they said the only way was by ferry.
@citytransportinfo It wouldn't really be called a theme park though there are attractions like a luge, cable cars and golf courses. There is, however, a theme park nearby called Universal Studios Singapore, which, together with some hotels and a casino (and Sentosa itself), is part of an integrated resort called Resorts World Sentosa (RWS)
the old monorial are not air conditioned and i think most ppl don't like it especially since singapore is like the hot humid country and thus come the new aircondition monorial
I miss the old monorail and old Sentosa because it has a free musical fountain, making way for USS and RWS since 2007.
thank you for this clip, I had fond memories growing up riding in the old monorail. It's much more fun with open windows rather than the ones today.

@@CitytransportInfoplus it did but the problem is that the old one offered a full loop around Sentosa. The new old does not
When sentosa was empty, yet the old monorail is better than the new-designed ones.
SG5791E STUDIOS true I agree
As a 17 year old teen,I agree.

We miss the old Sentosa Monorail.. Now it is dismantled to make way for the new LRT route in Sentosa and Universal Studios.
It’s good they changed it. The previous monorail sucks and is too noisy. And no air-conditioning.

Problem was that the monorail wasn’t fun if it was raining or on a hot day. Plus if you miss a stop you will have to travel a full 30 mins.

Lol it sucks when windows can be opened. No air conditioning
now those younger generations have no chance to travel on the monorail, l love the monorail
I miss this. When Sentosa actually was what the name meant, 'peace and tranquility'.
Today, its a stressful, overcrowded shit hole.
Yeah exactly! Sentosa really became too commercialized during the late 2000s, when too many things started closing down.
I remember taking the sentosa express in 2004 when I was only 5, it was a rather longer ride which makes it pleasing for me as I get to circle around the island :)
And I'm one of the operators of this monorail. It was fun.
it is sad that the old monorail was closed. It was useful in getting around.
@@CitytransportInfoplus it is.and u dont need a license to operate it during that time. Just a week of trial and u off to go on Yr own.
@@shamizan Don't mind me if I ask...
...Was it easy to operate that Monorail train?
Did u see anything weird at night going through the forest?

Everywhere in sentosa is haunted. But well that's part of the fun
Underwater World was newly opened back then in mid 1991, and now it had been torn down. Those were the days...

It’s still there up till today 2022
As a train enthusiast who was born after 2000(not giving my actual birth year), this is a gem!
R.I.P Sentosa monorail and your long but skinny train

I rode it in early 2003 when I had a stopover in Singapore.

My 4-year old memories are beginning to return to me.
The announcement for the airport skytrain are still like this
if im not wrong rasa sentosa food centre is also gone...
I rode it once in 2002 Jan. So memorable.

Didnt know this was the original sequence, I thought the next stop after ferry terminal was underwater world, which was the 2nd last
please remember that the film comprises edited highlights from my journey - not every station or section of line was filmed
excellent
I miss old sentosa, many place to walk, walking at the park facing wtc towards underwater world, new sentosa is boring. New panorail less station 😢
