Fireplace Pilot Light Not Working -Replacing Thermocouple on a remote gas fireplace- VERY EASY

  • If your gas fireplace pilot light won't stay lit then you should replace your thermocouple. I've called service people to repair and replace mine in the past but it seems like this is now a semi-annual requirement. The typical recommendation and approach is to clean the thermocouple using sandpaper and compressed air. While that may work, it's probably just a temporary fix. Instead, you can buy the universal parts on line for under $30 and replacing the thermocouple takes only about 5 minutes. This could save you ~$200 over a service call. Replacing the thermocouple should be a more permanent solution than cleaning the old one.
    The hardest and dirtiest part of the job is getting all the logs out of the way so you can get back in there to do the work. If you're like me and decide that it makes sense to clean out the whole fireplace while you're already there; then cleaning the logs, upgrading the rock and tinder will take about 1 hour.
    NEVER USE A SERVICE TECHNICIAN TO DO THIS JOB AGAIN!
    Here’s a link to the coupler I bought for$14 on Amazon:
    Water Heater Pilot Assembely Includes Pilot Thermocouple and Tubing LP Propane a.co/d/bkcJ5tB. If you have natural gas, you made need a different model.

    Paid $250 to have this done by a service person. Wish I had researched and found your video first! I'm sure my husband could have done it. We'll know for next time! Thank you!

    Thanks Fran, awesome that you got it working. Shame that a service guy would not know this nor guarantee their work to come back and fix thoroughly. Service is not what it used to be that's for sure! Stay cozy my friends!

      Couldn’t agree more about the service situation. I’ve noticed two things. Companies no longer have a pride of workmanship philosophy. Instead they view service as a cost center and they want to turn it into a profit center instead. The other thing is consumer apathy is higher than ever before. People value convenience over everything else and don’t negotiate nor hold them accountable

    Thank you for posting. Currently (today) experiencing a lit pilot but the fireplace won’t stay lit. So I sand paper, vacuumed, and used a can of air to blow out etc… It is working so far but I am watching and planning to order a thermocouple because these things only last for 10 years. This one I believe it 17 years old😳. so I am watching it. Thanks for sharing how to remove the thermocouple. Very easy ! Thanks

      Wow, you can 17 years from one! That proves my problem . The service guys were changing min every year since it was built in 2017. Its now been 3 years since my DIY project and its been fine! I'd love to get 10 years out of mine

    Great video, exactly our issue. I was able to go to the local hardware store and pick up a new thermocouple for $15. I did not need the whole pilot light assembly (pilot light and thermocouple), I only needed the thermocouple. Thanks again!

      Good suggestion. I’ll try that next time. Mine is still working well! I bought new logs and the installer showed me a neat trick. The pilot gas flow sounded kind of loud. He stuck a small piece of the embers in the pilot area where the gas comes out. It worked great

    You replaced the whole pilot assembly which includes the pilot burner,thermocouple and bracket.There are universal thermocouples but I would be careful replacing the whole pilot assembly with one that is universal.The reason is that the orientation of the pilot flame is important to prevent delayed ignition of the main burner flame.You have a remote to turn on the fireplace that allows you to be a safe distance away but for someone using the knob on the control valve to turn to (on),delayed ignition could be a problem.You should be able to get an original replacement pilot assembly using the model and serial numbers on the burner assembly.Also tucking the pilot line and thermocouple (copper portion)low and away from the burner flame will prevent damage and premature failure.

      @@franlinnane Our pilot assembly has the push button electric spark - so It's an 80 dollar unit and requires the wiring connections - the technician ordered it. Our pilot light is off so the direct vent is leaking in cold air. I've got blankets and a sleeping bag and old snowmobile suit around the vent openings. haha. thanks for your vid - congrats on fixing it yourself! awesome.

    • @franlinnane
      @franlinnane  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So. You might want to clean them outside with a hose, a bucket of water and DAWN of course😀.
      Soot is a grease and Dawn is the best degreaser.
      I used a scrub brush and gently cleaned them.
      My set had @30 pieces. Take pictures first so you will remember how to put them back together.

    My pilot light stays on until I turn the knob to ON. Then the pilot light goes out every time. When the inspector inspected the house he tried the fireplace and it worked. Of course now, after I bought the house, it doesn't. lol Not sure if I should try compressed air and some steel wool first or just change out the thermal couple up front.

    • @franlinnane
      @franlinnane  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the delay. So I had the same problem. When i moved from pilot to ON, it turned itself off. I don't think that air would help nor wool. Fact that it does ignite is proof that the gas is not obstructing the flame from starting. Black carbon build up on the thermocouple could be a problem and sanding it down a bit could help; but that never worked for me. That's when I ended up replacing the part.

    Did you test for leaks? You’re putting lives in danger with this shoddy workmanship. Also, you had a lazy technician.

    • @franlinnane
      @franlinnane  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for pointing that out. Yes, you’re right that is important. People should test the fittings to ensure there are no gas leaks. As you know, this is a DIY community and if you have any advice on how to do that I’m sure it would be appreciated! The most common ways to test for leaks is to spray soapy ( Dawn) water on the fitting and look for bubbles. Tighten as needed or perhaps use a little bit of the white plumbers tape.

    • @adame8173
      @adame8173 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@franlinnane You’re welcome but your reply is more misinformation. Dawn or dish soap will cause rust on the gas valve and what ever else you spray it on. It isn’t designed to test for leaks; you want to use a product that’s made for it. Also, white tape is for water and pink is for gas; delete this video or remake. You are putting lives in danger!!
